3D scanner accuracy tells you how close measured dimensions are to the true dimensions; resolution tells you how small a feature the scanner can distinguish. Neither number answers the other question. A scan can show fine detail but be dimensionally wrong, or measure overall dimensions well while missing a narrow groove. To choose a scanner, match its documented performance and detail capture to your object, required tolerance, and scanning workflow.
Accuracy, precision, and resolution answer different questions
These terms describe separate aspects of a scan. SHINING 3D’s guide to scanner accuracy, precision, resolution, and volumetric accuracy explains the distinctions; its examples are manufacturer guidance, not a performance guarantee for another scanner or setup.
| Measure | What it tells you | Why it matters in a project |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | How close a measured dimension is to its true value. | Whether the result falls within the project’s dimensional tolerance. |
| Precision | How consistent repeated measurements are. | Whether the same workflow produces repeatable results. |
| Resolution | How small a detail the system can distinguish. | Whether features such as grooves, edges, or small shapes appear in the captured geometry. |
| Volumetric accuracy | How dimensional performance behaves across a measurement volume. | Whether performance is suitable across the size and span of the object. |
A high resolution figure does not prove high dimensional accuracy. Likewise, a scanner that measures a large part accurately may not capture its smallest details. Select based on the requirement that matters most, then check the other measures separately.
Why one accuracy number may not predict your result
Ask what an accuracy specification measures and under what conditions. For example, a point-level figure and a volumetric figure describe different things; a result measured across a volume is more relevant when the project depends on dimensions spanning a large object. A distance-dependent specification can accumulate error over length, so a result at one scale should not automatically be applied to another.

NIST’s 2019 review, “Sources of Errors in Structured Light 3D Scanners,” notes that structured-light scanners vary in sensor configuration, projected patterns, work volume, point density, triangulation angle, and targets. If the test setup differs from your planned application, its result may not describe how the scanner will perform on your part.
- Check whether the stated result is point-level or volumetric.
- Find the tested measurement range and compare it with the object and the dimensions you need to measure.
- Ask which method and standard were used, including the standard’s part, and whether the report applies to the scanner’s specific configuration.
- Compare the test conditions with your actual surface, geometry, targets or markers, and scanning setup.
What standards and test reports can—and cannot—tell you
Standards make performance evidence easier to interpret, but passing a test does not establish suitability for every object or workflow. NIST’s 2024 study, “VDI/VDE 2634-2 and ISO 10360-13 Performance Evaluation Tests, and Systematic Errors in Structured Light Systems,” compared length-test sensitivity for the two approaches. In that study, ISO 10360-13 length tests were more sensitive to system model parameters than VDI/VDE 2634-2 tests, but even the ISO tests did not detect every parameter with high sensitivity. That finding is specific to the study; it does not establish that one standard guarantees better results in every application.

SHINING 3D’s guide discusses VDI/VDE 2634 parts and ISO 10360-13. When evaluating a certificate or report, check the standard and part, scanner configuration, test range, stated result, and testing laboratory. Then decide whether those conditions resemble your intended work. A report is useful evidence, not a substitute for matching performance to your project.
How to compare scanners for a real project
Compare candidate scanners against the part and workflow rather than ranking them by a single headline number. NIST’s 2019 review supports considering configuration, work volume, point density, triangulation angle, and targets; the manufacturer guide recommends checking the scope of certificates and reports.

| Comparison factor | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Dimensional performance | Which accuracy measure is stated, and whether it is point-level or volumetric. |
| Detail capture | Whether resolution is sufficient for the smallest feature the project must retain. |
| Object size and work volume | Whether the documented test range covers the part and intended scanning approach. |
| Evidence | The test method, standard and part, configuration, and scope of the certificate or report. |
| Workflow compatibility | Whether the process uses targets or markers, and whether the object’s surface and geometry suit that setup. |
| Tolerance margin | Whether documented scanner performance leaves sufficient room for the project’s tolerance and other contributions in the workflow. |
Do not assume the scanner alone determines the final measurement. The setup and workflow also matter; the available sources do not quantify a universal tolerance margin or prescribe one for every project. For dimensional inspection, request evidence for the configuration and use you intend, and consider whether verification or calibration services are needed for your process. Use scanner markers only if the selected workflow requires them.

- Describe the part. Record its dimensions, the smallest feature you need to preserve, and the required dimensional tolerance.
- Set the primary goal. Decide whether you need visual digitizing, reverse engineering, or dimensional inspection; these goals put different emphasis on detail and measurement.
- Clarify the accuracy claim. Ask the vendor what the published figure represents, how it was tested, and whether it is point-level or volumetric.
- Match range and configuration. Check that the tested range and scanner setup resemble the object and your planned workflow.
- Review the report. Request the applicable certificate or test report and verify its standard, part, configuration, range, and scope.
- Evaluate detail separately. Confirm that resolution suits the feature size; do not treat it as a replacement for dimensional accuracy.
Product availability, accessories, software, and service terms should be checked separately for the scanner options you are considering; they are not established by the performance sources cited here.
