First identify what is moving: something in your surroundings, your own body, or a tool you are using. Reduce motion that pulls your attention away, then try planned movement—such as a short break—if it helps you return to the task. Keep only changes that improve focus without disrupting anyone else. Movement helps some people in some situations; it is not a universal fix.

Identify which movement is interrupting your focus

The right adjustment depends on the source of the distraction and what the task requires. A moving screen or people crossing your view may compete with reading, while movement during a listening task may matter less—or may still pull your attention away. A fidget item can also become its own visual or auditory distraction.

  • Environmental movement: people passing by, activity in your line of sight, or visual clutter around your workspace.
  • Your own movement: leg bouncing, shifting position, or getting up while you work.
  • A tool’s movement or sound: a spinner or other object that draws your eyes, makes noise, or attracts other people’s attention.

Notice when attention slips and what is happening at that moment. The goal is not to eliminate all movement; it is to find out whether a particular kind of movement interrupts the task or helps you stay with it.

Reduce movement and clutter that compete with the task

Start with changes that do not require buying anything. If motion in your surroundings is the problem, move your seat or workspace so fewer people or screens are in view, if that is practical. Clear unnecessary visual clutter and limit other distractions. NHS inform recommends quiet work zones, reducing unnecessary visual clutter, and limiting distractions among possible strategies for ADHD in work and education: NHS inform’s workplace and education guidance.

Make the task easier to re-enter after an interruption: write down the next action, divide a long assignment into smaller portions, and decide what “done” means for the next portion. In classrooms, the CDC suggests clear tasks, shorter assignments, breaks, time to move, and minimizing distractions. Its guidance also emphasizes observing and talking with the student about what helps or distracts them, because the same strategy can help one child and distract another: CDC guidance on ADHD in the classroom.

Plan movement rather than waiting until focus has gone

For a long stretch of work, schedule a brief movement break between manageable portions rather than letting interruptions dictate when you stop. Use the break to stand, stretch, walk, or otherwise change position, then return to a clearly chosen next step. NHS inform includes planned breaks and opportunities for movement among possible adjustments in education and work settings.

In classrooms, physical activity can be built into lessons or offered as a break. The CDC says classroom physical activity can support concentration and staying on task: CDC classroom physical activity guidance. That is a reason to consider planned activity—not evidence that more movement will improve focus for every person or during every task.

At work, possible changes depend on the job. A quieter personal space or planned movement breaks may be feasible for some roles and not others; discuss practical options with the relevant person at work if needed. The cited guidance describes possible strategies, not a universal workplace arrangement.

Try a fidget tool only if it keeps attention on the task

A fidget item is optional. If you want to test one, choose a quiet, visually unobtrusive object and see whether it lets you stay with the main task. Stop using it if you find yourself watching it, listening to it, or if it distracts people nearby. The CDC recommends individual observation rather than assuming that fidget tools—or movement more broadly—will help every student.

Evidence about fidget spinners in classrooms is mixed and narrow. A 2021 study using a multiple-baseline design with three second-grade students with ADHD reported immediate and sustained increases in on-task behavior during spinner use; its sample is too small to establish that the result applies to other students, ages, tasks, or tools. A 2018 classroom evaluation involving 60 preschool children diagnosed with ADHD associated spinner use with poorer attention. The studies differ in age and context, and neither settles whether fidgeting generally helps: 2021 study record and 2018 study record.

Evaluate each change by whether it improves the actual task

Change one thing at a time when you can—for example, move to a less visually busy spot, then try a planned break on another work session. A short task log can make the comparison easier: note the task, the adjustment, whether you completed the intended portion, and whether the adjustment itself became distracting. This is a practical way to compare your own experience, not a tested treatment.

  • Did you spend more attention on the task, rather than on the movement or tool?
  • Could you stop or adjust the strategy easily?
  • Did it create noise, visual distraction, or disruption for someone else?
  • Was it useful for this kind of task—especially whether you needed to read, watch, or listen?

For a student, involve the student in deciding what to try; a teacher and family can help observe whether an adjustment is useful across settings. CDC notes that information about which accommodations work for children with ADHD is limited, so individualized observation matters more than assuming a strategy will work based on its label.
