Replace an unsupported Mac when it can no longer meet your security, app-compatibility, or reliability needs without more patch maintenance than you are willing to handle. An unofficial patch may extend a compatible model’s usefulness, but it does not make that Mac an Apple-supported configuration. First check the exact model, installed macOS version, available Apple updates, hardware condition, and the apps and accessories you rely on.
First, check whether your Mac is actually missing updates
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update (on older macOS versions, use Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update). “Up to date” means Software Update has no compatible update to offer that Mac; it does not, by itself, show that the installed macOS still receives current security fixes. Apple recommends using the latest macOS compatible with the Mac, saying this helps maintain “security, stability, and compatibility.” Apple’s macOS update guidance explains how to check and install available updates.
Confirm your exact model and macOS version before deciding based on age. Choose Apple menu > About This Mac to see the model and version; on some older Macs, the model identifier is available in System Information. If Software Update offers a compatible macOS update, back up first and install it. Apple says compatible updates are intended to support security, stability, and compatibility.
Use these factors to decide whether to patch, repair, or replace

There is no evidence-based universal dollar threshold or model-year cutoff. The right choice depends on your actual workload, repair options, and tolerance for upkeep.

When an unofficial patch is worth considering
OpenCore Legacy Patcher is a community project for running macOS on many Macs that Apple no longer supports for that version. Its developers direct users to check the supported-model list before proceeding. Do not assume that support for one older Mac means another model is suitable.
Consider patching if the exact model is listed, the Mac remains useful and healthy, and you are comfortable maintaining a community-supported configuration. A secondary or noncritical machine is generally a more forgiving place to accept troubleshooting than a Mac you rely on for sensitive or time-critical work. That is a practical judgment, not a quantified safety rating: the available sources do not establish a universal safe-use rule or measure the security risk of patched Macs.

Maintenance can be part of the commitment. The OpenCore Legacy Patcher documentation describes lowered System Integrity Protection (SIP) requirements for unsupported systems and says macOS updates remove root patches, which then need to be reapplied. Requirements and steps can vary by model and configuration; consult the project’s documentation for your setup rather than assuming every installation behaves identically.
When hardware service pushes the decision toward replacement
Apple’s vintage and obsolete labels concern service availability, not a universal security cutoff. As of the Apple Support page dated September 15, 2026, Apple defines a product as vintage when it has been more than five but less than seven years since Apple stopped distributing it, and obsolete when more than seven years have passed. Apple says hardware service for obsolete products is discontinued. Mac laptops may qualify for battery-only repair for up to ten years after last distribution, subject to parts availability. Check Apple’s service-status definitions and local service options for your exact Mac.

A vintage or obsolete label alone does not tell you whether macOS still receives security fixes. Treat software support and hardware-service status as separate questions. Replacement becomes more attractive when a serious hardware fault combines with limited repair availability, or when the Mac cannot run the apps and accessories you need.

Make a current backup before changing macOS or attempting an unofficial patch. Apple describes using Time Machine with external storage in its Mac backup instructions. A backup protects your files; it does not make an unsupported operating system supported.

If you replace the Mac, Apple’s Mac setup and support guidance explains how Migration Assistant can copy documents, apps, user accounts, and settings to a new Mac. Check that your essential apps and any specialized peripherals will work on the destination system before you depend on the transfer.
