For most workers, the best-supported answer is that AI is more likely to change some of the work than to eliminate the entire job—but no global finding can predict what will happen to your particular role. Generative AI can potentially automate some tasks, assist with others, and leave other work dependent on human judgment or action. Whether a task is exposed is not the same as whether an employer will automate it, or whether a job will disappear.

What does it mean for a job to be “exposed” to AI?

Exposure is an estimate of how much an occupation’s tasks could be affected by a technology. It is not a count of jobs already replaced, nor a forecast of what a particular employer will do. The International Labour Organization (ILO) assesses potential effects at the task level, then uses that analysis to estimate occupational exposure. Its index combines occupational data, expert input and AI predictions; the 2025 refinement covers 29,753 occupational tasks and includes 52,558 data points for 2,861 tasks. The added detail makes the analysis more granular than a simple label applied to a job title, but it remains a model of potential effects, not observed job losses. ILO, “Generative AI and jobs: A 2025 update”; ILO, “Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure”.

What current evidence says about replacement and change

Exposure is widespread, but the highest exposure is concentrated

The ILO’s 2025 assessment estimates that one in four workers worldwide are in an occupation with some degree of generative-AI exposure. It concludes that transformation is more likely than redundancy overall because most jobs still include tasks requiring human input. The estimate describes occupational exposure; it does not mean one in four jobs will be lost. Clerical work is the broad occupational group the ILO identifies as most exposed, while 3.3% of global employment falls in the index’s highest exposure gradient. These are global estimates from the ILO’s framework, not risk estimates for a named worker or employer. ILO, 20 May 2025; ILO refined index, 20 May 2025.

Exposure does not tell you whether AI will automate or assist

A task may be technically affected because AI could help perform it, complete part of it, or change how a person does it. An exposure measure alone may not distinguish automation from augmentation. For example, the OECD’s analysis of online vacancies across ten countries found about one-third of vacancies were in occupations it classified as highly exposed to AI. That classification is relative to the study’s exposure distribution; it is not a prediction of one-third job losses. The OECD vacancy estimate and the ILO’s global employment estimate use different populations and methods, so they should not be combined or read as competing counts. OECD, 2024.

Capability is not the same as workplace adoption

Even when a tool could affect a task, an employer must decide whether and how to introduce it. In an interview published on 29 September 2025, ILO Senior Researcher Paweł Gmyrek said, “For the time being, we are still mostly discussing exposure to generative AI.” The interview reported that 9.4% of surveyed Polish workers said their employer had officially introduced generative-AI tools, based on a late-2024 survey. That result describes those surveyed workers in Poland; it is not a global adoption rate. ILO interview with Paweł Gmyrek, 29 September 2025.

AI exposure does not automatically mean an occupation will shrink

Employment projections and exposure estimates answer different questions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected software developer employment to increase 17.9% from 2023 to 2033. That projection is not evidence that AI caused the expected growth; it illustrates why exposure cannot, by itself, be treated as a job-loss forecast. The projection is specific to U.S. software developers and that ten-year period. BLS, “AI impacts in BLS employment projections,” 11 March 2025.

How to think about your own job

Without knowing your occupation, location and actual duties, no reliable individual risk estimate follows from the global figures. Use them as a reason to examine the work itself, not as a verdict about your career. The questions below help organize that examination; they are not a validated test for whether a role is safe.

  1. Name the role and location. Record your occupation, country and, if relevant, industry. Evidence from U.S. projections, global occupational estimates and online vacancies in ten OECD countries describes different workforces.
  2. List recurring tasks. Write down the activities that regularly take your time, rather than relying on your job title. Include both frequent routine work and less frequent responsibilities.
  3. Describe what each task involves. Note whether it is digital and repeatable, or depends on physical presence, interpersonal judgment, accountability or context-specific decisions. These characteristics help you ask where a tool might assist or automate part of the work; none guarantees that a task or job is protected.
  4. Check what has actually changed at your workplace. Has your employer introduced an AI tool? If so, which tasks are workers using it for, and who checks the results or remains accountable? A modeled capability is not proof that your workplace has adopted it.
  5. Separate task change from role change. If a tool takes on one activity, consider whether the remaining work, responsibilities or demand for the role have changed. An affected task does not by itself establish that the whole occupation will be eliminated.

Why no study can give a certain answer about your future

  • The studies measure different things. The ILO estimates global occupational exposure to generative AI; the OECD study analyzes online vacancies across ten countries using its own AI-exposure measure; and the BLS offers U.S. employment projections over 2023–33. Their figures have different definitions, populations and timeframes, so a single blended percentage would be misleading.
  • Potential is not an outcome. An exposure score models which tasks might be affected. It does not establish that a tool can perform them reliably in a real workplace, that an employer will adopt it, or that jobs have already been displaced.
  • Occupations contain different tasks. People with the same job title may spend their time differently. Occupational-level findings cannot resolve those differences for an individual worker.
  • Technology and decisions keep changing. The ILO notes that predicting the future is not possible while the technology is still evolving. Employer choices and how work is organized also matter, so current exposure estimates should not be treated as a timetable for job losses. ILO, “How might generative AI impact different occupations?”, 20 May 2025.

What to take away when weighing career decisions

Current evidence supports a task-level view: AI may automate some activities, assist with others and leave human input important elsewhere. It does not support a blanket yes or no about whether your particular job will disappear. Identify the work you actually do, distinguish possible exposure from adoption, and look for changes at your workplace before treating an occupational estimate as a personal forecast. Do not make a major career decision on an exposure label alone.
