You can use an old Android phone to run some Linux server software with Termux and PRoot-Distro, but that setup is not Docker Engine: it does not run the Docker daemon. If you need a real dockerd, a separate community-documented option uses Debian in QEMU under Termux, though support and reliability depend on the phone and are not established broadly.
First, decide what you mean by “Docker server”
People use “Docker server” to mean two different things: running an app that is available as a container image, or running Docker Engine itself so it can manage containers. The distinction matters on Android.
- Run server software or an OCI image’s contents: Termux with PRoot-Distro can provide a Linux userland for running some software, without a Docker daemon. PRoot-Distro documents server use cases such as Nginx, Nextcloud, and PostgreSQL. See the PRoot-Distro documentation.
- Run Docker Engine: Docker Engine includes the
dockerddaemon. Docker’s documentation describes its configuration and persistent data directory for a regular Linux installation. Docker Engine daemon documentation.
The first option is simpler, but it is not a drop-in Docker host. The second uses a virtual machine and is a distinct, more demanding approach.
What the Termux and PRoot-Distro route can do
Termux runs programs on Android and uses the phone’s Android kernel; it is not itself a conventional Linux virtual machine. Its software uses Android’s bionic C library rather than glibc, so a program that expects a standard desktop or server Linux environment may not work as expected. Termux and Android OS.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
PRoot-Distro installs a Linux userland inside Termux. That gives you a distribution environment in which to run compatible server programs or work with OCI image contents. It does not add a separate Linux kernel or turn Android into a conventional Docker host. PRoot-Distro project documentation.
Install a Linux userland with Termux
- Install Termux from one of the distribution channels listed by the project. Avoid assuming that every download source is interchangeable; use a channel identified by the Termux project. Termux installation and project information.
- Open Termux and install PRoot-Distro with
pkg install proot-distro. - Install a distribution, for example Ubuntu, with
proot-distro install ubuntu. - Enter the installed userland with
proot-distro login ubuntu. From there, install and run software supported by that environment, following the application’s own instructions.
These steps create a Linux userland for applications; they do not install Docker Engine or start dockerd. PRoot-Distro also documents pulling Docker/OCI images and running their commands, but that should not be confused with operating a Docker daemon. PRoot-Distro documentation.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Run a server process and expose a port
PRoot-Distro documents background sessions and port redirection. For example, Android users can redirect a privileged port such as 80 to a higher port that is more practical to use in this environment. Check the project’s current syntax and examples before applying a command, as options may change. PRoot-Distro usage documentation.
Starting a process in the background is not the same as configuring a production-grade service. PRoot-Distro documents that service supervisors generally cannot run and that kernel cgroups and namespaces are unavailable. Those constraints affect process management and the isolation features associated with Docker. PRoot-Distro limitations.

Why this is not equivalent to Docker Engine
Docker Engine relies on kernel features for container isolation and resource management. PRoot-Distro explicitly operates without the Docker daemon, and its documented limitations include unavailable kernel namespaces and cgroups. As a result, applications that depend on those features, Docker-style isolation, or standard service-supervisor behavior may not work in this route.
Use the Termux userland path when the goal is to experiment with Linux software or run a compatible server process on a spare phone. Do not treat it as a substitute for a supported Linux Docker host when a workload requires Docker Engine’s daemon or container isolation.

Can you run a real Docker daemon through QEMU?
A separate community project describes running Debian 12 under QEMU in Termux with a real Docker daemon. Project: Debian under QEMU in Termux. This is a virtual-machine approach, not a feature of the basic PRoot-Distro setup.
The project establishes that this implementation is documented, not that it works reliably on every Android phone. The available information does not establish broad device compatibility, performance, or dependable long-term service operation. Treat it as an experiment for a specific device rather than a generally supported deployment recipe.

Choose the route that matches your workload
| Question | Termux + PRoot-Distro | Debian in QEMU |
|---|---|---|
| Does it run a real Docker daemon? | No. PRoot-Distro operates without dockerd. |
A community project describes a Debian 12 VM with a real daemon; this is specific to that implementation. |
| Best fit | Compatible server software or commands from OCI image contents, for experimentation or lightweight use. | A user specifically seeking Docker Engine and willing to try a VM-based setup. |
| Kernel-feature constraints | Documented limitations include unavailable cgroups and kernel namespaces. | Device-specific behavior is not established by the project evidence. |
| Compatibility and reliability | Applications may differ because Termux uses Android’s bionic library and the host Android kernel. | Broad phone coverage, performance, and stable long-term operation are not established. |
If your priority is a working web or database process and it is compatible with the userland, start with PRoot-Distro. If your application specifically requires Docker Engine, the QEMU project is the relevant community route, but verify it on the phone you intend to use before depending on it.
