If your cellular signal is weak indoors, Wi-Fi Calling can let your phone place and receive ordinary carrier calls over a working Wi-Fi connection. Your carrier must support it for your line and device. Connect to Wi-Fi, enable the setting using the steps below, and complete any emergency-address prompt.
Before you turn on Wi-Fi Calling
Make sure the phone is connected to Wi-Fi with internet access. Wi-Fi Calling also depends on carrier support; if the control is missing or activation fails, check with your carrier about eligibility for your line and device.

Enable Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- If your iPhone uses dual SIM, select the line you want to use.
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- Enter or confirm your emergency-services address if prompted.
When Wi-Fi Calling is available, Apple says “Wi-Fi” appears after the carrier name in the status bar. Availability depends on your carrier and may vary by country or region; menu wording can differ by software version. See Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling setup guide.
Enable Wi-Fi Calling on Android
Android phones using Google’s settings route
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet > SIMs > your carrier SIM > Wi-Fi calling.
- Turn on Wi-Fi calling and complete any prompts from your carrier.
If you do not see the setting, your carrier may not support Wi-Fi Calling for that phone or line. Android manufacturers and carriers can use different menu paths. Google’s instructions are at Google Phone app Help.

Google Fi on Android
- Open the Google Fi app.
- Tap your profile picture, then Phone settings > Wi-Fi calling.
- Turn on Wi-Fi calling and follow any prompts.
This is Google Fi’s documented route, not a general Android menu path. See Google Fi’s Wi-Fi calling instructions.
Check whether Wi-Fi Calling is active
On iPhone, look for “Wi-Fi” after the carrier name in the status bar. On Android, the notification screen may show “Internet Call” or “Wi-Fi calling” when the phone is connected to the internet. You can place a routine call to check that your own setup works; the indicator and call routing can vary by phone and carrier.

If Wi-Fi Calling is missing or calls still use cellular
- Confirm carrier support. Ask your provider whether Wi-Fi Calling is available for your specific line and device.
- Check the Wi-Fi connection. The phone needs an internet-connected Wi-Fi network; merely being connected to a router is not enough if that network has no internet access.
- Look for a different menu or carrier app. Android settings vary by manufacturer and carrier, and some providers offer their own activation route.
- Check call-routing behavior. Phones may select Wi-Fi or cellular according to carrier, device, signal, or preference. Google Pixel guidance describes routing based on preference or signal strength; details are not universal. See Google Pixel Help.
- Ask about charges and plan terms. Google warns that Wi-Fi calls may incur additional charges. Fees and terms depend on the provider, so confirm them with your carrier.
If Wi-Fi drops during a call, behavior depends on the carrier. Apple says an iPhone call may switch to cellular using VoLTE when available and enabled. Google Fi says it selects the network it considers best and can switch to cellular if Wi-Fi weakens or drops. Do not assume another carrier handles the transition the same way. Details are in Apple’s setup guide and Google Fi’s instructions.

Keep the emergency-services address associated with Wi-Fi Calling current. Apple says an iPhone uses cellular service for emergency calls when available; if cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi. A carrier may use the registered address to route emergency services. Apple also cautions that an iPhone connected to Wi-Fi Calling may not receive emergency alerts, and says traditional cellular or fixed-line service is preferable for emergency calls when available.
