The first can make it easier to follow the next turn, while the second gives you a steady view of the surrounding layout. Neither is universally better: the clearer choice depends on whether you need immediate route guidance or a stable overview.
What does it mean for a minimap to rotate?
Imagine turning right while playing. On a rotating or movement-up minimap, the map turns so the direction you are moving remains at the top. On a fixed or north-up minimap, the map stays oriented the same way and your player marker changes heading.
“Rotating map puzzle” is not a standard category in the studies discussed here. In this context, the puzzle is the everyday task of interpreting your position and direction from a map whose orientation either changes with you or stays fixed.
Why does my minimap rotate?
A rotating minimap makes the map’s top correspond to your immediate forward direction. That can make the display feel aligned with what you see ahead: if you are moving toward the top of the screen, the route ahead is also toward the top of the map. Anthony J. Aretz described this as congruence with an egocentric, forward-looking view.

This alignment can help when your immediate task is to follow a route or make the next turn. It also means the map changes orientation as you turn, so landmarks and directions do not stay in one fixed relationship to the screen.
Is a north-up minimap easier to use?
A north-up minimap keeps a consistent reference. As your marker turns, the surrounding map remains stable, which can make it easier to build or retain a broader picture of where locations lie in relation to one another. Aretz’s discussion of electronic map displays notes that this stability can aid acquisition of a cognitive map.

The trade-off is that a fixed map may not match the direction you are facing. To use it for a forward-looking task, you may have to mentally rotate the map or relate your heading to its north-up orientation. The better fit therefore depends partly on whether you are following a nearby route or learning the layout.
How do the two orientations compare?

These are design trade-offs, not guarantees about every player’s experience. Map size, the game environment, how much route guidance is needed, and personal preference can all affect which orientation feels clearer.

What do navigation studies show?
A controlled game-maze experiment
A York University experiment compared a still minimap, which kept north at the top, with a rotating minimap, which kept the participant’s movement direction at the top. Both minimap conditions performed well, and participants’ subjective ratings for the two minimaps were statistically similar. The rotating minimap’s path efficiency was comparable to the study’s direct navigation-line condition.
In that experiment, the navigation-line condition averaged 21.6 seconds per waypoint. This is a result from that specific study, not a general benchmark for game navigation. The authors also reported that both minimaps were significantly faster than the arrow, light-pillar, and compass conditions they tested. The experiment used a controlled maze and a limited group of participants, so it does not establish a universal winner across games or players.

A computer-based navigation task
A 2001 study by Cuevas and colleagues found neither north-up nor track-up more accurate or faster in its task. Participants using track-up reported greater difficulty and rated it as less helpful. That distinction matters: task performance and perceived workload or usefulness are related questions, but one result does not automatically predict the other.
Taken together, the findings support a task-dependent choice. Aretz’s 1991 analysis describes the central trade-off: “The stability of a north-up alignment aids the acquisition of a cognitive map, but there is a cost associated with the mental rotation of the display to a track-up alignment for tasks involving the ego-centered forward view.” Study results do not establish how all players will respond, or which orientation will work best in every game.

Should the map rotate with the player?
If you are choosing between settings, try each orientation in the kind of situation where you rely on the minimap. A rotating view may suit a short, turn-by-turn route; a fixed view may suit remembering where destinations sit relative to one another. If the game offers both, preference is a practical factor because the available findings do not identify one choice as best for everyone.
For game designers, the evidence suggests matching map behavior to the navigation task rather than assuming that one orientation is always superior. A game can also differ in its environments, map scale, and other navigation cues, so a result from a controlled maze should not be treated as a prediction for every design.
