David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH), the creator of Ruby on Rails, drew criticism online after his reported Rails World 2026 remarks promoted agent-assisted coding and described a planned rebuild of HEY with native clients and a Rust backend. The backlash reflects concerns about what that shift signals for Rails and whether language comparisons behind the claims were fair—not proof that Rails is dead or that Rust has been shown to outperform it.

What DHH reportedly said at Rails World 2026

Commentary about the September 23, 2026 keynote says DHH argued that software development is moving away from manually written implementation code and described plans for HEY to use native client applications with a Rust backend. A September 24 LaunchKit article attributes this wording to DHH’s post about the talk: “It’s pencils down, people. Writing code by hand is no longer an economically viable skill for most programmers at most companies. But the future of making software has never been brighter. Don’t you dare black pill this beautiful moment!” LaunchKit’s account says the quotation was read from that post, not verified against the keynote recording; it should not be treated as a transcript-checked keynote quote.

Demóstenes García’s September 28 commentary also describes the HEY rebuild plan and says DHH did not announce that Rails was dead. García characterized the moment as DHH telling a Rails audience that he no longer needed Rails for one flagship product. That is García’s interpretation, not DHH’s wording. Read García’s account.

Why some Rails and Elixir readers objected

The HEY plan landed as a signal about Rails

For some readers, the striking part was not simply that Rust was mentioned. The reported plan to rebuild a major 37signals product with native clients and a Rust backend came at a Rails conference, prompting concern about what it implied for a framework closely associated with DHH. The criticism is about the implications of that choice; the sources do not establish that Rails is being discontinued.

Commenters questioned whether language comparisons were fair

An October 5 r/rails discussion titled “DHH keeps promoting Rust” includes commenters’ objections to the Elixir implementation’s database-access design and claims about differences in message delivery. An October 6 r/elixir thread alleges that the Rust version had more contributors, commits, and optimization time, while Elixir and Go versions were closer to one-shot efforts. Those are claims made in community discussions, not independently verified project-history findings or benchmark results.

The threads document particular criticism, not a representative measure of what Rails or Elixir developers think. “Roasted” is therefore a headline shorthand for visible online pushback, not evidence of a community-wide consensus.

Do the available claims prove Rust is faster?

No. The reviewed coverage does not provide a methodologically documented, independently verified head-to-head benchmark establishing that Rust outperformed Rails, Elixir, or Go under equivalent conditions. The reported comparisons raise relevant questions—such as contributor effort, optimization time, functional parity, database and concurrency design, test coverage, workload, and hardware—but do not supply enough verified data to score the implementations on those factors.

LaunchKit also notes that a reported HEY capacity claim for Raspberry Pi systems combined a Rust backend rewrite with a move to native clients. Because more than one architectural change was involved, the account alone cannot isolate the effect of Rust. It says the performance figures cited were not accompanied by benchmark methodology or hardware details. LaunchKit’s explanation is commentary on the available claims, not a substitute for a published benchmark.

What the controversy does—and does not—show

  • It shows that some commenters objected to DHH’s reported Rust advocacy and questioned how language implementations were compared.
  • It does not establish that Rails has been abandoned, that Rust is universally faster, or that the reported implementation-effort figures are accurate.
  • It leaves open the practical question behind the debate: whether the proposed product architecture and development process suit HEY’s needs. The available accounts do not provide enough independently verified technical detail to settle that question.
