Bethesda identifies Arena as the first chapter of the saga and dates it to 1994; its official materials also identify Daggerfall as a 1996 release. Bethesda’s series page and Anthology description establish the numbered sequence from Arena through Skyrim. The year-level dates for the later three entries are original launch years, not a platform-by-platform launch chronology.
Do you need to play them in this order?
No. The list answers which game came out first; it is not a required story sequence. The available official series and collection pages establish the games and their order, but do not say that a player must finish earlier entries to understand later ones. You can start with the entry that interests you and use release order if you want to experience the numbered series from its beginning.
Where do Online, spin-offs, and Oblivion Remastered fit?
The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls Online is a separate online series entry, not one of the five numbered single-player games. A genuinely franchise-wide timeline would need to define whether it includes online games, mobile releases, expansions, and re-releases; this five-game list does not claim to catalogue all of them.

Mobile and other spin-offs
Legends, Blades, and Castles are spin-offs rather than numbered entries. Bethesda’s news listings identify Online, Castles, and Oblivion Remastered among its series products. Their omission here keeps the answer focused on the five numbered games rather than implying a complete franchise release timeline.
Oblivion Remastered
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is a remastered edition of Oblivion, not a sixth numbered game. Play it in the fourth game’s position if you prefer that edition; the original release order remains unchanged.

Can you still get the older games?
Bethesda Support’s Arena and Daggerfall download information describes digital downloads for both games and notes their inclusion on physical discs in The Elder Scrolls Anthology. Bethesda’s Anthology page describes a collectible PC box set containing the five numbered PC games and official add-ons, ending with Skyrim Legendary Edition. Bethesda Support also says the Anthology key redeems Morrowind: Game of the Year, Oblivion: Game of the Year, and Skyrim Legendary Edition on Steam. These pages document the collection and access information, not current stock or a guarantee that a particular key will work. Check availability, compatibility, and seller terms before buying a legacy copy.
