If Windows Update is interrupting your game, set Windows 11 Active hours to cover your usual play time. If an update is already waiting, schedule its restart for a break or pause updates temporarily. These settings reduce update-related interruptions; they do not permanently block updates or prevent every kind of restart.
Set Active hours around your gaming schedule
Active hours tell Windows when you are typically using your PC, helping it avoid restarting for updates during those hours. Microsoft documents both automatic and manual options in its Active hours guidance.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
- Choose Automatically if you want Windows to adjust the hours based on device activity, or choose Manually and enter a range that covers your regular gaming sessions.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check whether an update is already waiting for a restart.
Choose automatic or manual hours
- Automatic: Best if your play times vary and you want Windows to adapt to how you use the device.
- Manual: Best if you game at predictable times and want to define the hours yourself.
Active hours reduce the chance of an update restart while you are using the PC; they are not a guarantee that every restart will be blocked.
If an update is already waiting to restart
When Windows Update shows a restart is required, use its restart scheduling option to choose a more convenient time, such as a break between sessions. If you need to defer updates briefly, use the pause control on the Windows Update page. The available controls can vary with Windows version and device policy, so check what your PC currently offers.

Pausing is temporary, not a way to turn off updates permanently. Microsoft Support’s Windows Update: FAQ says: “You can’t stop updates entirely—because they help keep your device safe and secure, updates will eventually need to be installed and downloaded, regardless of your update settings.”
Do Not Disturb hides alerts, not restart behavior
If update notifications or other banners distract you during a game, you can configure Settings > System > Notifications > Turn on do not disturb automatically. Windows can turn on Do Not Disturb while you are playing a game or using a full-screen app. This suppresses notifications; it does not schedule or prevent a restart. Distinguish an update restart from a crash
If the PC restarts abruptly and Windows Update did not show a pending restart, Active hours may not address the cause. Note any stop code or error message on screen, then investigate the failure. Microsoft identifies hardware, drivers, and software among possible causes of unexpected restarts and stop-code errors; its troubleshooting guide provides next steps.

What to expect from Windows 11 updates
In a support article published August 14, 2026, Microsoft described a gradual rollout of a monthly combined restart for updates released on or after July 28, 2026. The change applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, combining driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security-update restart. Microsoft says some critical or emergency updates may still install as soon as available, and the feature may not yet be present on every device. Details are in its one-restart-a-month update note.

That note also describes pausing updates for up to 35 days under the rollout, but availability and policy can vary. Use the controls shown on your own Windows Update page rather than assuming the same pause period or update behavior on every PC.
