Choose an AI inference platform by matching it to your workload, security requirements, and operating capacity—then benchmark the finalists against the same traffic pattern and service objectives. There is no universally best option established by the available provider and project documentation. The first decision is usually whether you want a managed endpoint service or are prepared to operate the serving stack yourself.
What counts as an inference platform?
A production inference platform is more than the engine that loads a model. It includes the systems that expose and manage predictions: endpoints and APIs, scheduling and routing, scaling, model artifacts, observability, validation, and security. A fast engine can still be a poor production fit if the surrounding deployment, monitoring, or incident-response work exceeds what your team can support.
Start by separating the serving engine from the operating model. A managed service can take on parts of endpoint operation; a self-managed deployment gives your team more direct control, but also makes your team responsible for the infrastructure and its lifecycle.
Should you use a managed endpoint or self-host?
Make this choice based on who will own deployment and operations, not on a blanket assumption that one approach is always cheaper or faster.

| Approach | What it means | Best fit when | Costs and responsibilities to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed endpoint service | A cloud provider offers an endpoint path with some combination of serving, scaling, security, and monitoring features. Exact capabilities depend on the service, endpoint type, configuration, and region. | You want to reduce infrastructure operations or your deployment already fits the provider’s environment and controls. | Compute and networking charges, configuration limits, scaling behavior, identity and network fit, logging, and provider-specific operational controls. |
| Self-managed serving | Your team deploys and operates the serving engine and the infrastructure around it. NVIDIA Triton supports multiple frameworks and CPU/GPU or other targets; vLLM documentation provides a Kubernetes deployment path for its serving engine. | You have the skills and capacity to manage Kubernetes or equivalent serving infrastructure and need the deployment path that provides. | Engineering and on-call effort, hardware and capacity planning, upgrades, integration, observability, and support arrangements. |
Do not compare a managed endpoint’s bill with self-hosted compute alone. Include the engineering and operational work on both sides; the cost comparison is meaningful only when the candidates deliver the same workload at the same service level.
Define the workload and service objectives before testing
A benchmark is only useful if it resembles the production traffic you need to serve. Record the following before shortlisting platforms:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Model and serving path: model size, framework or backend, and any serving-engine or software versions that affect execution.
- Request pattern: input and expected output sizes, prompt and response distributions, synchronous versus streaming requests, and whether the workload is online or batch-oriented.
- Traffic shape: typical and peak request rates, concurrency, burst duration, and expected growth.
- Deployment geography: required regions and where the users, data, and dependent systems are located.
- Service objectives: latency percentiles, throughput, availability, error budget, and the maximum acceptable delay before additional capacity is ready.
For language-model workloads, average request latency alone can hide a poor user experience. Measure time to first token and inter-token latency alongside request latency and output throughput. A streaming product may care about how quickly the first token appears and whether subsequent tokens arrive smoothly; another service may prioritize completed requests per second.
Apply security and operations requirements as hard filters
Before performance testing, rule out candidates that cannot meet your deployment requirements. Endpoint security and networking capabilities vary by service, endpoint type, and configuration, so verify the exact option you intend to deploy rather than relying on a product’s general feature list.

- Confirm identity and authentication, who can invoke or administer the endpoint, and how access is granted.
- Check network boundaries and private connectivity requirements, including how the endpoint communicates with dependent systems.
- Verify the available region and whether the deployment meets your data-handling and applicable policy requirements.
- Establish what is logged, which metrics are available, and how monitoring data is accessed and retained.
- Assign ownership for upgrades, validation, rollout and rollback, incident response, and support escalation.
For a managed service, verify which controls are provider-managed and which remain your responsibility. For a self-managed stack, account for the full set of infrastructure and serving components your team must operate.

How to run a fair platform comparison
Use one test plan and keep the workload and service objective consistent across candidates. Record differences in platform configuration so a result can be reproduced and interpreted.
- Write down the workload. Specify model, request and response distributions, traffic peaks, concurrency, request mode, and deployment geography.
- Set acceptance thresholds. Define the latency percentiles, throughput, availability, error budget, and scale-up delay you will accept. For LLMs, include time to first token and inter-token latency.
- Filter on constraints. Remove candidates that cannot meet required identity, network, region, logging, data-handling, or operational requirements.
- Record each test configuration. Capture platform and endpoint type, region, model, hardware, serving backend, software versions, and relevant settings for every run.
- Replay representative traffic. Use the same request distribution, concurrency, and test duration for each candidate. Include normal and peak conditions rather than testing only a quiet, steady state.
- Collect the right measures. NVIDIA’s reference-architecture guidance identifies time to first token, inter-token latency, request latency, output throughput, concurrency, error rate, model size, prompt and output distributions, backend, GPU type, and software versions as serving-test details to record.
- Test failure and recovery paths. Exercise overload behavior, retries, scaling, rollout and rollback, observability, and support escalation before committing to production.
Do not treat a result from a different model, hardware type, backend, software version, request mix, or concurrency as a direct prediction of your own production performance.

Compare total cost at the service level you measured
Estimate cost for the same workload and service objective used in the benchmark. Include compute and networking, storage where applicable, idle capacity, capacity reserved for peaks or scale-up delay, and the engineering and operations needed to run the service. A configuration that meets latency targets only with substantial spare capacity should be priced with that capacity included.
Managed endpoint pricing depends on current rates, location, configuration, and usage. Microsoft documents compute and networking charges for managed online endpoints; AWS recommends using metrics to evaluate instance-family price-performance. Use the provider’s current pricing and your measured usage to build the estimate rather than relying on a generic break-even claim.
