If you want a PS5 game with Dune: Awakening’s mix of survival, crafting, and base building, start with Grounded, Conan Exiles, and Rust Console Edition. They share parts of that loop, but each changes the setting and the kind of danger you face: backyard creatures, a harsh fantasy wilderness, or other players in an exposed online world. Choose by the feature you want most rather than expecting a one-to-one substitute.
What makes Dune: Awakening the comparison point?
PlayStation describes Dune: Awakening as an open-world survival game that combines adventure and RPG gameplay. Its advertised features include exploration, crafting, combat, base construction, and a cinematic story on Arrakis. The setting also shapes survival: players contend with the planet’s climate, seek shade, process water, follow faction stories, and travel using vehicles such as an ornithopter. These are the game’s described features, not a comparative hands-on assessment. PlayStation’s Dune: Awakening product page lists a PS5 edition and describes its modes.
That combination gives you several ways to choose an alternative: look for resource management and crafting, a reason to build and defend a base, a similar level of exposure to other players, or simply a survival game with a setting you prefer. The games below overlap with different parts of that mix; none is established as the closest match across every dimension.
Best PS5 survival games to consider
| Game | What PlayStation highlights | Best fit if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Grounded | Survival in a backyard-scale world, with creatures, threats to your base, customization, mutations, and upgradable weapons. | A distinctive small-scale setting and survival where base defense matters. |
| Conan Exiles | Multiplayer survival in a harsh environment, including hunting, crafting, cooking, combat, and base building. | Harsh-environment survival and construction in a fantasy world. |
| Rust Console Edition | Online survival in which other players can threaten your livelihood; shelters, scavenging, equipment, and alliances are part of the experience. | A more exposed online sandbox where player interaction is a central risk. |
These descriptions come from PlayStation’s survival-game guide, which names all three among its recommendations. The guide also contains outdated future-release wording about Dune: Awakening; use it for the game descriptions, not for the game’s release status.

Grounded: backyard survival and base threats
Grounded makes the scale of the world its defining contrast with Arrakis: survival unfolds in a backyard among creatures, rather than across a science-fiction desert. PlayStation’s description also calls out base threats, customization, mutations, and weapons you can upgrade. It is the most relevant pick here if you want survival and construction, but would enjoy a sharply different setting and creature-focused dangers.
Conan Exiles: survival and building in a harsh fantasy world
Conan Exiles overlaps with Dune: Awakening on environmental hardship and the practical survival loop. PlayStation highlights hunting, crafting, cooking, combat, and base building in a harsh environment. Its fantasy setting makes it a different kind of world from Arrakis, so consider it for the survival-and-construction activities rather than for a sci-fi story or desert technology.

Rust Console Edition: survival with other players as a threat
Rust Console Edition puts the social risk up front: PlayStation describes an online survival game where other players can threaten your livelihood. Its listed activities include scavenging, building shelters, gathering equipment, and making alliances. Choose it if the tension of an exposed online world is more appealing than a primarily environmental survival challenge. Its emphasis is meaningfully different from Dune: Awakening’s advertised story and setting.
How to choose between them
- Prioritize crafting and survival activities: Compare the listed loops. Grounded and Conan Exiles both foreground survival and construction, while Rust Console Edition adds the explicit risk of other players.
- Prioritize base building: All three descriptions include building-related appeal, but Grounded specifically highlights threats to a base; Conan Exiles lists base building as part of its survival activities.
- Prioritize social exposure: Rust Console Edition is the clearest fit if other players being a threat is part of the draw. Don’t assume the games provide identical solo, co-op, or server options based on these broad descriptions.
- Prioritize atmosphere: The choices diverge: backyard-scale creatures in Grounded, fantasy wilderness in Conan Exiles, or a harsher online sandbox in Rust Console Edition. None reproduces Arrakis’s sci-fi setting, faction stories, or vehicles.
Check PS5 compatibility and online requirements before buying
PlayStation’s US product page identifies Dune: Awakening as a PS5 Standard Edition and PS5 Pro Enhanced title. It says PS Plus is required for online play, but explicitly says PS Plus is not required for single-player. Its mode and service labels should be read together: the subscription requirement applies to online play, not the listed single-player option. The page also describes shared-server multiplayer and public-server play. Check the product page for the current listing.

For the three alternatives, the PlayStation survival guide provides descriptions but does not establish each game’s current PS5 edition or online-service requirements. Before purchasing, check the exact regional PlayStation Store listing for the edition, platform compatibility, and whether the mode you intend to play requires PS Plus. Requirements and availability can differ by edition or region, so do not infer them from genre or another game’s listing.
Funcom’s July 2, 2026 announcement said the PS5 version of Dune: Awakening would include a full single-player mode and configurable difficulty and gameplay options. Chief Marketing Officer Erling Ellingsen described the approach as “Not less challenging, but less challenging to learn.” Those are the developer’s statements about the design, not independent judgments of how accessible the game is.
