The usual distinction is their shape: stick insects are long and twig-like, while leaf insects are broad and flattened. Both eat plants and rely on camouflage, but their care depends on the exact species—not just its common name. Identify the species and confirm its food plant, enclosure, temperature, humidity, and handling needs before bringing one home.
What is the difference between stick insects and leaf insects?
The names describe common body forms rather than separate insect orders. Typical stick insects have narrow, elongated bodies that resemble twigs or stems. Typical leaf insects have wider, flatter bodies that resemble leaves, sometimes with irregular edges that look damaged. Color alone is not a reliable way to tell them apart.
Both belong to Phasmatodea. True leaf insects are associated with the family Phylliidae, but common names are not always used consistently. When researching care or identifying an animal, use its scientific name if available. The Amateur Entomologists’ Society describes both forms within Phasmatodea (AES overview); the Royal Entomological Society also discusses phasmids as a group (Royal Entomological Society).
How their life cycle and camouflage are alike
Both groups are plant-eating camouflage specialists. Phasmids undergo incomplete metamorphosis: young insects, called nymphs, generally resemble smaller versions of adults rather than passing through a pupal stage. Wings may develop at the final moult in species that have them; not all species are winged.

Reproduction also varies by species. Some phasmids can produce offspring from unfertilized eggs, while others need males and females. Egg placement and incubation time differ substantially: the AES says some stick insect eggs may take two months to a year to hatch, while the Australian Museum reports that Extatosoma tiaratum eggs may hatch after one to three years underground. Do not assume a hatch date or breeding method from the broad label “stick insect” or “leaf insect.”
Care differences at a glance
| Care factor | Typical stick insect | Typical leaf insect | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body and camouflage | Long, narrow, twig- or stem-like | Broad, flattened, leaf-like | Identify by species, not color or common name alone. |
| Enclosure | Needs room to hang freely during moulting; AES gives a height guideline of three times adult length. | AES recommends a minimum height of 30 cm and describes ventilated net cages; it warns that condensation can build up in non-netted housing. | These are AES care-sheet recommendations, not universal standards. Match height and ventilation to the species and adult size. |
| Food | Bramble is accepted by many species; some take oak or hawthorn, while others need different plants. | AES names bramble and oak as food options. | Verify the host plant for the exact species and use foliage free of pesticide treatment. |
| Temperature and humidity | Varies widely. AES says many species are most comfortable around 25°C, while some tolerate ordinary home temperatures. | Requirements vary; the cited AES leaf-insect sheet does not establish one temperature or humidity recipe for all species. | Do not apply a figure from one species to another. |
| Handling | Some are sturdy; others are fragile or may pinch, bite, or spray defensive chemicals. | AES warns that legs can be lost easily and recommends gentle, minimal handling. | Check species-specific risks and avoid unnecessary contact. |
How to choose and set up an enclosure
Provide room to moult
Phasmids need enough vertical space to hang while shedding their skins. If a moulting insect cannot hang freely, the shed may be disrupted. The AES stick insect care sheet suggests enclosure height of three times the insect’s adult length. Its leaf insect sheet recommends a minimum height of 30 cm. Treat both as starting guidance from those sheets, not a guarantee that one size suits every species. Check expected adult size and species-specific care before choosing an enclosure.

Balance ventilation and humidity
Use an enclosure that provides appropriate airflow without drying out a species that needs higher humidity. The AES describes ventilated net cages for leaf insects and cautions that condensation can build up in non-netted housing. Its stick insect guide contrasts species suited to open cages with species requiring nearly closed housing and about 80% relative humidity. That humidity figure applies to the species described in the guide, not phasmids generally. Follow the requirements for the scientific name you are keeping.
What do stick insects and leaf insects eat?
They are herbivores, but “leaves” is not a sufficient diet plan: different species use different host plants. The AES says many stick insects accept bramble (blackberry), with some also eating oak or hawthorn; fern-feeding species need ferns. For leaf insects, the AES names bramble and oak and recommends lightly misting leaves every couple of days. Keep pesticide-treated foliage away from the enclosure.

Australian phasmids illustrate why checking the species matters. The Australian Museum notes that many use eucalypts or wattles, while Megacrania batesi specializes in Pandanus tectorius. Bramble may be convenient for some captive species, but it is not a universal substitute for a known host plant. The AES care sheets provide group-specific examples for stick insects and leaf insects; the Australian Museum discusses Australian species and their food plants in its stick insect care guide.
Temperature, humidity, and handling depend on species
Do not use a group-wide temperature setting
The AES says many stick insects are most comfortable at about 25°C, but Carausius morosus and some relatives tolerate ordinary household temperatures of 17°C or higher. These examples do not establish a safe range for every stick or leaf insect. Check the named species’ care instructions and avoid making a habitat hotter or more humid simply because another phasmid needs it.

Handle gently and only when needed
Handling tolerance differs. The AES notes that some stick insects are sturdy, while fragile species may be injured easily; some can pinch or bite, and others use defensive chemical sprays. Its leaf insect sheet recommends coaxing an insect gently onto a hand and minimizing handling because legs can be lost. Do not pick an insect up by a leg or assume a calm appearance means it is safe to handle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Eggs, breeding, and lifespan
Some phasmids reproduce parthenogenetically, producing offspring from unfertilized eggs; other species require both sexes. Eggs may be dropped, buried, or attached to surfaces, depending on the species. Incubation can range from months to years in the examples above, so do not discard eggs simply because they have not hatched quickly.

The AES fact file gives an average lifespan of 12 months for stick and leaf insects and notes that captive individuals can live longer. This is a broad summary, not a lifespan guarantee for any particular species. The Australian Museum’s overview of the group was updated on 22 August 2024 (Australian Museum overview).
Quick Recap
Before obtaining a phasmid
- Get the scientific name, not only a label such as “stick insect” or “leaf insect.”
- Confirm the correct host plant and make sure you can provide it consistently without pesticide exposure.
- Check adult size, required enclosure height, ventilation, temperature, and humidity for that species.
- Learn whether the species is fragile, has defensive behavior, or can reproduce without a mate.
- Check local rules before obtaining or moving a live insect. The sources cited here do not establish possession or release rules for every jurisdiction; never release a captive phasmid without confirming that it is lawful and safe.
