A fan-only accessory moves ambient air and may help dissipate heat, but the available evidence does not establish how much it changes temperature or FPS compared with a retail TEC cooler. Neither option guarantees higher frame rates: the outcome depends on the phone, game, settings, fit and cooling conditions.
How the three cooling approaches differ

Thermoelectric cooling actively transfers heat using the Peltier effect, unlike a fan that only moves air. Hybrid products combine both: for example, Cooler Master’s Cryo Phone Cooler pairs a thermoelectric plate with fan ventilation.
Does a phone cooler actually help with gaming?
It can help address heat, but that is not the same as guaranteeing better performance. Under sustained heat, a phone processor may reduce its speed at thermal thresholds, which can contribute to lag in interactive workloads. That relationship is described in a 2017 mobile-device study, but the paper’s experiments are not a result for every modern phone or every clip-on accessory (Lee, Kim and Shin, “Efficient Thermoelectric Cooling for Mobile Devices,” IEEE ISLPED, 2017).
The most directly relevant gaming experiment in the cited sources, published in JASIEK in June 2026, tested a Peltier cooler with two mid-range phones playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The authors tested Standard and HD graphics settings in 10-, 15- and 20-minute sessions, repeating each condition 30 times. They reported lower average temperatures in all tested phone-and-setting combinations, but the FPS changes differed considerably between phones and settings.

These are the paper’s reported results for its tested phones, game and conditions—not predictions for other models or games. The temperature findings support the case for a TEC cooler when surface heat is the problem; the variable FPS results are why a cooler should not be bought on the promise of a universal frame-rate boost. A separate 2017 study of an adaptive thermoelectric design on a smartphone with representative mobile benchmarks reported performance loss of 1.8% with TEC versus 19.2% without it, at a cooling-power cost of 0.2 W. That is evidence about the authors’ design and benchmark conditions, not a retail cooler comparison or a universal gaming result (IEEE ISLPED paper).

Is a phone fan or Peltier cooler better?
If the goal is actively lowering the phone’s contact-surface temperature during a demanding session, choose a TEC/Peltier cooler over a fan-only accessory. A TEC moves heat through its plate, while a fan-only unit relies on airflow. However, the cited sources do not include a controlled, retail fan-only-versus-TEC gaming test under identical conditions, so there is no supported figure for how much better one is in temperature or FPS.
A fan-only accessory may suit someone who wants airflow without the extra cooling plate and its power requirements. A TEC cooler is the more evidence-backed option for active surface cooling, but its usefulness still depends on making good contact with the phone and on how the phone handles heat internally.

What real products show about fit and power
ASUS AeroActive Cooler 6: a ROG Phone 6-series accessory
ASUS describes the AeroActive Cooler 6 as an external accessory for the ROG Phone 6 series, not a universal phone cooler. Its modes include fan-only, phone-powered TEC and externally powered TEC. ASUS reports up to 25°C lower surface temperature near the CPU in a lab comparison of a ROG Phone 6 with and without the accessory; that is a manufacturer-reported, model-specific maximum, not an independent result for other phones.
ASUS also warns that excessive cooling could cause condensation and says the accessory includes humidity-sensor protection. Check the model’s instructions and operating conditions rather than assuming every cooler has the same safeguards.

Cooler Master Cryo: an external-power example
The Cryo Phone Cooler is a category example with a thermoelectric plate, fan ventilation, app controls and adjustable clips. Cooler Master specifies a 9V DC power supply. Confirm the required supply and the phone’s fit before buying; product availability may vary.
OPPO K13 Turbo Series: cooling integrated into a phone
For an integrated approach, OPPO describes the K13 Turbo Series, in the India-market announcement, as combining an active fan with vapor-chamber and graphite heat-spreading layers. OPPO reports a 2–4°C temperature drop under bright, high-load outdoor conditions and says temperatures stayed below 43°C for 84% of users in its described use. These are manufacturer claims tied to that product and stated context, not an independent comparison with clip-on coolers. See OPPO India’s announcement.

What to check before buying an external cooler
- Exact phone compatibility: Check the supported model, not just the phone’s approximate size. Some accessories are phone-specific.
- Attachment and contact: Confirm that clips or the mounting system fit your phone and that the cooling surface can make suitable contact.
- Case clearance: Check whether you must remove your case and whether that is practical during gaming.
- Power: Find out whether the cooler draws power from the phone or needs an external supply, and confirm the specified supply requirements.
- Comfort and setup: Consider whether the attachment interferes with your grip, a stand or a controller.
- Operating cautions: Read the manufacturer’s guidance on humidity, condensation and any temperature protections.
Which should you choose?
- Choose a TEC/Peltier accessory if sustained heat is a real problem and active surface cooling is your priority; accept the added power, fit and portability considerations.
- Choose a fan-only accessory if you specifically want airflow and do not need an actively cooled contact plate. Do not assume it will produce a measurable FPS gain.
- Consider a phone with a built-in fan when selecting a new phone and you value an integrated setup. Judge the phone by its overall sustained gaming behavior, not the fan alone.
- Skip an accessory for now if your phone is not overheating or losing performance in the sessions you actually play; the cited evidence does not establish that every gamer needs extra cooling.
