Microsoft and Google offer useful platform-native reporting, but their dashboards cover different products and use different definitions; they are not neutral, like-for-like benchmarks.
Start with the tools and activity each platform can see
An analytics platform is only useful for decisions about the AI tools represented in its data. Map the applications employees use—including productivity-suite assistants, standalone enterprise chat products, and internally deployed agents—against each platform’s supported sources. Then ask whether it captures native product events or combines telemetry from several vendors.
Microsoft describes Copilot Analytics as a suite of Microsoft reporting surfaces: readiness and adoption in the Microsoft 365 admin center; the Microsoft Copilot Dashboard in Viva Insights; Agent and Consumption dashboards; Copilot Analytics reports; and Advanced Reporting through Viva Insights and preconfigured Power BI dashboards. Microsoft says readiness and adoption reporting can inform license rollout and assignment, while the Copilot Dashboard is intended to help assess usage and impact after deployment. Google documents two distinct reporting scopes. Workspace administrators can review Gemini usage in Workspace apps, while Gemini Enterprise has separate analytics for its app. Do not assume that a report for one product covers the other. Google also describes Work Insights as a separate way to examine broader Workspace adoption, rather than a universal AI analytics platform. A vendor-authored Temporall datasheet claims that its Tempo product can unify telemetry from Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, ChatGPT Enterprise, and Gemini Enterprise. Treat this as a claim to verify, not established comparative evidence: request proof of the specific integrations, event coverage, identity matching, implementation needs, and export paths for your environment. Compare definitions before comparing adoption numbers
A dashboard label such as “active user” does not guarantee that two products count the same behavior. For every headline metric, document its unit, event definition, time window, included apps or features, and exclusions. Confirm whether the denominator is people, eligible licenses, assigned licenses, or another population; a percentage is not interpretable without it.
- People versus activity: Is the value a count of unique users, sessions, prompts, accepted suggestions, messages, feature events, or active days?
- Time period: Is the report daily, a selected interval, or a rolling period? Are comparisons based on the same window?
- Scope: Which apps, features, agents, and user populations are included or excluded?
- Meaning of active: What action qualifies, and does passive availability or license assignment count?
Google Workspace defines active Gemini usage as a user asking Gemini to perform work or accepting a Gemini suggestion. Its reports include active users, eligible licenses, usage by organizational unit or group, app- and feature-level views, usage levels, and active days. Gemini Enterprise uses its own analytics definitions, including active users and 7-day and 28-day growth and churn, plus 28-day retention. Microsoft also documents product-specific adoption trends at app and feature level and operational agent measures such as billing, usage and spend rates, and agent performance success rates. Separate adoption diagnosis from business impact
Usage answers whether employees are engaging with a tool; it does not, by itself, prove saved time, improved quality, lower cost, or revenue impact. Microsoft distinguishes readiness and adoption reporting from impact insights. Gemini Enterprise analytics includes a “Value” metric group, but a label alone does not establish how value is calculated or whether its assumptions fit your workflows.
Before selecting a platform, ask for the calculation behind every claimed outcome: the baseline, attribution method, assumptions, time period, and whether the result is measured directly or estimated. Then determine whether your team can connect product activity to organization-defined outcomes, such as cycle time or service quality, without presenting correlation as causation. If a platform only reports usage, treat it as adoption monitoring rather than outcome measurement.

Check whether the data can answer operational questions
Useful analytics should help leaders decide where to target training, support, rollout, or governance—not just display totals. Compare the granularity available and the actions the data can support.
- Segmentation: Can administrators filter by organizational unit, group, job function, application, feature, or agent? Are group changes reflected promptly?
- Diagnosis: Can reports reveal low-use teams or features, or identify where users may need guidance?
- Analysis and portability: Can data be filtered, exported, accessed through an API, or used in custom reports? Can it be joined to HR, workflow, or outcome data under your rules?
- Data quality: Are missing, unlinked, or excluded records explained, and can you trace a displayed metric back to its source definition?
Google Workspace reports document exports and views by organizational unit or group, as well as per-app and per-feature usage. Confirm that the filters and exports available in your edition are sufficient for the decisions you intend to make; a report’s tab names do not establish that it supports every desired analysis. Evaluate access, privacy, and eligibility together
Reporting access is shaped by licensing, permissions, settings, and aggregation—not just the product name. Ask who can see organization-wide, group-level, and user-level information; what setup is needed; and whether the reporting surface is included for your tenant and region.

Microsoft documents Copilot Dashboard availability for business or enterprise Microsoft 365 or Office 365 customers with an active Exchange Online account. Some access and grouping features also depend on Viva Insights licensing and permissions, so verify the requirements for the specific dashboard and tenant. Microsoft notes that disabling optional diagnostic data does not necessarily remove all usage metrics because some measures use required diagnostic data; its metric documentation also identifies exclusions for specific Copilot Chat metrics. For Gemini Enterprise, Google says user-level analytics require allowlisting. Confirm who can be allowlisted, which fields that enables, and how access fits your organization’s privacy controls. Check current edition, license eligibility, permissions, and regional availability directly in the relevant product documentation and with the vendor before procurement.

Freshness affects whether a dashboard is suitable for day-to-day monitoring or only for periodic review. Google says Workspace Gemini reports may take two to three days to show the latest activity. Organizational structure updates can take up to 72 hours to appear, and historical data before organizational changes is not included. Google says Gemini Enterprise analytics refresh about every six hours. Some app metrics depend on a linked data store, and some search analytics are in Public Preview for US and EU multi-region apps. Use a consistent evaluation process
- List the tools and decisions. Inventory AI products, agents, user groups, and the rollout, training, governance, or outcome decisions analytics must inform.
- Request metric definitions. For each required measure, record its event, unit, denominator, time window, included features, exclusions, and calculation method.
- Test real segmentation and access. Confirm the exact administrator roles, user-level controls, license prerequisites, and group filters in the relevant tenant or product edition.
- Validate freshness and portability. Check refresh intervals, organizational-change handling, export formats, APIs or custom reporting, and any linked-data requirements.
- Match the evidence to the decision. Keep adoption metrics separate from outcome claims, and confirm whether organization-defined KPIs can be joined to activity data.
- Verify commercial scope. Confirm current edition, included reporting, separately licensed features, regional availability, and eligibility with the vendor before choosing.
There is no independent platform ranking established by the product documentation discussed here. Choose based on verified coverage and whether definitions, access controls, refresh behavior, and analysis capabilities support your organization’s actual decisions.
