Choose Element if your organization needs control over where and how its messaging service is run, Matrix federation, or an air-gapped deployment—and has the capacity to operate or manage it. Choose Slack if you want a hosted workspace with a large app directory and built-in channels, workflows, canvases, and huddles. Neither is universally better: the deciding factors are deployment responsibility, partner access, required integrations, retention, and total cost.
How Element and Slack differ
Element is a messaging client and collaboration platform built on Matrix, an open standard. Its product options include self-hosted and managed deployments; its materials also describe federation between Matrix-based networks. Slack is a hosted workspace service organized around channels and direct messages, with collaboration features and an app directory.
That difference shapes the choice more than a feature checklist does. With Element, the organization can choose a deployment model and federation rules, but must establish who handles operations and policy. With Slack, the service is hosted, and available controls and capabilities depend on the plan.
Compare the practical differences
| Decision | Element | Slack | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting and control | Self-hosted or managed options; Element describes air-gapped deployments for Sovereign setups. | Hosted plans. | Who runs infrastructure, applies updates, handles backups, and supports users? |
| Working with other organizations | Matrix federation can connect separate Matrix-based networks. Element describes closed, ecosystem, and open federation modes. | Slack Connect supports external collaboration within Slack’s workspace model; availability varies by plan. | Do partners need to connect independently operated networks, or collaborate through Slack channels and DMs? |
| Integrations | Element describes bridges, bots, widgets, and integrations including Jira and OpenProject. | Slack advertises more than 2,600 apps in its directory. | Check each required connector’s current availability, maintenance, support, and plan eligibility. |
| Calls and collaboration | Element describes voice and video, polls, attachments, and collaboration add-ons. | Slack lists huddles, clips, canvases, lists, and workflows, with some plan limits. | Confirm which features are native, included in the intended plan, and sufficient for your workflows. |
| History and retention | Element Enterprise pricing describes unlimited data history; actual policies depend on deployment and configuration. | Free provides 90-day access to message and file history, and content older than one year is permanently deleted. Paid plans list full history. | Check retention, exports, legal holds, and migration requirements for the exact plan or deployment. |
| Cost and administration | Community is free software; self-hosting can still require infrastructure, operations, and support. | Free and paid hosted plans, with features and prices varying by plan and billing period. | Include licenses, hosting, support, compliance controls, migration, and administrator time in the comparison. |
Choose Element when control and federation matter
Element is the stronger fit when the organization’s requirements include operating its own messaging infrastructure, choosing a managed deployment with specific controls, or connecting Matrix-based networks through federation. Element’s pricing page describes a free, official FOSS Community distribution under AGPL; paid Enterprise self-hosted deployments; and Sovereign options that include air-gapped deployment. The software being free does not make deployment and ongoing operation cost-free.

Federation and Slack Connect address external collaboration differently. Matrix federation is designed to connect separate Matrix-based networks under configured federation rules. Slack Connect lets teams collaborate across organizations inside Slack’s workspace model. Slack’s plan comparison limits Free to one-to-one external messages, while paid plans support broader external collaboration. Choose based on how partners actually need to connect, not simply whether they work outside your organization.
Choose Slack when a hosted workspace and app ecosystem fit
Slack is a practical fit when the organization wants a hosted service and its channels, app directory, workflows, canvases, and huddles match the team’s work. Slack advertises more than 2,600 directory apps, but that count does not establish that every required integration is available on every plan or behaves as needed. Test essential apps and workflow dependencies against the plan under consideration.

Account for Slack Free’s history and feature limits
Slack’s official plan comparison lists 90-day access to messages and files on Free, up to 10 integrations, and restrictions on huddles and external messaging compared with paid plans. It also states that Free-plan content older than one year is permanently deleted. Pro and higher plans list full message history and broader capabilities. Because plan features can change, verify the live comparison before choosing a plan or migrating existing conversations.

Check integrations before planning a switch
Slack’s large directory and Element’s bridges, bots, widgets, and named integrations are not interchangeable guarantees. Verify the exact tools your team relies on, including whether a connector is supported, what data it transfers, and who maintains it.
In particular, Element’s documentation says its EMS Slack bridge is no longer available for purchase and is documented for existing customers. Do not assume a new customer can buy that bridge as a migration route from Slack. Establish the status and support responsibility of any alternative before depending on it.

Compare security and data control against your requirements
Element describes end-to-end encryption by default, stating that only conversation participants can decrypt messages and data, including voice and video. Its materials also say administrators can configure rooms that are not encrypted. Self-hosting, federation controls, and air-gapped deployment options provide choices about operation and data control, but encryption, identity, retention, backups, and administration still depend on deployment and configuration.
Slack lists encryption at rest and in transit across its plans, with additional security and administration features varying by plan. These descriptions are not equivalent claims: encryption at rest and in transit does not mean end-to-end encryption. The vendor materials do not provide an independent, directly comparable security assessment, so a categorical claim that one is more secure is not established. Compare each platform with your threat model, key-control requirements, compliance obligations, and operational capacity.

Make the decision with a short requirements check
- Choose the operating model. Decide whether your team needs self-hosting, managed deployment, or a hosted workspace, and assign responsibility for updates, backups, support, and policy.
- Map external collaboration. List partner organizations and determine whether they need Matrix federation or Slack Connect, then confirm access on the relevant plan or deployment.
- Test must-have integrations. Validate the exact connectors and workflows your team uses, including availability, maintenance, data behavior, and plan restrictions.
- Set history and compliance requirements. Define retention, export, legal hold, and migration needs, then confirm they are met by the specific plan and configuration.
- Calculate total cost. Compare subscription charges with infrastructure, operations, support, administration, compliance, and migration costs.
Bottom line
Element fits teams that prioritize deployment control, Matrix interoperability, federation, or air-gapped operation and can support their chosen setup. Slack fits teams that prefer a hosted workspace and can meet their collaboration needs within its app, plan, and history limits. Decide using your real partner workflows, essential integrations, retention rules, and operating capacity—not a generic feature-count or security-winner claim.
