Choose a data center UPS by matching its real-power and apparent-power limits to the critical load, specifying battery runtime for the site’s generator or shutdown plan, and selecting redundancy for the failures and maintenance events the facility must withstand. Then check whether the full electrical path—not just the UPS units—can support that requirement, and have a qualified electrical engineer validate the design.

How much UPS capacity does a data center need?

Start with an inventory of the equipment that must remain powered. Establish its operating demand in both kilowatts (kW) and kilovolt-amperes (kVA), then add documented growth and account for the load that must remain protected when a component is unavailable. Do not size from a single nameplate total or treat kW and kVA as interchangeable.

Build the load estimate

  • List the protected IT equipment and any mechanical or auxiliary loads that the design is intended to support.
  • Use measured operating demand where available; otherwise, document the assumptions used to estimate it. Include the equipment’s power factor, which relates real power in kW to apparent power in kVA.
  • Apply the planned growth forecast and design margin. Eaton’s live sizing guide recommends at least 15% growth over a five-year period in its example. That is vendor guidance, not a code requirement or universal data-center allowance.
  • Model the selected redundancy arrangement: the UPS capacity available after the specified unit or module failure must still meet the protected load.

For example, a watt rating can be converted to volt-amperes by dividing watts by the equipment power factor. In practice, confirm the UPS’s rated kW and kVA limits at the expected load power factor; a unit can have enough capacity by one rating and still be constrained by the other. Eaton’s public sizing material is general guidance and directs users with three-phase utility power to specialist sizing help, so facility-scale design requires project-specific engineering rather than a consumer-style multiplier.

Check the conditions behind the rating

Compare the UPS’s output limits with the expected load, and verify input and output voltage, phase, overload behavior, and available fault current. Include any supported cooling, control, or other auxiliary loads only after determining that they belong on UPS power. The sizing basis should state the design load, growth assumptions, redundancy failure case, and headroom remaining in that case.

How much battery runtime should you specify?

Set runtime from the operating plan, not from a generic number of minutes. A UPS commonly bridges the interval until generators start and the load transfers, or supplies enough time for workload migration or an orderly shutdown. Schneider Electric author Mark Hurley describes generators as long-term backup—typically days—and UPS systems as a bridge—typically minutes—until generators support the critical load.

In a 2020 Schneider Electric article, generator start and transfer is described as typically taking 10–20 seconds. The same article gives the following runtime examples; these are source-specific illustrations, not universal requirements or current design standards.

Use case in Schneider Electric’s 2020 article Illustrative UPS runtime
Hyperscale 1–2 minutes
Cloud and colocation 5 minutes
Financial settings 10–15 minutes

Choose the site’s runtime by accounting for generator response and transfer behavior, fuel and transfer arrangements, application resilience, the time needed to migrate workloads or shut down safely, and the consequences of a delayed start. A facility that relies on orderly shutdown has a different runtime requirement from one that expects generators to carry the load.

Specify battery performance at the required conditions

Ask for discharge data at the actual design load, and verify the required runtime with battery discharge curves. The design should account for battery age, operating temperature, end voltage, and the capacity required at the end of the planned service period—not just performance from new batteries under ideal conditions. Battery chemistry also affects footprint, maintenance, replacement planning, and lifecycle cost. Schneider Electric’s 2020 discussion compares VRLA and lithium-ion batteries, but its lifecycle and cost assertions should not be treated as current general facts without project-specific, up-to-date evidence.

Should the UPS design be N, N+1, or 2N?

N is the capacity required to serve the design load. N+1 adds one unit or module beyond that base requirement; 2N duplicates full capacity or a power path. The appropriate choice depends on what must remain online through a failure or maintenance event, and whether the rest of the electrical distribution is independently arranged.

Arrangement What it provides Key design question
N Capacity sized to the design load, with no additional unit or module beyond that requirement. Can the facility accept loss of UPS capacity for a failure or maintenance event?
N+1 One additional UPS unit or module beyond the capacity needed for the design load. The remaining capacity must be able to support the full critical load after the specified single-module failure. Do controls, bypasses, distribution, and the remaining units actually allow the critical load to continue through the failure and planned maintenance scenarios?
2N Two full-capacity systems or paths, with either side designed to support the critical load when the other is unavailable. Are the paths sufficiently independent, including switchgear, bypasses, distribution, and connections to the loads?

Eaton describes parallel UPS or modular arrangements as common ways to implement redundancy; Schneider Electric also describes paralleling unitary UPSs or providing reserve capacity. A 2N arrangement can offer a separate full-capacity side, but it is more costly than N+1 according to Schneider’s article. Neither label alone proves end-to-end resilience: shared components, common-mode events, or incorrect connection of dual-corded equipment can defeat nominal redundancy.

Compare the failure case, not only the name

For each proposed architecture, identify the load that remains supported after a unit, module, or path failure and during planned maintenance. Compare common-mode exposure, expansion options, efficiency at expected loading, footprint, capital and operating cost, and operational complexity. Confirm that independent A/B power paths reach the intended equipment and that maintenance procedures preserve the required service level.

Does a UPS arrangement determine the facility’s Uptime Institute Tier?

No. Uptime Institute’s Tier descriptions apply to data-center site infrastructure, not to a UPS product grade. Its overview describes Tier I as basic capacity with UPS and generator support; Tier II adds redundant capacity components; Tier III is concurrently maintainable and has redundant distribution paths; and Tier IV uses several independent, physically isolated systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As a result, N+1 UPS does not automatically make a site Tier III, and 2N UPS does not automatically make it Tier IV. Classification depends on the complete facility design and the applicable Tier standard, including distribution and other site infrastructure.

Should cooling equipment be on the UPS?

Decide from the facility’s thermal behavior and control sequence rather than assuming that all cooling must—or can safely—ride through on UPS. Some designs allow cooling to restart after generator transfer; whether that is acceptable depends on how quickly the room or racks approach thermal limits, the cooling equipment’s restart time, and the generator-transfer interval.

Schneider Electric’s 2020 article notes that lower-density rooms may sometimes tolerate a cooling restart interval, while denser racks can reach thermal limits faster. Its rack-density examples are not universal thresholds. Use the site’s thermal model, equipment restart characteristics, and operating sequence to determine which cooling and control loads require UPS support.

The available evidence does not establish a source-backed comparison of online double-conversion and line-interactive modes for facility-scale data centers. Treat conversion mode as a specification item to resolve with current manufacturer data and project engineering rather than assuming one mode is universally appropriate.

Validate the design before selection

Have a qualified electrical engineer review the load model, protection and fault conditions, redundancy failure cases, runtime basis, battery assumptions, bypass and maintenance arrangements, and facility distribution paths. The final design should demonstrate that the specified critical load remains supported in the failure and maintenance scenarios the facility has chosen to cover.
