The right mix depends on what you need the money for, where your studio is based, how quickly you need it, whether you can repay it, and how much ownership or control you are willing to share. Start by defining the next milestone and its cost—not by picking a funding source.
Start with the milestone you need to fund
A prototype, a vertical slice, full production, and studio growth are different funding problems. A small amount to test a concept may be manageable through savings or contract work; completing a game after a playable vertical slice may call for project finance, a grant, crowdfunding, or investment. A studio seeking to grow beyond one project may need a different business case again. Ukie’s 2025 finance guide recommends first working out where the business is and where it wants to go, then identifying what it needs money for.
Write a one-page funding brief before approaching anyone. Include:
- The amount you need and the date by which you need it.
- The milestone the money will pay for, with a clear definition of what “done” means.
- The planned use of funds and the runway it buys.
- Your country, region, business structure, and applicant type.
- What you can offer in return, such as repayment, revenue participation, equity, or delivery commitments.
- Your fallback plan if the funding is delayed, reduced, or unavailable.
Build the estimate from actual planned costs: team pay and contractors, overhead, software and hardware, QA, localization, legal and accounting work, marketing, platform costs, taxes, and contingency. Label assumptions rather than presenting estimates as guaranteed costs. Decide in advance what you will pause, reduce, or stop if the money does not arrive. Do not commit to a production scope on the basis of an unawarded grant, an unsigned investment, or hoped-for sales.

Compare funding routes by their obligations
Funding is not interchangeable: a grant, loan, revenue share, and equity investment have different costs and consequences. Compare offers on the cash timing, repayment or recoupment, ownership and IP, governance, eligibility, application workload, and the milestone the money actually covers.
| Route | May fit | Main trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Founder savings, part-time work, or contract work | Prototypes and extending runway while retaining outside ownership | Founders carry the financial exposure; progress may be slower, and paid work can compete with development time. Track monthly burn and set a stop point. |
| Grants and public funds | Projects and applicants that meet a particular program’s location and project criteria | Eligibility, deadlines, eligible costs, matching funds, competition, reporting, and payment timing vary by call. Verify the current rules with the awarding body. |
| Crowdfunding | A project with a public pitch and an audience willing to support it | Audience-building and campaign work take time; platform terms, fees, delivery and reward obligations, and legal or tax duties need to be understood before setting a target. |
| Bank or small-business loan | A business with a credible plan and a realistic source of repayment | Repayment, interest, security or guarantees, and cash-flow risk depend on the lender and jurisdiction. Expected game sales are not guaranteed repayment cash. |
| Angel or venture investment | A studio able to make a scalable business case and open to outside ownership or governance | Assess dilution, control, governance, investor expectations, and exit horizon. The existence of this funding category does not mean it fits a typical game project. |
| Project or specialist debt, tax incentives, or distribution advances | Studios that qualify under a provider’s underwriting or a jurisdiction’s rules | Check eligibility, timing, recoupment, and contract terms with the actual provider or relevant authority before counting on proceeds. |
| Revenue from a previous release or paid services | A studio that already has a product or service generating income | Timing and volume can be uncertain. Treat future sales as a forecast, not committed financing. |
Ask for proposed terms in writing. Look beyond the headline amount to repayment or recoupment, IP ownership, equity, governance, reporting, delivery milestones, and any ongoing marketing or administrative workload. The actual agreement—not the category label—determines the studio’s obligations. Get qualified local legal or accounting advice when needed.

Use founder income to extend runway carefully
Self-funding through savings, paid work, or contract projects can avoid an outside financing deal, but it is not free: founders take on financial risk and spend time they could otherwise put into the game. Decide how much personal money and time you can responsibly commit, track the studio’s monthly burn, and agree on a limit or review date before extending the runway.
In the Game Developers Conference’s 2025 survey, 82% of surveyed indie developers said they had put their own money into their games. The same survey reported publishing deals and project-based funding at 28%; government funds or grants, venture capital, and co-development contracts at 15% each; crowdfunding at 11%; and bank loans at 6%. These are reports from survey respondents, not rates for all indie studios, measures of success, or advice about what a particular team should choose.

Find grants that match your location and project
Public funding is local and conditional. Applicant type, location, project scope, cultural or industry criteria, eligible costs, matching funds, application dates, and payment schedules can all determine whether a grant is useful. Search national, regional, and city-level game, arts, and creative-industry funding bodies, then check the live call and rules before spending time on an application. Grants.gov advises U.S. applicants to check eligibility for the specific opportunity; eligibility may depend on that opportunity’s requirements and relevant size standards.
United States
Do not assume that a grant listed on Grants.gov is available to every game studio. Check the specific opportunity’s eligibility and requirements, including any relevant small-business size standards. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s general funding guidance also covers several routes, including self-funding, crowdfunding, venture capital, and loans; it does not make their terms universal outside the United States.

Spain
The Spain Ministry of Culture’s video-game and digital-creation aid page states a maximum of €80,000 per project, capped at 80% of the project budget. Under the stated rules, at least 20% must come from the applicant’s own funds or other public or private contributions; in-kind contributions do not count as external financing. The page lists self-employed people and SMEs with tax residence in Spain among eligible applicant categories. These are terms for that jurisdiction and program, not a general grant rule: consult the official call for its current dates and detailed conditions.
A separate ministry page described Spain’s 2025 call as supporting preproduction, production, and distribution, as well as incubation, mentoring, acceleration, professional events, and cultural exhibitions, subject to cultural, artistic, or creative-industry criteria. That description concerns the named 2025 call and should not be treated as an evergreen offer.

United Kingdom
A UK government announcement in 2025 described £28.5 million for video-game developers as part of a £30 million funding announcement. It establishes what was announced, not that the funding remains open or unspent. The government has also published an evaluation describing UK Games Fund strands and historical award structures; neither historical arrangements nor an announcement confirm that an application is currently open. Check the relevant fund for a live call before including a grant in your financing plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Treat crowdfunding as both finance and a delivery commitment
Crowdfunding can suit a game that has a clear public pitch and an audience likely to back it, but a campaign target is not the same as net development cash. Before setting a goal, test whether you can reach potential backers and estimate campaign preparation, fulfillment, platform fees, taxes, and contingencies using the current platform terms and rules for your location. The SBA cautions that platforms differ and advises users to understand their full financial and legal obligations. Do not promise rewards or delivery dates without accounting for the work and costs they create.
Borrow only against a credible repayment plan
A loan creates a repayment obligation whether or not the game sells as expected. Before approaching a lender, model repayment against conservative revenue assumptions and consider whether the business has another dependable source of cash. Ask about interest, repayment schedule, security, guarantees, and fees; these terms vary by lender and jurisdiction.
For U.S. small-business loan seekers, SBA guidance recommends preparing a business plan, an expense sheet, and five-year projections. Lenders elsewhere may require different materials, so confirm their requirements. Do not treat projected game sales as guaranteed cash flow.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose an order of operations
- Define the brief. State the amount, use, milestone, runway, location, applicant or company structure, and the form of repayment or return you are prepared to offer.
- Cost the milestone. Build a realistic plan for the team, overhead, tools, QA, localization, legal and accounting work, marketing, platform costs, taxes, and contingency. Mark uncertain figures as assumptions.
- Set the founder-funded limit. Decide whether contract or part-time work can cover some costs without jeopardizing delivery, and establish a monthly burn and stop or re-scope point.
- Check public programs. Search relevant national, regional, and local bodies. Verify applicant eligibility, eligible expenses, match requirements, application deadlines, and when funds are paid in the actual current call.
- Validate a crowdfunding plan. Assess audience interest and the work and cost of campaign delivery before choosing a target. Read the current platform terms and account for obligations rather than treating the target as usable cash.
- Prepare for debt if it fits. Assemble the business plan, expense sheet, and projections requested by the lender; U.S. SBA guidance recommends five-year projections for small-business loan seekers.
- Compare written offers. Check cash timing, repayment or recoupment, equity, IP, governance, reporting, and delivery obligations. Get qualified local advice on contracts and tax matters.
- Keep a fallback. Decide what scope can be reduced, delayed, or stopped if funding does not close. Do not start a production plan that only works if uncertain money arrives.
What success rates can you rely on?
The sources cited here do not establish a current, general success rate for indie game grants, Kickstarter campaigns, or publisher-free game launches. A success rate from a particular program or platform would not automatically predict another studio’s odds: eligibility, selection criteria, audience, project, and timing differ. Use the rules and evidence for the specific opportunity you are considering, rather than planning around an unsupported industry-wide percentage.
