Choose Resident Evil 5 for a focused two-player campaign
RE5 is the stronger starting point if you and a friend want the co-op campaign itself to be the main event. Its documented co-op options include split-screen on consoles and online play; on Steam PC, local split-screen was added in Capcom’s February 27, 2023 update, which also removed Games for Windows Live support. That update matters if you have seen older PC guides saying RE5 does not support local split-screen. That advice predates the change and should not be treated as current for the Steam version. For other releases, confirm the exact platform and edition before buying.

Choose Resident Evil 6 for variety and action excess

The trade-off is that RE6 is a more sprawling, chaotic action experience. That can be a draw if you and your partner enjoy a game that embraces spectacle; it is less compelling if your priority is a focused co-op campaign. PC Gamer writer Robert Zak, in an article updated March 4, 2026, offered a favorable personal take after playing with a human partner: “Resident Evil 6 turns into one of the most enjoyable co-op games I’ve played in recent memory.” PC Gamer That is one reviewer’s experience, not a consensus or a guarantee that every pair will enjoy the same things.

How to decide which one to play together
- Pick RE5 if you mainly want a focused two-player campaign and straightforward co-op choice.
- Pick RE6 if you welcome four connected story threads and a more chaotic action spectacle, and are comfortable with Ada’s campaign being single-player.
- Check your exact platform and edition before purchasing. The documented implementations are platform-specific; they do not establish feature parity across every release or region.
What to verify before buying for online co-op
Capcom’s manuals and the Steam listing document online co-op for both games, but that documentation does not establish whether matchmaking is active now, how easy it is to find a partner, or whether cross-play is available. Check the storefront and platform information for the precise edition you plan to use, and do not assume online service status from the game’s feature description alone.
