To find Fortnite chests without an external map, turn on Visualize Sound Effects in Settings > Audio. Its on-screen radial indicators can point you toward some sounds, including nearby loot cues. Then move toward the indicator or listen for a chest, and search the nearby structure rather than checking an entire landmark at random. The feature does not guarantee that every chest will be marked or that a chest will spawn at a familiar spot.
Turn on Fortnite’s visual sound indicators
Epic’s documented route is to enable Visualize Sound Effects before entering a match. Epic describes the feature as turning on a visual radial indicator for some sounds—not every sound in every situation.
- In the lobby, open the display-name menu and select Settings.
- Open the Audio tab.
- Turn on Visualize Sound Effects, then select Apply.
Epic’s instructions are in its Visualize Sound Effects support article. Once in a match, watch the radial indicator and move toward the direction it suggests; use it to narrow your search, not as a precise marker for an exact chest location.
Use sound and visual clues to narrow the search
If you hear a chest nearby, or the visual cue points toward one, check the surrounding structure methodically. Look inside nearby buildings and covered areas, including other floors, basements, rooftops, spaces behind walls, and spots beneath ramps. These are practical places to check, not guaranteed spawn positions.

Listening can complement the visual indicator, especially when searching for a specific chest type. For example, guides for Sprite Chests in Chapter 7 Season 3 describe a nearby audio cue, a blue glow, and a pink crystal on the lid. Those clues apply to that chest type and season; they should not be treated as a universal description of Fortnite chests.
Don’t mistake a possible spawn point for a guaranteed chest
For the Chapter 7 Season 3 Sprite Chests, guides report that chests can appear at random among potential spawn points. A familiar spot may therefore be empty in a particular match. Check nearby spaces when a cue directs you there, but if the chest is not present, move on rather than assuming it must be hidden at that landmark. Exact spawn locations and routes can change by season, and the available sources do not establish a lasting route for ordinary chests.

What to do if the visual cues are missing
Epic has reported an issue on Nintendo Switch 2 that can prevent visual radial indicators and clues such as chests from appearing even when the setting is enabled. Epic’s support page about missing Visualize Sound Effects cues on Nintendo Switch 2 says the issue is being addressed, but gives no fix date. If you are affected, listen for nearby cues and search likely spaces; do not assume that changing headsets will resolve the reported issue.
