Start with your battery usage screen, then lower screen load, rein in only the apps that show heavy background use, and switch off connections you aren’t using. Heat and battery drain usually share causes, so the same changes help both. Menu names vary by phone and software version, so the steps below are labeled by device.
Step 1: Find what is actually using the battery
Changing settings at random can disable useful features without fixing anything. Check usage first.
- iPhone: open Settings > Battery. Apple’s Battery view shows daily usage plus app and system activity. It can point to background activity, notifications, or poor mobile coverage as contributors.
- Google Pixel: open Battery > Battery usage to see consumption by app. On Pixel 6 and later, Battery diagnostics includes a “Battery draining too quickly” flow. Steps vary with your Android version.
- Samsung Galaxy: Samsung’s US guidance points to Device care for reviewing background activity. Labels can differ by model and One UI version.
Step 2: Reduce screen load
Both Apple and Google list the display among the first things to adjust.
- Lower brightness. Apple and Google both recommend it. On Pixel, Adaptive brightness is also recommended.
- Shorten screen-off time. On iPhone, turn on Auto-Lock. On Pixel, shorten the screen timeout.
- Pixel only, where supported: Google lists turning off Always-on Display and Smooth Display. Both depend on the model.
Step 3: Handle problem apps, not every app
If one app shows high background use, reduce its background access or how much you use it. Notifications and background activity both appear in Apple’s battery details as possible causes.

On Pixel, leave app battery usage set to Optimized. Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on. Restrict or stop only the apps your diagnostics flag, because essential services such as messaging or alarms can be affected by blanket restrictions.
Step 4: Switch off connections you don’t need
- Hotspot and tethering: Google lists these as high-drain features. Turn them off when no one is using them.
- Wi-Fi, Location, Bluetooth: Samsung recommends turning off whichever of these you aren’t using.
- Prefer Wi-Fi: Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than mobile networks, provided the signal is strong. A weak mobile signal is itself a battery drain.
- 5G Auto: Apple recommends it on supported iPhone models.
- Airplane mode: use it only when you don’t need a mobile connection.
Step 5: Use the built-in power-saving modes
On iPhone, Low Power Mode reduces or disables some features, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh and visual effects. Apple’s newer Adaptive Power feature requires iOS 26 or later and a listed iPhone model, so don’t expect it on every device.

What to do when the phone is already hot
Google says: “Your battery will drain much faster when it’s hot, even if you’re not using it.” Cooling the phone therefore protects battery life too.
- Stop demanding tasks: video calls, camera recording, long navigation, streaming and gaming. Don’t do these while charging.
- Move the phone out of direct sun or an enclosed space such as a closed car or tight pocket.
- If it is too hot, unplug it and stop using it until it cools.
- If a Pixel keeps shutting down from heat, contact Pixel support.
Don’t put the phone in a freezer or use ice. None of the manufacturer guidance supports abrupt cooling. Samsung notes that some warmth during fast charging, gaming or streaming is normal. Only a severely overheated phone needs a rest period.

If drain continues
- After an update: background work can raise drain temporarily. Wait a few days, then check usage again before treating it as a lasting fault.
- Persistent drain: recheck app and system usage, run available diagnostics, or contact support. A single setting is rarely the culprit.
- Battery wear: on iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, look for Battery Health & Charging. Apple states rechargeable batteries have limited lifespans and may eventually need replacement, but a warm or fast-draining phone doesn’t automatically need a new battery.
