Element is worth evaluating when data control, deployment choice, federation, or end-to-end encrypted communications are priorities. Teams may be harder to replace if staff depend on Microsoft 365 workflows, particular meeting or calling features, or licensed compliance controls. The decision should be based on your actual workflows, configuration, and contractual requirements—not a blanket feature-parity claim.
When Element may be a good fit
Element describes enterprise deployments in the cloud or on-premises and presents data control and end-to-end encryption as core benefits. Those characteristics can make it a candidate for organizations that want greater control over where collaboration services run, or that require encrypted communications. These are Element’s product claims, not independent validation that a particular deployment meets an organization’s security or regulatory obligations.
Element’s enterprise materials describe capabilities including single sign-on (SSO), retention and compliance support, antivirus, and enterprise mobility management. Its plans page also lists options such as LDAP and Active Directory authentication, OIDC SSO, identity and access management, visible in-room auditing, room management, content scanning, and enterprise workplace features. Availability depends on the selected plan and configuration; confirm the requirements and commitments for the deployment you are considering.
Element may be especially suitable when an organization can operate or procure the administration and support it needs, and when control, federation, or encryption matters more than maintaining every existing Teams-centered workflow.

Where Teams may be difficult to replace
Teams can sit inside a broader Microsoft 365 environment rather than functioning as a standalone chat app. Microsoft presents it alongside Outlook, Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, and other Microsoft 365 apps. If staff use those services to coordinate meetings, share files, manage projects, or automate processes, replacing Teams alone may leave the underlying workflows intact but change how employees reach them—or require separate changes to those workflows.
Teams licensing is also not a single fixed package. Microsoft Learn says Teams can be licensed through qualifying Microsoft 365 offerings or as a standalone SKU, and its service description says feature availability depends on subscription and license. Microsoft’s security and compliance overview likewise ties information-protection capabilities to Microsoft 365, Office 365, and associated standalone licenses. Identify the exact entitlements in your organization before treating a Teams feature as included or assuming Element provides an equivalent.

How the platforms compare for a business
| Decision area | Element | Microsoft Teams | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting and data control | Element describes enterprise deployments on-premises or in the cloud and positions them as giving organizations data control. | The sources cited here do not establish a comparable deployment choice for your Teams configuration. | Deployment architecture, data location, administrative ownership, and who is responsible for operation and support. |
| Encryption and external communication | Element describes end-to-end encryption. Its Teams bridge announcement states that the usual end-to-end encryption does not apply to conversations with Teams users. | Do not infer equivalent encryption properties from the fact that a conversation is available in Teams or through a bridge. | Which communication paths must be end-to-end encrypted, how federation works, and what changes when a third-party bridge is used. |
| Administration and compliance | Element lists enterprise identity, auditing, retention, scanning, compliance, and mobility options; availability varies by plan and configuration. | Microsoft says capabilities depend on the subscription and license, including for security and compliance. | Required identity provider, provisioning, room governance, audit records, retention, eDiscovery, content scanning, mobile controls, and contractual terms. |
| Meetings, calling, and work tools | Element’s 2021 bridge announcement described messaging and voice and video conferences between Element and Teams users; it does not establish current bridge availability or full feature parity. | Teams may be part of workflows involving Microsoft 365 apps and other licensed meeting or calling capabilities. | Meeting and telephony needs, calendars, files, apps, bots, external guests, and room devices—not just chat. |
| Price and total cost | Not stated as a current, comparable organization-specific price in the sources reviewed. | Not stated as a current, comparable organization-specific price in the sources reviewed. | Obtain current written quotes for the region, user count, deployment, support, add-ons, migration, and any parallel operation. |
Security, compliance, and the bridge caveat
Encryption, hosting control, and compliance are related but different questions. An organization should determine whether end-to-end encryption is a requirement for all conversations or only selected ones, and separately identify its needs for data location, retention, auditability, records access, and legal obligations. Element’s enterprise feature descriptions are a starting point for those discussions, not proof that a deployment satisfies a specific jurisdiction’s rules.
Microsoft’s security and compliance overview says Teams content can take up to 24 hours to discover. That is a documented operational limit for content discovery, not a measure of general Teams performance; Microsoft also notes that information-protection capabilities depend on applicable Microsoft 365, Office 365, or standalone licenses. Confirm whether the relevant control and timing meet your records and compliance requirements.

Element’s 2021 announcement described a bridge for individual and group messaging, plus voice and video conferences between Element and Teams users. It explicitly warned that Element’s usual end-to-end encryption does not apply to conversations with Teams users, and said affected rooms are flagged. Treat this as a transition option to investigate, not evidence that the bridge is currently available on the same terms or that bridged conversations retain Element’s normal encryption properties. Ask Element to confirm current availability, limits, and terms in writing.
How to evaluate a replacement without missing hidden dependencies
- Document your current Teams setup. Record the Microsoft 365 or standalone Teams SKU, add-ons, region, users, and compliance features in use. Include meeting and calling arrangements and any organization-specific configuration.
- Inventory the work around Teams. List chat and channels, meetings, telephony, external guests, files, SharePoint and OneDrive use, calendars, apps, bots, room devices, retention, eDiscovery, and identity workflows. Note which teams rely on each item and what would break if it changed.
- Set security and control requirements. Decide whether end-to-end encryption, self-hosting, federation, data residency, or operational sovereignty is mandatory or preferred. Specify which communications must meet each requirement.
- Map each requirement to an Element plan and deployment. Confirm the exact tier, architecture, identity and provisioning options, auditing, retention, scanning, mobile management, support, and service-level commitments. Request written confirmation for requirements that are contractual or compliance-critical.
- Validate external communication paths. Test how staff will communicate with organizations that remain on Teams, and establish which messages or calls use a bridge and what their encryption properties are. Verify current bridge availability and terms rather than relying on the 2021 announcement alone.
- Compare full costs, not license labels. Request current quotes and include hosting, support, add-ons, bridge costs if applicable, training, data migration, and the expense of running both systems during a transition. Compare only the capabilities actually included in each proposed plan.
- Run a representative pilot. Include different user groups and test provisioning, mobile access, meetings, support, records handling, migration, and recovery against real workflows. Resolve gaps before expanding beyond the pilot.
What a sensible decision looks like
Choose Element for a deeper evaluation when its deployment and security model align with your priorities and you can meet your administration, integration, and support needs. Retaining Teams may make more sense when Microsoft 365 integration or specific licensed meetings, calling, or compliance capabilities are central to daily work. A phased transition can be considered where interoperability is useful, but only after validating current bridge availability and accepting its stated encryption limitation.
