Check the light on the MagSafe 3 connector, then check Battery status in macOS. A steady amber light means the battery is charging or charging is on hold; green means it is fully charged. Repeated amber flashing may signal a charging issue, so use the Mac’s battery message and the steps below to diagnose it.
What the MagSafe 3 light means
When you connect the cable, its indicator should glow. Apple defines green as fully charged and amber as charging. Amber can also mean charging is on hold, so the light by itself does not confirm that the battery percentage is increasing. See Apple’s MacBook Pro battery guide and MagSafe troubleshooting guidance.
Repeated amber flashing is different from a steady amber light. Apple says it may indicate a charging issue.
Check whether macOS is charging or holding the battery
Open the Battery status menu in macOS and read the message. Apple says the battery may not start charging when charging is on hold or the charge limit has been reached. Messages can include “Charging On Hold,” “Charged to [%] Limit,” or “Charging to [%] Limit.” A hold or limit can explain why the percentage is not rising even though the cable is connected.

If the charge limit has been reached and you need a full charge, choose Charge to Full Now from the Battery menu. Apple’s general instructions are in Charge your Mac laptop computer.
Fix a MagSafe 3 light that keeps flashing
- Disconnect the USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable from both the Mac and the power adapter, then unplug the adapter from the wall.
- Use a dry cloth to wipe the MagSafe 3 port and connector. Make sure both are dry and free of debris.
- Check the adapter’s USB-C port and the cable’s USB-C connector for debris.
- Restart the Mac.
- Plug the adapter back into the wall, connect the cable to the adapter and Mac, and try charging again.
- If repeated flashing continues, test another MagSafe 3 cable or charge over USB-C. If another cable or USB-C works but the original cable still blinks, that does not by itself prove the original cable is physically damaged: Apple notes that software incompatibility may also be involved. Check for macOS software updates.
- If the problem persists, arrange an evaluation at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Confirm that your Mac and charging setup are compatible
MagSafe 3 uses a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable and a USB-C power adapter. Apple lists MagSafe 3 on MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, except the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro (2022), and MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later. Original MagSafe and MagSafe 2 adapters are not compatible with MagSafe 3. Check your Mac’s model before replacing a cable or adapter.
Adapter wattage and charging speed
Apple’s 2026 MacBook Pro guide lists 70 W and 96 W USB-C adapters for 14-inch models and a 140 W adapter for 16-inch models. It says a 96 W adapter can fast-charge a 14-inch MacBook Pro to up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes, and a 140 W adapter can charge a 16-inch model to approximately 50 percent in around 30 minutes. Those examples use the included MagSafe 3 cable or a 240 W USB-C Charge Cable. They are model-specific examples, not a timing guarantee for every Mac, adapter, or battery condition. When to replace a cable or seek service
If a known-compatible cable or USB-C charging works but the original MagSafe 3 cable continues to flash after cleaning, restarting, and checking for software updates, have the cable and charging setup evaluated before assuming which component failed. Apple lists its USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable (2 m) as a replacement option. If the cable or adapter still does not work, Apple recommends service evaluation at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
