Walking breaks can help you generate more ideas, but they are not a proven shortcut to choosing the best one. The strongest evidence supports divergent thinking—coming up with multiple possibilities—rather than convergent thinking, which involves settling on one answer. Try a comfortable, safe walk during brainstorming, then capture ideas and return to focused work to assess them.
What walking can—and can’t—do for creative thinking
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis found a large pooled effect for walking on divergent thinking, with moderate-certainty evidence: d = 0.93 (95% CI 0.44–1.42). The review combined 23 studies with 1,036 participants, most of whom were post-secondary students. Thabane et al., PLOS ONE, published May 13, 2026.
The result is about a measured average across studies, not a promise that any individual walk will produce a breakthrough. The review’s randomized-studies-only sensitivity analysis also found a large divergent-thinking effect: d = 0.82 (95% CI 0.35–1.28).
For convergent thinking—the work of selecting or identifying one best answer—the pooled estimate was d = 0.16 (95% CI −0.31–0.63). The evidence was very uncertain and did not show a statistically significant effect. Walking may be worth trying to produce options; the evidence does not show that it reliably improves every kind of thinking.

When to take a walking break
Use a walk when your next task is to generate alternatives: possible approaches to a problem, themes for a presentation, analogies, story ideas, or several ways to phrase a message. If you are checking a calculation, comparing evidence, or choosing among options already on the table, return to seated, focused work for that step.
In four experiments, Marily Oppezzo and Daniel L. Schwartz found that walking boosted creative ideation in real time and shortly afterward. The experiments included treadmill walking and a condition in which participants sat after walking, and tested analogy generation as well as other creative tasks. Their 2014 paper in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition supports trying a walk during idea generation and leaving time to record ideas afterward; it does not establish that walking guarantees a useful result.

How to use a walking break for idea generation
- Define the idea-generation task. Before you leave, name what you want to produce: for example, five possible solutions or a few analogies. Keep the goal open-ended rather than asking yourself to prove one answer.
- Choose a comfortable, safe route. Walk somewhere that does not require sustained attention to navigation. Indoors or outdoors can work; choose based on access, comfort, weather, and safety.
- Let the question stay in mind without forcing a solution. Use the walk as space to consider possibilities rather than a test you have to pass. No particular pace, scenery, or minimum duration is established by the evidence.
- Capture ideas when it is safe. You can make a voice note or write a brief reminder during the walk if doing so does not distract you. Otherwise, record ideas as soon as you return so they are not lost.
- Evaluate after the walk. Review what you captured at your desk, check it against the task, and choose what to develop. Treat the walk as a way to support brainstorming, not as a substitute for research, revision, or careful analysis.
Indoor or outdoor: which should you choose?
The 2026 meta-analysis did not detect a significant difference between indoor and outdoor walking for divergent thinking (subgroup p = 0.676). That does not prove the settings are identical in every situation; it means the reviewed analysis did not find a meaningful advantage for one setting. Pick the one that is practical and safe for you.
An indoor corridor or treadmill is an option when outdoor access or weather makes a walk inconvenient. The foundational experiments included treadmill walking, but they did not compare treadmill products or show that buying equipment is necessary. A walking pad is optional, not a requirement for trying this approach.

What the evidence leaves open
- Who benefits most: The review’s participants were mostly post-secondary students, so results may not generalize uniformly across ages, occupations, or day-to-day creative work.
- How long or how fast to walk: The reviewed sources do not establish an ideal duration, pace, frequency, or repeat schedule.
- Whether a walk will help with your specific task: Studies used creative-thinking measures, including lab-style tasks; they do not guarantee better outcomes for every workplace or personal project.
- Whether an idea is good: Generating more possibilities is different from checking their accuracy, usefulness, or originality. Those judgments still require evaluation.
