Android can defer background CPU and network activity when the device is idle or its screen is off, so a Termux or proot workload may slow down or become unreachable. That does not necessarily mean Docker paused or stopped a container. First identify where the workload actually runs, then check its process state, Android power behavior, network access, and—if Docker is truly involved—the Docker host’s container state.
First identify what is running on Android
“Docker on Android” can describe different setups, and the right fix depends on which one you have:
- Native Termux process: Termux runs programs on Android’s host OS by default. It is not automatically running them in Docker, a virtual machine, a chroot, or proot.
- Linux distribution in proot-distro: The Linux environment is provided through proot-distro, but it remains subject to Android’s background power management.
- Docker CLI connected to a remote host: The container runs on that Linux host, not on the Android phone. Investigate the remote host and the phone’s connection to it.

Why screen-off behavior can look like a stopped container
Android Doze can defer background CPU and network activity after a device has been unused for a while. Android 7.0 and later also applies a lighter set of optimizations when the screen turns off, even if the device is moving. As a result, work may slow or pause, and a service may stop responding over the network. Those symptoms alone do not show whether a process exited, was suspended, or is still running but unreachable. Diagnose the failure before changing settings
- Confirm the runtime. Determine whether the task is native Termux, inside proot-distro, or in Docker on a remote Linux host.
- Check whether the process still exists. Look for the task in the environment where it runs. Distinguish a running process from one that has exited or been suspended.
- Separate process state from reachability. If a server or endpoint cannot be reached, test whether the workload is still running and whether network access has changed. Doze can affect networking as well as background CPU activity.
- If Docker is involved, check the container state and logs on the Docker host. A container explicitly marked paused is a different issue from Android screen-off throttling.
Use a Termux wake lock for active screen-off work
For a long-running task in Termux, try the Termux wake-lock action or run termux-wake-lock before turning off the screen. Termux documents that without a wake lock, tasks may run very slowly or be paused; it also warns that keeping one active increases standby battery use. Release the lock when the work is finished. A wake lock is a targeted option for work that needs the CPU to keep running with the screen off—not a cost-free or guaranteed way to keep every service available indefinitely. Android recommends using the lightest suitable mechanism and cautions that wake locks can have a substantial battery impact: Android guidance on keeping a device awake.

Manage proot-distro sessions without confusing them with power management
proot-distro provides commands for listing and stopping detached sessions, which can help you inspect and manage a workload’s session. A detached session is a way to keep track of a process; it does not override Android’s Doze or screen-off policies. Consult the project’s documented process-management commands at proot-distro documentation.
Check Docker’s paused state on the host
Docker’s pause command deliberately suspends processes in a container using the Linux freezer cgroup. If Docker reports the container as paused, investigate the host, an operator action, or automation that may have paused it. Do not attribute that explicit state to Android sleep. Docker documents the behavior at docker container pause.

If the container is on a remote host, check its status and logs there, then separately verify the phone’s network connection. Android power behavior on the phone may interfere with reaching a remote service, but it does not establish that the remote container stopped.
Adjust Android background settings cautiously
Review Android’s battery and background-activity settings for Termux and any companion app the workload depends on. Menu names and vendor behavior vary, so there is no single settings path that applies to every phone. An optimization exemption may help in some circumstances, but it is not a promise of uninterrupted service. Choose the approach that matches the workload

No single change guarantees indefinite uptime. Device-specific power management, memory pressure, network behavior, and platform changes can still interrupt work. For a task that does not need to run continuously, prefer an appropriate scheduled or background-work mechanism over keeping the CPU awake without a clear need.
