School students have two distinct IIT Madras online study routes: IITM School Connect, which offers introductory courses for Classes IX–XII through partner schools, and online BS degree programs, which have separate admissions and progression rules. To find a suitable option, check the official course or degree page for eligibility and dates, then follow that program’s enrollment process.
Choose between School Connect and an online BS degree

These routes serve different purposes: School Connect lets students explore subjects through short courses, while a BS program is a longer academic pathway. Do not assume that School Connect enrollment qualifies a student for a degree, or that degree admissions rules apply to a short course. Find and enroll in an IITM School Connect course
1. Browse the active course listing
Start with the IITM School Connect course listing. Current listed areas include data science and AI, electronic systems, architecture and design, and engineering biological systems. Availability can vary by cohort, so a subject appearing on the listing does not guarantee it will run in every batch.
2. Check the individual course requirements
Open the course’s own page to confirm the eligible class, prerequisites, schedule, and certificate conditions. The program is aimed at Classes IX–XII, but requirements may differ between courses. IIT Madras describes a format involving recorded weekly videos, live interactive sessions, assignments, and computer-based assessments; its official pages describe courses as eight weeks long. Check the current course page for the active cohort’s details.

3. Ask your school about partnership and enrollment
School Connect access requires enrollment through a partner school. Contact the school coordinator to ask whether your school participates and how it handles registration. According to the School Connect student guide, portal access is granted after the School Connect team verifies enrollment.
4. Follow the current cohort instructions
Use the registration instructions linked from the live course listing or provided by your school. Forms can have cohort-specific requirements: for example, the August 2026 form required a student’s own valid Gmail address. That historical instruction should not be assumed to apply to later cohorts. IIT Madras announced on 7 September 2026 that applications had opened for the October 2026 cohort. The listing stated that registration for the January 2027 batch would open on 21 October 2026; check the live page to confirm the date and current status.

Check eligibility for an online BS program
If you want a degree rather than an introductory course, select the specific online BS program and read its current admissions page. Eligibility and progression requirements differ by program and term. The CODE overview describes students who have completed Class XI final exams as being able to attempt the qualifier and enter the foundation level while studying Class XII, then join after completing Class XII. Treat that as an overview; the program-specific admissions page governs the current process.
BS Data Science and Applications
The BS Data Science admissions page says applicants may apply after passing Class XII or an equivalent. School students who have appeared for their Class XI final exams may also apply and join after passing Class XII. Applicants are expected to have studied Mathematics and English in Class X. The page describes a qualifier process and directs applicants to cycle-specific instructions, so verify the current requirements, documents, and deadlines there.

Other online BS programs
IIT Madras’s CODE overview includes programs such as Electronic Systems as well as Data Science and Applications. Do not transfer Data Science eligibility or progression rules to another degree: check that program’s own admissions page for its current requirements and application dates. A deadline in an older announcement may have passed; for example, an IIT Madras release dated 11 May 2026 listed 31 May as a BS admissions deadline. Use the live program page rather than relying on that date.

For BS Data Science, IIT Madras identifies a laptop or desktop and a good internet connection as key requirements for learning. Its admissions information also mentions a smartphone for home-proctored online exams and travel to assigned exam centres for quizzes and exams. Check the current mandatory system specifications and exam instructions on the program page before making arrangements. School Connect sources do not establish that every participant must personally own a computer, so ask your school about access rather than assuming a purchase is necessary.

IIT Madras’s Annual Report 2024–25 reports more than 36,000 students enrolled across referenced online programs, including Data Science and Electronic Systems. That figure is not a School Connect enrollment count.
