Choose IIT Madras School Connect if you want a structured, eight-week online introduction to a field and your school is partnered with the program. Choose school-based enrichment if its specific activities, teacher access, hands-on work, or school-day schedule better match how you learn. There is no universal winner: compare the actual course and local program on subject, eligibility, time, cost, support, and access before deciding.
What IIT Madras School Connect offers
School Connect is an introductory certificate program for students in Classes IX–XII. Access requires a school partnership, and individual courses may have subject-level requirements. Each course runs for eight weeks and combines recorded lectures, a weekly live session, assignments every two weeks, and computer-based assessment. Students who meet course requirements receive a certificate from IIT Madras’s Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE). IIT Madras School Connect program page
IIT Madras’s September 2026 announcement lists 17 future-focused disciplines, including data science and AI, aerospace, cybersecurity, electronic systems, architecture and design, law, economics and finance, humanities, ecology, game technology, and engineering biological systems. The list does not mean every course is open for enrollment at all times; check the current offering and its prerequisites. IIT Madras announcement
How to compare it with your school’s enrichment program
“School-based enrichment” can mean very different things, and no particular school program is specified here. Use the comparison below as a checklist, then fill in the details of the actual local offer. The School Connect information comes from IIT Madras; local program details need to be confirmed with the school.

| Decision point | IIT Madras School Connect | School-based enrichment | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Introductory exposure to a defined discipline through a course. | Depends on the school’s program. | Is the goal exploration, subject support, project work, or exam preparation? |
| Eligibility and access | For Classes IX–XII; a partnered school is required, and a course may set additional requirements. | Set by the school or provider; details vary. | Who is eligible, whether enrollment is open, and who handles registration? |
| Format and support | Recorded lectures, weekly live sessions, biweekly assignments, and computer-based assessment over eight weeks. | May be in-person or mixed; the format depends on the specific offer. | How much direct teacher feedback, discussion, and practical work are included? |
| Cost | The partnership page says the school pays no partnership fee. It asks schools to collect ₹500 from each interested student for a course and remit the amount in bulk to IIT Madras. Partnership information | Not stated; ask the school for its fee and any associated costs. | Compare the full cost, including materials, transport, and extra fees. |
| Schedule | Online, but includes a weekly live session and assignments. | May fit into the school day or take place outside it; verify locally. | Check timetable conflicts and whether the weekly workload is realistic. |
| Technology | Online participation requires suitable access; confirm the specific course’s requirements. | Depends on the activity and school facilities. | Ask what device, internet connection, and software are needed and whether the student can access them already. |
| Credential | IIT Madras CODE certificate for students who meet course requirements. | Any certificate or recognition depends on the school’s program. | Consider the learning and work involved, not the credential name alone. |
Which option is likely to fit the student?
School Connect may suit a student who
- Wants to explore a particular field through a defined course without leaving regular school.
- Can manage recorded material, scheduled online sessions, assignments, and computer-based assessment.
- Has access through a partnered school and meets the selected course’s requirements.
School-based enrichment may suit a student who
- Benefits from in-person practice, immediate teacher support, or activities integrated into the school day.
- Would learn more from the particular project, subject focus, or format the school actually offers.
- Needs a schedule or level of direct guidance that the local program can provide more reliably.
These are fit considerations, not claims that either format produces better outcomes. IIT Madras reports that more than 4,900 schools, including more than 60 outside India, have partnered with School Connect and that over 1.75 lakh students have benefited. Those are institute-reported participation figures, not independent measures of learning or proof that the program outperforms a school’s enrichment offer. IIT Madras announcement
Check access, cost, and dates before committing
- Ask whether the school is partnered. School Connect access is tied to a school partnership; ask the school how interested students register and whether the chosen course has additional requirements. IIT Madras partnership information
- Confirm the current cohort and course. IIT Madras listed an October 2026 cohort deadline of September 30, 2026, with classes starting October 5, 2026; both dates have passed. Its home page schedules registration for the January 2027 batch to open October 21, 2026. Check the official page for current availability and dates before acting. - Check the device and internet requirements. IIT Madras identifies a laptop or desktop and good internet as key requirements for effective learning in its online degree programs. Treat this as a practical access check, not proof that every School Connect course has identical technical requirements. Ask about the specific course and check for a usable device already available at home or school before considering a purchase. IIT Madras online degree admissions page
- Compare the full workload and expense. Include the live-session time, assignments, any school-based activity time, course fee, materials, and transport where applicable. Ask the school for details that are not listed publicly.
Do not confuse School Connect with an IIT Madras degree
School Connect is an eight-week certificate course, not an IIT Madras degree. The institute separately offers online degree programs. Its Management and Data Science admissions page says students may apply after appearing for Class XI finals but join after passing Class XII; that route has its own eligibility and degree-level commitment. It is a different choice from a short School Connect course. IIT Madras online degree admissions
