It depends on which versions and transfer route you mean. On the original Game Boy Advance games, Pokémon moved from Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon LeafGreen to a Nintendo DS game through Pal Park cannot go back to the GBA cartridge. For the Switch rereleases, Nintendo confirms a transfer route to Pokémon HOME, but its FAQ does not establish whether those Pokémon can return to the rerelease.
Original GBA games: Pal Park migration is one-way
If you migrated a Pokémon from a GBA copy of FireRed or LeafGreen into Pokémon Platinum through Pal Park, it cannot return to its original cartridge. Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum instruction booklet says migrated Pokémon disappear from the original GBA game and “will never be able to go back.” This is a migration, not a reversible trade.
How the original route worked
The documented method required a Nintendo DS with a GBA Game Pak slot and a compatible GBA game. From the Platinum start menu, the player selected “Migrate From,” then went to Pal Park to catch the migrated Pokémon. The National Pokédex was required. Nintendo’s manual also set a limit of six Pokémon per GBA Game Pak per 24 hours; Pokémon holding Mail or knowing a hidden move could not be migrated.
Switch rereleases: HOME returnability is not confirmed
Nintendo’s Switch rerelease FAQ says players will be able to transfer Pokémon from FireRed and LeafGreen to Pokémon HOME. That confirms an outbound route, but the FAQ does not say whether a Pokémon transferred from either Switch game can be sent back. Do not assume the original GBA/Pal Park restriction answers this different route.
#1 Best Overall
If the Pokémon matters to you, verify the current instructions for the exact Switch game and read the transfer confirmation carefully before proceeding. The official FAQ cited here does not establish whether the feature is currently live or whether it permits a return transfer.
How the transfer routes differ
| Route | What Nintendo documents | Can it return? |
|---|---|---|
| GBA FireRed/LeafGreen to Pokémon Platinum via Pal Park | Eligible GBA source games and the DS migration procedure. | No. Nintendo says the Pokémon disappear from the GBA game and cannot go back. Pokémon Platinum manual |
| Switch FireRed/LeafGreen to Pokémon HOME | The FAQ confirms planned HOME transfer support. | Not established by the FAQ. Nintendo Switch FAQ |
| Pokémon Bank to Pokémon HOME | Nintendo says the move requires HOME Premium and that sent Pokémon cannot return to Bank or be used with Nintendo 3DS titles. | No return to Bank or 3DS titles; this does not establish how Switch FireRed/LeafGreen transfers work. Pokémon Bank and HOME support |
Local Switch trades are a separate operation
The Switch versions support local trading through the Wireless Club using built-in local wireless, while online play is unsupported, according to Nintendo’s FAQ. These are ordinary in-game trades between players, not evidence that a Pokémon moved to HOME can be brought back.

What to check before transferring
- Identify whether your copy is the original GBA game or the Switch rerelease.
- Identify the destination: Pal Park, Pokémon HOME, or another game. A rule documented for one route should not be applied automatically to another.
- For a GBA-to-Pal Park migration, assume the move is permanent: Nintendo explicitly says the Pokémon cannot return.
- For a Switch-to-HOME move, check Nintendo’s current game-specific instructions and the confirmation screen; the cited FAQ confirms the outbound route but not returnability.
