You can reduce the risk of exposing identifying metadata when sharing documents with a journalist, but no channel or cleanup step guarantees anonymity. Start by asking the newsroom for its verified secure submission route—often SecureDrop, if available—and share only what the journalist needs. If you must send a file, consider its metadata and visible contents separately: encryption can protect a message in transit without removing information embedded in the file.
1. Agree on a verified submission route
Before sending anything sensitive, consider what could happen if you were identified. Contact the journalist through a method you can verify, and ask which secure submission channels the newsroom supports. Use the newsroom’s official instructions rather than a link supplied by an unverified account.
If the newsroom operates SecureDrop, its official submission page is designed to support anonymous tips. The Freedom of the Press Foundation explains that SecureDrop routes traffic over Tor, but anonymity still depends in part on what you reveal in your documents and messages. See Freedom of the Press Foundation’s guidance on confidential tip pages.
SecureDrop is not available at every newsroom. If the journalist does not offer it, ask which alternative they recommend and follow their current instructions. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) describes several options, but its channel and file-size recommendations date to 2021 and should not override a newsroom’s updated guidance: CPJ’s source-protection guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Decide whether to send the original file
A document’s visible content and its metadata create different risks. The text, names, handwriting, or details in an image may identify you even if file metadata has been removed. Metadata may also reveal information about a file’s creator, device, location, or timing. The Freedom of the Press Foundation notes that information can be less risky to share than a document, which may contain embedded details about the file: “Here’s how to share sensitive leaks with the press”.
Ask the journalist whether they need the original document. If they only need to understand what it says, sharing selected information may expose less than sending the complete file. A screenshot or a photograph taken with a conventional camera can avoid some metadata associated with an original file, but it is not automatically safe: the image may reveal identifying details in its contents or clues about the device used.

3. Choose a channel that fits the file and the risk
| Option | When it may fit | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Newsroom SecureDrop | The newsroom operates a verified instance and directs you to use it. | Availability varies. A submission does not prevent identification through the document or messages you provide. |
| End-to-end encrypted messaging | The journalist agrees to use a direct messaging channel, especially for a smaller file. | Encryption of message contents does not necessarily hide who communicated or when. Devices and accounts can also be exposed. |
| OnionShare | The journalist recommends it for a larger file. | Follow current newsroom instructions and consider risks beyond the transfer tool. |
In its November 2021 guidance, CPJ recommends Signal or another end-to-end encrypted service for documents under 100 MB when SecureDrop is unavailable, and OnionShare for larger documents. This is dated guidance, not a guarantee that those options are appropriate for every newsroom or situation. Confirm the journalist’s current instructions before transferring a file.
End-to-end encryption can help keep message contents private while they travel between devices. It does not necessarily hide communication metadata—such as who contacted whom and when—from the service provider. Access to either endpoint, such as an unlocked or compromised device, is another risk. CPJ discusses these distinctions in its Digital Safety Kit.

4. Reduce file-level clues and check what you send
If the original file is necessary, consider removing identifying metadata before sharing it, then inspect the resulting copy. Treat this as risk reduction, not proof that every identifying detail has been removed. Keep the original separate if the journalist may need it later, and ask before sending additional versions.
Screenshots and photos have their own pitfalls. A screenshot may include clues about the source’s device or other visible details. CPJ also warns that blurred or obscured content can sometimes be recovered, so do not rely on blur as a safe way to conceal sensitive text. If a detail must not be disclosed, ask the journalist how they want to handle it rather than assuming a visual cover-up is irreversible.

5. Protect copies after receipt
Encrypting a computer, phone, or external drive can help protect documents stored on that device. It does not remove metadata from a file you are about to transmit. CPJ recommends encrypting devices, documents, and external drives where possible; storage protection and metadata cleanup address different risks.

What these steps can—and cannot—do
- Use a newsroom’s verified secure submission route when available and appropriate.
- Share only the information the journalist needs, and assess visible content as well as embedded metadata.
- Choose a transfer channel with the journalist; encryption of message contents is not the same as anonymity.
- Do not assume screenshots, redactions, metadata removal, or any named tool makes a source untraceable.
