A click alone does not prove your device is infected; entering a password, sharing financial details, or downloading and running a file calls for different steps.
What to do first after clicking a phishing link
- Stop interacting with the message and page. Close the page if it is still open. Do not follow further instructions, call a number shown in a pop-up, or use contact details in the suspicious message. If it claims to be from a company or agency, contact that organization through a number, app, bookmark, or website you already know is genuine. See the FTC’s phishing guidance.
- Work out what you actually did. Did you only open the page, enter a password or other information, download a file, or open and run a file? Your next steps depend on the answer. Closing a page does not establish that an account or device is safe, but clicking by itself also does not establish that malware was installed.
- Use a different trusted device for sensitive account changes if you suspect malware. This helps avoid entering new credentials on a device that may be compromised.
If you entered a password or other personal information
Change exposed passwords through the real service
Open the service’s genuine app or type its known website address yourself, then change the exposed password promptly. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. If you can no longer access the account, use the provider’s official recovery process—not a recovery link in the suspicious message. The FTC and Microsoft both advise changing passwords after a suspected scam or phishing attack (FTC guidance; Microsoft Learn).
Enable multifactor authentication and review account activity
Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA), also called two-factor authentication, if the service offers it. The FTC explains: “Multi-factor authentication makes it harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password.” Review recent sign-ins, recovery methods, and account settings for changes you did not make, and follow the provider’s instructions if anything looks unfamiliar.
MFA methods can include something you know, something you possess—such as a one-time code or security key—or a biometric factor. A security key is optional and only useful for accounts that support it; it does not remove malware or undo information already disclosed.

If you downloaded or opened a suspicious attachment
Opening an attachment does not by itself confirm that malware installed. If a file downloaded or may have run, however, treat the device cautiously until you have checked it:
- Stop signing in to accounts containing sensitive information from that device.
- Update its security software and run a scan. Remove or quarantine anything the scan identifies as a problem.
- If you are unsure how to interpret the result or remove a threat, contact the device manufacturer, a trusted support company, or a knowledgeable helper. The FTC’s malware guidance describes these steps.
A scan can help identify known problems, but general guidance cannot determine whether a particular click executed code or whether a specific device is clean. If the device is used for work, contact IT rather than investigating or attempting extensive cleanup on your own.

If this involved a work device or work account
Tell your workplace IT team or administrator promptly and follow the organization’s incident-response process. Do not wait until you have finished scanning or changing settings: IT may need to secure accounts, investigate activity, or protect other systems. Microsoft provides phishing guidance for organizations.
For a device known or strongly suspected to be infected, FTC small-business guidance advises disconnecting it from the network. For a managed work device, follow your organization’s instructions about how to isolate it and avoid actions that could interfere with its response. If you shared payment or identity information
Payment or bank details
Contact your bank, card issuer, or payment provider through its official app, known phone number, or website. Report the disclosure and any transactions you do not recognize, and follow the institution’s instructions for protecting the account or card. Microsoft also advises reporting suspected fraudulent activity to your bank or credit-card company (Microsoft Learn).
Social Security or other identity information
If you disclosed a Social Security number or other identity information, use the FTC’s phishing guidance to reach IdentityTheft.gov and find steps based on the information exposed. Use official channels rather than links or phone numbers in the suspicious message.

Report and delete the phishing message
After addressing any exposed account or device, report the message through your email or messaging service, then delete it. The FTC’s current phishing instructions say to forward phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org, forward texts to SPAM (7726), and report scam attempts at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These reporting routes can change, so check the FTC page for the latest directions.
