Before paying for a used or refurbished PS5, verify that it works, inspect its condition and serial number, confirm it can access PlayStation services, and get the return and warranty terms in writing. When possible, test the console and controller in person and have the seller reset it before handoff.
Start with the seller and the terms
Check the seller’s ratings and feedback, and ask for the console’s exact model, what is included, why it is being sold, and the original purchase date or receipt if available. Sony recommends reviewing seller reputation when buying a used PlayStation product (PlayStation buying guide).

Before you agree to buy, ask for the return window and warranty details in writing. A private seller’s promise is not the same as a retailer’s documented policy. Confirm who provides any warranty, when it starts, which faults it covers, who pays shipping, how repair or replacement works, and what exclusions apply.
Ask for a demonstration, then test it yourself
Request a recent video before travelling
Ask the seller to show the console powering on, displaying a stable image, connecting to the internet, and testing its buttons and ports. If it is a disc model, ask to see a disc read and eject. Sony recommends video proof for these checks, but a video cannot reveal everything about image quality, overheating, or physical damage.

Check the console in person
Where possible, connect the PS5 to a display and confirm the picture and sound are stable. Try every accessible USB port and the HDMI connection, connect to the internet, and test the controller’s buttons and sticks. On a disc model, insert a game disc, confirm it is recognized, and check that it ejects. Let a game run long enough to watch for unexpected shutdowns, instability, or signs of excessive heat. These are practical inspection steps, not a Sony-prescribed test duration or standardized diagnostic.
Listen for unusual fan noise and check the controller for stick drift during play. Sony’s buyer guide does not define a pass/fail standard for fan noise, drift, remaining lifespan, hours used, or a private-sale diagnostic report, so treat these as useful observations rather than official criteria.
Inspect condition and console identity
Look for cracks, impact damage, excessive dust, corrosion, possible liquid exposure, and damaged HDMI or USB connectors. Check that the serial number is present and legible, and look for broken seals or signs the console has been opened or repaired. Sony’s buyer guide flags broken seals and removed serial numbers; its US warranty terms also list altered, defaced, or removed serial numbers and certain unauthorized service or opening as exclusions (PlayStation buying guide; US PS5 warranty).
An intact seal does not prove the console is fault-free, and a serial number alone does not establish that it has clean ownership. If the serial number is missing or the seller cannot explain the console’s history, weigh that risk against the price and available recourse.

Connect the console to the internet and confirm it can access PlayStation services. Sony warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Also make sure the seller has deactivated the console and no longer retains access. If they cannot demonstrate service access or refuse to remove their account or control, pause the purchase until the issue is resolved.
Before transfer, ask the seller to back up any data they want to keep, sign out and deactivate as appropriate, and reset the PS5. Sony’s Canada guidance recommends backing up data and resetting a console before transferring or disposing of it (Transfer or dispose of your PlayStation console). Confirm that the console reaches initial setup without asking for the former owner’s credentials. Menu paths and reset instructions can vary by region, so use the relevant local PlayStation Support guidance.

- Vertical Stand sold separately
Check the model and everything included
Confirm whether the console is a disc or digital model, and record its exact model or generation. Then check that each advertised item is present and working:
- Console and controller
- Power cable and HDMI cable
- Stand or base, if included
- Any advertised extras
Only count accessories that are actually present and functional. A disc-drive test applies only to a model with a disc drive.
Understand what “used” and “refurbished” mean
“Used” generally means previously owned. “Refurbished” is a seller or program label; it does not, by itself, tell you what was inspected, repaired, or replaced. Ask who refurbished the console and request the specific condition, warranty, and return terms. A marketplace “renewed” label alone is not proof of Sony certification.
Sony’s US buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by Sony’s warranty and separately notes that certified refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty. Sony currently lists a certified refurbished PS5 Digital Edition slim model through PlayStation Direct in the US, but availability and terms can change (US PlayStation buying guide; Certified Refurbished PS5 Digital Edition Console).
Those warranty statements are region-specific. Sony’s UK buying guide says third-party used products may not be covered and notes that this does not affect statutory rights under applicable law (UK PlayStation buying guide). Check the terms and consumer protections that apply where you live rather than assuming a US or UK policy applies elsewhere.
Compare offers on more than price
When choosing between listings, compare the features and protections you can verify. A certified-refurbished listing establishes that such a product category exists, but not a stable price premium or market-wide value comparison. There is no universal “good deal” threshold here; compare current offers for similar models in your country.
