Choose the right rollback method

If Windows starts, uninstall the recent update
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- Find the update that immediately preceded the problem, select Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC and check whether the issue is resolved.
This path is intended for a recent installed update, such as a quality update; it is not the same as returning to an earlier Windows version. Microsoft advises that if a recently installed update is causing errors or other issues, uninstalling it may resolve the problem. The uninstall option may not be offered for some updates. If Windows will not start, remove the update in WinRE
Windows Recovery Environment provides recovery tools when you cannot reach the desktop. If Windows does not enter recovery on its own, Microsoft’s recovery options explain ways to open WinRE, including interrupting startup or using recovery media. Avoid interrupting startup unless needed; follow the recovery instructions for your device.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the offered option matching the change: the latest quality update for a regular update, or the latest feature update for a version-related update, if that option is shown.
- Follow the prompts, then restart and test Windows.
Recovery screens and labels can vary by build. If BitLocker is enabled, have the recovery key ready: recovery tools may ask for it before continuing. If you cannot identify the update type from the available choices, do not guess; consult Microsoft’s update removal guidance.

If you upgraded Windows, use Go back
Use Go back when the problem followed an upgrade to a newer Windows version, not an ordinary monthly update. Open Settings > System > Recovery, then select Go back if the option is available and follow the prompts.
Microsoft says Go back is generally available for 10 days after an upgrade. That is not a guarantee the button will appear: the prior-version files, including windows.old and $windows.~bt, must still be present. Windows automatically deletes the previous version after 10 days, and manually deleting it removes the ability to go back. - Go back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes.
- Microsoft’s instructions say to remove user accounts added after the upgrade and to have the upgrade USB drive if one was used.
- If Go back is absent, the time window may have elapsed or the required previous-version files may no longer be available.
If rollback is unavailable or does not fix the problem
Try a restore point
System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point while leaving personal files alone. It is useful only if a suitable restore point exists. For supported Windows 11 24H2-or-later systems, Microsoft also lists point-in-time restore when a restore point is available; this returns the system, apps, settings, and files to the selected point, so changes made after that point are lost. Check Microsoft’s point-in-time restore guidance for eligibility and steps.
Use Safe Mode only to diagnose
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services. It can help determine whether startup behavior changes in a minimal environment, but it does not itself uninstall an update. Use the direct update-removal route when the update is the suspected cause. Microsoft describes Safe Mode under its Windows recovery options.

Reset or reinstall only after protecting your files
If the built-in rollback and restore options fail, Microsoft lists reset and reinstall media as further recovery routes. Back up important files first when possible: reinstalling Windows from installation media can remove everything. A USB flash drive for Windows recovery media may be useful for these fallback routes, but it is not needed for update removal in Settings or for Go back. Consult Microsoft’s recovery options before choosing a reset or reinstall path.
