To move data to a PS5, connect your old PS4 or PS5 and the new console to the same network, then use the PS5’s Data Transfer option. What transfers depends on the source console and whether initial setup is finished: games and eligible saves can move from a PS4 after setup, but PS4 user information and console settings must be transferred during initial setup. You can also redownload digital games, use a PS4 extended-storage drive for PS4 games, and move saves through PlayStation Plus cloud storage or USB where supported.
Before you set up the PS5
Identify your PS5 model and follow the matching instructions for its base or feet. Connect the console to a display and the internet, install the latest system software, and sign in to PlayStation. You can use an existing PlayStation account; if the PlayStation App is already configured, Sony also supports signing in through it. See PlayStation’s PS5 setup instructions.
If you plan to transfer from a PS4, update the PS4 and sign in with the same PlayStation account you intend to use on the PS5. Synchronize the PS4’s trophy information manually, then connect both consoles to the same network. Wi-Fi works. For a wired connection, commercially available LAN cables are supported; if the consoles normally use Wi-Fi, wiring them can improve transfer speed. If both are already wired to the network, you do not need to connect them directly to each other with another Ethernet cable.
- Keep both consoles powered on during the transfer.
- Do not change network settings or run an internet connection test while data is transferring. PlayStation Support warns this may damage or lose data.
- One destination PS5 can receive data from one source console per transfer: a PS4 or another PS5.
Transfer data during setup or afterward
- During first-time setup: Follow the PS5’s on-screen instructions and select the data-transfer option when it appears. Keep the source console on and follow the prompts.
- After setup: Turn on the source console. On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue, then follow the prompts.
The PS5 may restart automatically during transfer. Some items, including game data, can continue transferring afterward. Check Downloads/Uploads in Control Center for progress; a game’s thumbnail appears on the Games home screen when it is ready to play. The destination PS5 does not transfer data that is already on it, and source login passcodes transfer too, so you may need the same passcode when signing in.

What transfers from a PS4 or another PS5?
The transfer options depend on the source console and when you start. The table summarizes the categories PlayStation lists; “eligible” means content supported for play or use on PS5.
| Source | During initial PS5 setup | After PS5 setup |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 | User/account information for users who signed in on the PS4, console settings, eligible saved data, and games playable on PS5. | Eligible saved data and games playable on PS5. Saves are limited to the user signed in on the PS5; PS4 user/account information and console settings are not listed for post-setup transfer. |
| PS5 | User/account information, eligible saved data, screenshots and video clips, games playable on PS5, and listed console settings. | The same listed categories: user/account information, eligible saved data, screenshots and video clips, games playable on PS5, and console settings. |
These are Sony’s stated transfer categories, not a promise that every item or game is transferable. See PlayStation’s PS4/PS5 data-transfer instructions for the current transfer prompts and category details.

Disc games
Insert a PS4 game disc into a PS5 with a disc drive to install the game. Keep the disc inserted whenever you play. PS4 discs do not work on PS5 Digital Edition.

PS4 games on an extended-storage drive
If a drive was already formatted as PS4 extended storage, connect it to the PS5 to access its PS4 game data. Sony specifies USB 3.0 or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB for extended storage, but warns that not all devices work. Formatting a drive deletes its data, so do not format one that contains files you need. PS5 games cannot be played from USB extended storage; move those game files back to console storage or an M.2 SSD. See PlayStation’s extended-storage instructions.
Saved data
PlayStation Plus members can download saves from cloud storage. PS4 saves can also be copied to USB and then copied to the PS5. Sony says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the PS5 to USB, so an external game-storage drive is not a general backup for PS5 saves. See PlayStation’s storage and saved-data guidance.

Check whether your PS4 games will work
Most PS4 games are playable on PS5, but some are marked “Playable on: PS4 only.” Check the specific title in PlayStation’s PS5 compatibility list, which can change. For a compatible disc game, insert the disc, install any required update, and leave the disc inserted while playing.
Troubleshoot a failed or slow transfer
If Data Transfer shows error CE-112069-9, PlayStation’s suggested steps are to switch both consoles to wired network connections, or connect them directly with Ethernet if they were using Wi-Fi; turn off the router for at least five minutes, restart it, and try the transfer again. If you only need saved data, use cloud storage or USB where supported instead of transferring everything. See PlayStation’s CE-112069-9 troubleshooting steps.
