If a MagSafe 3 cable will not charge your MacBook, first check the outlet, adapter, cable connections, and charging status before replacing anything. A repeatedly flashing amber light signals a possible charging issue; a steady amber light can simply mean the battery is charging or charging is on hold. These checks help narrow down whether the problem is the cable, power source, adapter, Mac, or a normal battery setting.
Confirm that your Mac and cable use MagSafe 3
MagSafe 3 uses a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable connected to a USB-C power adapter. MagSafe and MagSafe 2 adapters are not interchangeable with MagSafe 3. Apple lists MagSafe 3 on MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, except the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro introduced in 2022, and MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later. If your Mac has no MagSafe 3 port, use a charging method supported by that model.
Check that the adapter is suitable for your exact Mac model. A connector that fits does not establish that the adapter supplies the recommended power. Apple’s Mac power-adapter guidance explains model-specific recommendations. To check the adapter connected to your Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > About, then click System Report and select Power; look for the AC Charger Information section and its wattage details. Labels may vary by macOS version.
What does the MagSafe 3 light mean?
- Steady amber: The Mac is charging or charging is on hold; amber alone does not mean the cable has failed.
- Green: The battery is fully charged.
- Repeated flashing amber: Apple says this may indicate a charging issue. Disconnect and inspect the charging setup, then follow the steps below.
macOS may also report “Charging On Hold,” a charge limit, or “Slow Charger.” Optimized Battery Charging or a selected charge limit can pause charging before the battery reaches 100%. “Slow Charger” means the connected charging solution is delivering less power than Apple recommends for that Mac.

Try these checks in order
1. Test the outlet and adapter
- Test the wall outlet with a known-good device. If it does not work, try a different outlet.
- If the adapter appears to shut itself off, unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds, then reconnect it. Apple notes that electrical line noise can trigger an adapter’s over-voltage protection.
- If the adapter continues to shut off on a known-good outlet, stop troubleshooting the cable and arrange service.
2. Reconnect and inspect the charging ends
Disconnect the cable from both the Mac and adapter. Reconnect the USB-C end at the adapter and the MagSafe end at the Mac, checking that each is seated securely. Inspect the MagSafe connector and Mac port, and both USB-C ends, for debris. Because the MagSafe port is magnetic, it can attract metal. For the flashing-light procedure, Apple calls for a dry cloth and says the connector and port should be dry and debris-free. Do not use a liquid cleaner.
3. Restart and reconnect if amber keeps flashing
- Disconnect the cable from the Mac and power adapter, then unplug the adapter from the wall.
- Inspect and dry-clean the connector and port, and check the USB-C ends for debris.
- Restart the Mac.
- Reconnect the adapter to power, then reconnect the cable to the adapter and Mac.
Apple gives this sequence for a MagSafe 3 indicator that flashes amber repeatedly. If the light keeps flashing, continue with a cross-test rather than assuming the cable is the cause.

4. Cross-test with USB-C charging or another MagSafe 3 cable
Many Macs with MagSafe 3 can also charge through USB-C. Try a known-good, charging-capable USB-C cable and a suitable USB-C power adapter, or try another MagSafe 3 cable with your adapter. Check that the alternate adapter is appropriate for the Mac model.
If USB-C charging works while the original MagSafe setup continues to flash, the Mac can accept power through that alternate path, but this alone does not identify which MagSafe component failed. If another MagSafe 3 cable works with the same adapter, that points toward the original cable; if it does not, the adapter, port, or Mac may still need evaluation. Apple notes that if another charging method works while the MagSafe indicator continues flashing, a software incompatibility may be involved.

Using MagSafe and USB-C at the same time will not charge the Mac faster. Apple states: “Connecting a charging solution to more than one port, whether MagSafe or USB-C, doesn’t charge your Mac faster.”
5. Check battery status and software
Open the battery menu in macOS and check for “Charging On Hold,” a charge limit, or “Slow Charger.” If charging is paused at a selected percentage, review the battery settings before treating the cable as faulty. If the Mac reports that charging is not as expected, Apple recommends checking for software updates.

Why does it charge only when you move the cable?
A connection that works only when the cable is moved is not reliable. Do not bend, tape, splice, or keep using a visibly damaged charging cable. Test with a known-good cable and adapter if available; if the behavior persists or the cable is damaged, arrange evaluation with Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you charge by USB-C if MagSafe is not working?
Yes, if your Mac model supports USB-C charging. Use a charging-capable USB-C cable and a USB-C adapter suitable for that Mac. It can serve as an alternate way to charge while you isolate the MagSafe issue, but it does not establish whether the failed part is the MagSafe cable, adapter, port, or software.

When to replace the cable or get service
After the outlet, adapter, connections, debris, restart, and cross-tests, replace or seek service if the MagSafe cable still flashes, works only when moved, or shows physical damage. Apple lists a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable (2 m) as a replacement. If a suitable replacement cable does not resolve the issue, or the adapter repeatedly shuts off, have the Mac and charging equipment evaluated by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
