1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes, the current 3CX Windows Softphone can make calls from a Windows PC, and it may work while you travel if your 3CX administrator has enabled remote access and the network allows the required connections. Using a work extension for personal calls is a separate matter: check your employer’s or system owner’s policy first. Also confirm which app you have—3CX’s current Windows Softphone connects to a configured 3CX extension, while its legacy standalone softphone connects to an independent VoIP provider.
Which 3CX Windows softphone do you mean?
The name can refer to two different apps, and their setup is not interchangeable. The current Windows Softphone is part of the 3CX phone system. The older standalone 3CX softphone is intended to connect to an independent VoIP provider, not a 3CX Phone System.
| App | Connects to | Setup and intended use |
|---|---|---|
| Current 3CX Windows Softphone | A configured 3CX system and extension | Provision it with your 3CX URL and sign-in details, or set it up through the 3CX Web Client. It is for calling through your organization’s 3CX system. 3CX Windows Softphone guide |
| Legacy standalone 3CX softphone | An independent VoIP provider | Requires a Windows PC, internet connection, and VoIP provider. 3CX says it is not designed for use with a 3CX Phone System. 3CX standalone softphone |
Can you make calls from a Windows PC?
With the current app, yes. 3CX’s Windows Client documentation describes softphone mode as letting users make and receive calls through a PC or laptop without a deskphone. You still need a configured 3CX extension and access to the relevant system; installing the app alone does not provide a phone account. See The 3CX Windows Client.
Can you use it while traveling?
Potentially. Remote calling depends on both the 3CX system configuration and the network you are using. Ask your 3CX administrator to confirm that remote app access is configured for your extension before you leave.

3CX documents remote app connections through its tunnel. Its firewall guidance lists inbound UDP/TCP port 5090 for the tunnel, and HTTPS on port 443 or 5001—or the system’s configured HTTPS port—for presence and provisioning. Those are system-side requirements; they do not guarantee that a particular hotel, public Wi-Fi, corporate, or destination network will allow the connection. Your administrator may need to check the configuration and network restrictions. See the 3CX firewall and router configuration guide.
An SBC is not a universal requirement for the Windows Softphone. 3CX describes SBCs primarily for connecting remote IP phones to a remote or cloud system, and recommends apps with an inbuilt tunnel as an alternative for remote IP phones. Its guidance suggests considering mobile apps for a single remote cloud phone. Your administrator can determine what applies to your organization’s setup; see the 3CX SBC guide.

Can you use a work extension for personal calls?
The app’s ability to place a call does not grant permission to use a work extension for personal purposes. Check your employer’s acceptable-use policy or ask the system owner or administrator. Also confirm any account limits, charges, or other conditions that apply to your extension; the software documentation does not establish your organization’s rules or your account’s entitlements.
If you are traveling internationally, check applicable provider requirements and local rules for the destination. Whether VoIP is permitted, whether your connection will work, and whether charges apply cannot be determined from the app documentation alone.

Before you rely on it away from the office
- Identify your app. Confirm that you have the current 3CX Windows Softphone for your organization’s 3CX system, rather than the legacy standalone client for an independent VoIP provider.
- Confirm access. Ask your administrator whether your extension is provisioned for the Windows app and remote use.
- Check the network. Confirm that the network you plan to use permits the connection configured by your administrator, including the required tunnel and HTTPS traffic.
- Check personal-use rules. Get approval before using a work extension for personal calls, and clarify any applicable account or provider conditions.
A suitable headset is optional if your PC already has usable audio equipment. 3CX notes headset support for its legacy standalone Windows softphone; that does not establish that a particular model is required or endorsed. 3CX standalone softphone
