NOAA’s Kp breakdown lists 5.00 for 03:00–06:00 UTC and 5.67 for 09:00–12:00 UTC on October 9. Those are forecast intervals in UTC, not guarantees of when local effects will begin or peak.

What does a G2 geomagnetic storm mean?
NOAA classifies G2 as “Moderate” and associates it with Kp=6 on the NOAA Space Weather Scales. The forecast maximum of 5.67 is within the G2 range; it is not the same as a promise that every place or system will experience the scale’s listed effects.

NOAA says a G2 event can be associated with possible high-latitude power-system voltage alarms, spacecraft orientation corrections and drag-related changes to orbit predictions, and high-latitude HF radio fading. These are potential impacts, not certain outcomes for this forecast. NOAA also describes aurora visibility as potentially reaching New York and Idaho at typically 55° geomagnetic latitude. That scale example is not an event-specific visibility map or a guarantee for either state. Details are on NOAA’s Space Weather Scales.
Can I see the northern lights on October 9?
The G2 forecast alone cannot answer whether aurora will be visible from your location. Storm intensity and local visibility are different questions: darkness, local viewing conditions, and where aurora is occurring matter. Aurora cannot be seen in daylight.

Check NOAA’s 30-minute Aurora Forecast close to the time you plan to look. The product provides a near-term view of aurora location and intensity with roughly 30–90 minutes of lead time. NOAA notes that bright aurora may sometimes be observed as far as 1,000 km away when conditions are right; this is a possibility, not a viewing-distance guarantee.

NOAA’s 3-Day Forecast also gives a 10% probability of an S1-or-greater solar radiation storm and a 45% probability of R1–R2 radio blackouts on October 9.
