ChatGPT may show ads to eligible Free and Go users in regions where OpenAI is testing advertising. OpenAI says ads help support broader access to ChatGPT and continued product investment. Its published explanation says ad selection may use the current conversation’s context, the ad’s content and destination, advertiser-provided context hints and targeting choices, and—if personalization is enabled—selected signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience. These are OpenAI’s stated policies and descriptions, not an independent audit of how ads are delivered.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s Help Center says ads may appear for eligible Free and Go accounts in selected regions. It describes Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts as ad-free, and says accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 do not receive ads. Temporary Chats do not show ads, according to the same Help Center. Availability is a changing test, not a permanent country or plan guarantee. OpenAI’s current overview points to a separate availability page and says expansion is gradual.
OpenAI said the test began in the United States on February 9, 2026. In an August 11, 2026 announcement, it named the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea as markets where it had launched ads, while saying expansion would continue. That announcement is a dated list, not a complete live availability roster. OpenAI’s rollout announcement has the dated details.
How does ChatGPT decide which ads to show?
OpenAI describes ad selection as a relevance-based system that can combine conversational context with advertiser inputs. Mentioning a topic does not guarantee an ad, and not every conversation produces one. OpenAI’s advertiser documentation says context hints are guidance rather than exact-match keywords or a promise that an ad will appear. - Current conversation: OpenAI says the conversation’s context and intent may be considered when deciding whether an ad is relevant.
- The ad itself: The ad’s title, creative text, and landing page may be considered alongside the conversation.
- Advertiser inputs: Advertisers can provide context hints about conversations, topics, or keywords where their offering may be relevant, as well as targeting selections. These inputs guide matching but do not ensure delivery.
- Broader ChatGPT signals: If ad personalization is enabled, selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience may be used. OpenAI says these can include the current thread, interactions with ads, past chats, and memory.
OpenAI says relevance and outcomes guide selection, and that when multiple eligible ads compete, relevance and advertiser bids factor into ranking. Its advertiser documentation describes a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. That is a description of the ad system, not evidence that any specific ad was selected because of a single word or detail in a chat.
Does ChatGPT use conversations to target ads?
OpenAI says current-thread context may be used for ad selection, even when ad personalization is off. Turning personalization off instead prevents other chats, ad history, and topics from being used for that purpose, according to the company’s ad controls FAQ. OpenAI says it does not share conversations with advertisers and does not sell user data to them. It says advertisers receive aggregated performance reporting, such as ad views and clicks, rather than users’ chats or personal details. OpenAI lists chat history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address, and sensitive information among what advertisers do not receive. These are OpenAI’s stated privacy commitments, not a third-party verification.
If you choose to contact an advertiser through an ad, the messages you send directly to that advertiser are visible to it. OpenAI also says viewing, hiding, reporting, or clicking ads does not add those actions to ChatGPT memory. If you clear ads data, OpenAI says that data stops being used for ad selection and may remain on its servers for up to 30 days before removal; this retention statement concerns ads data, not general chat retention. How to control ads and personalization
OpenAI says controls are limited to Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or expected soon. Personalized ads are not initially available in the EEA or Switzerland, and regional settings can change. If the setting is available on your account, use these steps:
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Ad Controls.
- Turn ad personalization off to prevent use of other chats, ad history, or topics for ad selection. This does not remove current-thread context from consideration, according to OpenAI.
- Use the controls on an individual ad to dismiss or report it, or inspect why it was shown.
- Use the option to clear ads data if you want that data removed from ad-selection use.
Labels and availability may differ as the test expands. OpenAI’s FAQ on ads in ChatGPT describes the controls and their regional limits.

Are ads next to sensitive topics?
OpenAI says ads are not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated conversations, including discussions of personal health, mental health, and politics. Its ad policy also covers additional sensitive and brand-unsafe contexts. This is a placement restriction; it does not mean every advertiser in a regulated sector is categorically excluded. OpenAI says some regulated categories may be allowed for approved advertisers after manual, case-by-case review, while its initial test focuses primarily on consumer areas. Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers or count as recommendations?
OpenAI says ads are labeled as sponsored, appear separately from the response, and do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Its Help Center says advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter responses. A paid placement is not an endorsement by ChatGPT; assess the advertiser and its claims independently.
