If cellular reception is poor indoors but your Wi-Fi and broadband work reliably, Wi-Fi calling is usually the simplest fix. If a usable cellular signal reaches a window, upstairs room, or another antenna location but fades inside, a compatible cellular signal booster may extend it indoors. A conventional booster cannot create a cellular signal where its outside antenna cannot receive one.
How Wi-Fi calling and signal boosters differ
Wi-Fi calling uses your internet connection
Wi-Fi calling carries carrier calls and texts over Wi-Fi instead of using the phone’s cellular radio connection. It requires a supported phone and account, the feature enabled, a working Wi-Fi connection, and—in many cases—an emergency address on file. Carrier requirements differ: Verizon says call quality depends on the Wi-Fi connection’s signal and bandwidth; AT&T lists a Wi-Fi connection, compatible phone, eligible plan, and HD Voice; and T-Mobile lists a Wi-Fi router with high-speed internet, a Wi-Fi-calling-enabled smartphone, and a valid 911 address.
A cellular booster extends a signal that already exists
A mobile or cellular signal booster receives an existing signal outside and retransmits it indoors. The outside antenna needs a usable signal from your carrier; if there is none where you can place that antenna, a conventional repeater cannot manufacture coverage. The UK regulator Ofcom explains that repeaters work best where a good outdoor signal can be boosted inside, often with the receiving antenna near a window or upstairs.
A carrier indoor-cell device is a separate option
Some carriers offer an internet-connected indoor cell device. For example, AT&T describes its Cell Booster as a mini cell tower that uses the customer’s internet connection to create a 4G LTE signal indoors. Availability and eligibility depend on the carrier and address, and the device depends on working broadband. AT&T’s stated coverage of up to 3,000 square feet for Cell Booster and 15,000 square feet for Cell Booster Pro is a company-published claim, not an independent comparative test.

Which option fits your indoor call problem?
| What you observe | Likely first option | Why and what to check |
|---|---|---|
| Calls fail indoors, but Wi-Fi is strong and broadband is stable | Try carrier Wi-Fi calling | It routes calls over Wi-Fi. Check phone and account eligibility, enable the setting, and provide the requested emergency address. Verizon; AT&T |
| Wi-Fi calling is unreliable only in a distant room | Improve Wi-Fi coverage | A Wi-Fi extender may help a Wi-Fi dead zone; it does not boost cellular service or fix a slow, unstable, or failed internet connection. Verizon |
| Cellular service works outdoors or at a window but fades indoors | Consider a compatible cellular booster | It needs an existing outside signal. Check carrier and band compatibility, coverage area, installation requirements, and local rules. Ofcom |
| There is no usable cellular signal outside, but broadband is reliable | Use Wi-Fi calling; check whether your carrier offers an indoor-cell device | A conventional repeater needs a signal to receive. An internet-connected carrier device may be an alternative where offered and eligible. AT&T; Ofcom |
| Broadband is out or unreliable | Neither internet-dependent option is dependable | Wi-Fi calling needs working Wi-Fi and internet; AT&T’s Cell Booster uses the internet connection too. Cellular service, if available, is the alternative path. Verizon; AT&T |
Diagnose cellular reception, Wi-Fi coverage, and broadband reliability separately before buying equipment. There is no established independent head-to-head result showing that Wi-Fi calling or a consumer booster succeeds more often across homes; the right choice depends on your location, carrier, phone, building, and internet service.
Check Wi-Fi calling eligibility and emergency calling
- Check carrier support. Review your carrier’s current device and account requirements, then enable Wi-Fi calling in your phone’s settings. Support is not guaranteed just because of a phone’s brand or age.
- Confirm the connection is in use. Phone and carrier indicators vary; check your device or carrier guidance to verify that a call is using Wi-Fi calling.
- Enter the requested emergency address and keep it current. Verizon says it uses the registered address to route emergency calls when cellular service is unavailable, and warns that internet congestion or an outage can affect a 911 call. AT&T says 911 uses cellular when possible; when a call uses Wi-Fi, routing relies on device and Wi-Fi network location data, and losing Wi-Fi during the call disconnects it. Read the current details from Verizon and AT&T.
- Check terms before traveling. International calling, special-service numbers, charges, and availability abroad vary by carrier.
Verizon’s FAQ estimates 1–5 MB of data for a voice call and 6–30 MB for a one-minute video call, depending on resolution. Those are data-use estimates, not guarantees of call quality; actual usage can vary.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Check booster compatibility, rules, and safety
- Verify the exact device and carrier. Confirm that the booster supports your carrier’s bands and the area you need to cover, and that it is intended for fixed or mobile use as applicable. Approval in one country does not establish legality or compatibility elsewhere.
- Follow the rules where you live. In the United States, consumer boosters must meet FCC certification and network-protection requirements, and provider consent and registration rules apply. Follow current FCC and carrier instructions; Verizon’s registration guidance is one carrier-specific reference. FCC rulemaking describes the consent and registration obligations in its consumer booster guidance.
- Install only as specified. Use the manufacturer-approved antennas and cables, place antennas as instructed, and stop operating the device if the FCC or your carrier directs you to do so. FCC safeguards are intended to reduce harmful network interference. See the FCC’s signal booster information.
- Understand the emergency-call warning. The FCC-mandated consumer label states: “WARNING. E911 location information may not be provided or may be inaccurate for calls served by using this device.” The warning describes a risk; it does not say every call will have an inaccurate location. FCC 14-138.
Rules differ by country. The US requirements above concern FCC-regulated consumer boosters. Ofcom says static repeaters that meet its technical requirements may be used in the UK under a licence-exemption regime, while noncompliant repeaters remain illegal. Ofcom’s listed devices are not an endorsement and do not establish US approval. Check Ofcom’s current guidance for UK use.
