Compare tariffs using your household’s expected annual cost—not just the headline unit rate—and check the contract, meter and payment terms before switching. The right option depends on your postcode, gas and electricity use, meter setup and whether you prefer rate certainty or flexibility. A better-fitting tariff may be available from your current supplier, so compare the deal before deciding whether to move.

What to gather before comparing tariffs

Use a recent bill or your supplier account to find the details a meaningful comparison needs. Ofgem says you may be asked for your postcode, current supplier and tariff, unit costs and annual energy use. Record gas and electricity separately, because rates and standing charges can differ by fuel.

  • Your postcode and current supplier.
  • Annual electricity and gas use in kWh, rather than only your estimated monthly payment.
  • Each fuel’s unit rate and daily standing charge.
  • Your tariff type, contract end date and any exit fee.
  • Your meter type, payment method and any Economy 7 or other time-of-use setup.

Compare the annual cost estimate for your actual consumption. For a single-rate tariff, a useful calculation is: (annual kWh × unit rate) + (365 × daily standing charge), calculated separately for each fuel. Add the fuel totals, then account for applicable discounts or other tariff terms. This is an estimate for comparing offers, not a guarantee of your future bill.

A low unit rate can be offset by a high standing charge, particularly in a low-use home. Compare dual-fuel offers with separate gas and electricity suppliers too: bundling may be simpler, but it is not automatically cheaper. For a multi-rate tariff, apply each rate to the electricity you expect to use in its relevant period; do not treat peak and off-peak electricity as one rate.

How to compare the whole tariff

Check that each offer is based on the same postcode, annual usage, payment method and meter arrangement. Then compare the terms that can change its real cost or suitability.

  • Unit rates and standing charges: Compare both for each fuel. Check whether the quoted rate applies to your payment method and meter.
  • Fixed or variable rates: A fixed tariff holds the agreed unit rates and standing charges for its term; it does not fix the total bill, which still depends on use. A variable tariff can change. A fix may help with budgeting, but could cost more than a later variable deal if rates fall.
  • Term and exit fees: Note the contract length and any fee for leaving early. Compare the likely saving over the time you expect to stay against the fee.
  • Payment and meter conditions: Check eligibility for direct debit, standard credit or prepayment, and whether a credit check or deposit applies. If you have a smart meter, ask whether it will remain in smart mode with the new supplier.
  • Time-of-use rates: Check the exact peak and off-peak windows and whether you can shift enough electricity use to make the arrangement worthwhile. An overnight rate may suit an EV or storage-heater household only if its schedule and rates match how the home uses energy.
  • Specialist needs: Check eligibility and terms for EV, heat-pump, green or renewable tariffs. If you generate electricity, compare export arrangements separately.
  • Service: If you are switching because of poor service, compare supplier complaints and contact performance as well as price. Ofgem points consumers to Citizens Advice’s supplier service comparisons.

Comparison sites may show different suppliers and tariffs. Check more than one service and the supplier’s own offer where useful, and look carefully at how paid placements or partner rankings are presented. Ofgem’s guidance is to compare tariffs first: the best option may be with your current supplier.

Should you switch to a fixed tariff?

A fixed tariff is mainly a choice about rate certainty, not a promise of an unchanged bill. Your unit rates and standing charges are fixed for the agreed term, while your total still rises or falls with your usage. You may pay more than on a variable tariff if market rates fall; in return, you have more certainty about the rates charged during the contract.

Compare the fixed offer’s full annual cost with your current tariff and check its duration and exit terms. There is no universally best choice: a household that values predictable rates may prefer a fix, while another may prefer flexibility. No future price movement can be assumed from the tariff comparison alone. Citizens Advice explains how to weigh tariff types and standing charges.

Check the exit fee and timing in Great Britain

In England, Scotland and Wales, Citizens Advice says that if 49 days or fewer remain on a fixed contract, you can switch without paying an exit fee. If 50 days or more remain, a fee might apply. Check the specific contract with your supplier before applying; the amount can affect whether the expected savings are worthwhile.

Record the end date and fee for each fuel, since contract terms may differ. Ofgem’s switching guidance also advises checking cancellation terms. These Great Britain rules should not be assumed to apply in Northern Ireland.

How to switch in Great Britain

  1. Check your current deal. Find the tariff, end date, annual use, unit rates, standing charges and exit fee on your bill or online account.
  2. Compare your current supplier’s alternatives with other offers. You do not need to change supplier if your existing company has a tariff that better suits you.
  3. Confirm compatibility. Ask whether the offer supports your meter, payment method and any prepayment or multi-rate arrangement. Confirm the effect on smart-meter mode.
  4. Review the full terms. Check the contract and calculate likely savings after any applicable exit fee.
  5. Apply with the chosen supplier or a comparison service. In Great Britain, the new supplier normally contacts your old one; you do not need to contact the old supplier to start the switch.
  6. Use the cooling-off period if needed. A 14-day cooling-off period applies after agreeing the new contract. If you ask to switch as soon as possible, Citizens Advice says the switch should complete within five working days, subject to its start-time rule. If you want the move to coincide with a fixed deal’s end date, ask the new supplier to arrange a specific date.
  7. Submit a meter reading on switch day. Keep a record, pay the old supplier’s final bill and check that any account credit is returned. Citizens Advice says the final bill should arrive within six weeks and account credit should be refunded within ten working days after that bill is sent.

For the full process and circumstances that can affect a move, see Citizens Advice’s switching guidance.

Northern Ireland has a separate comparison and switching route

Do not apply the Great Britain Ofgem price cap or the Great Britain switching timeline to Northern Ireland. The cap covers default tariffs in England, Scotland and Wales, not Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland has its own regulator and supplier arrangements; use the Utility Regulator’s comparison guidance and the Consumer Council comparison tool. Gas supplier choice depends on where you live: the Utility Regulator identifies the Greater Belfast area for gas supplier choice.

Use the price cap as context, not a personal bill estimate

For Great Britain, Ofgem’s price cap regulates unit rates and standing charges for default standard variable tariffs; it is not a cap on an individual household’s total bill. For 1 October to 31 December 2026, Ofgem’s average-use benchmark for a Direct Debit dual-fuel household in England, Scotland and Wales is £1,723 per year. Ofgem lists typical rates for that period as electricity at 26.32p/kWh and a 54.83p daily standing charge, and gas at 7.97p/kWh and a 29.68p daily standing charge.

These are dated benchmark figures, not a quote for your home: rates vary by region and payment method, and your total depends on consumption. Ofgem notes that displayed prices include 5% VAT on gas and no VAT on electricity from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, so these figures are not directly comparable with earlier periods. Check Ofgem’s current price-cap rates and standing charges for the relevant period.

Quick checklist before you commit

  • Use actual annual gas and electricity consumption and the correct postcode.
  • Compare unit rates, standing charges and annual estimated cost for each fuel.
  • For time-of-use electricity, check the rate windows against your likely usage.
  • Check the term, end date, exit fee, payment method and meter compatibility.
  • Compare service and specialist tariff terms if they matter to your household.
  • Check more than one comparison source and your current supplier’s offers.
  • Use the correct switching guidance for Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
