Yes. You can use Microsoft’s Remote Desktop client without buying a separate remote-access app, but the PC you want to control must run an eligible Windows edition. For Microsoft’s documented consumer setup, that means Windows Pro: a Windows Home PC can connect to another computer, but it cannot host incoming Remote Desktop connections. If you only need to help someone who is present to approve a session, Microsoft Quick Assist is a separate option.
What “free” means for Microsoft Remote Desktop
Microsoft’s setup instructions describe using the Remote Desktop client and Windows App without stating a separate client-software fee. That does not mean every Remote Desktop product or business/server use is free. The key cost consideration for many home users is the edition of Windows installed on the computer they want to access: Microsoft’s documented consumer host setup requires Windows Pro. If that PC runs Home, you may need to upgrade Windows to use this particular built-in host feature.
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date, so an unsupported Windows 10 PC is not a sound long-term host choice. Does the PC you connect to need Windows Pro?
For Microsoft’s built-in Remote Desktop feature, distinguish the host from the client. The host is the PC being accessed; the client is the device you use to connect. The host needs an edition that supports incoming connections. Microsoft’s broader guidance lists Professional, Enterprise, Education, and Windows Server editions as capable of hosting, while its consumer setup instructions specify Windows Pro. Remote Desktop is intended for reaching a host computer. Quick Assist and Remote Assistance are support tools in which the person at the device participates. How to set up Microsoft Remote Desktop
- Check the host edition: On the PC you want to reach, open Settings > System > About and check the Windows edition. The consumer setup requires Windows Pro for the host.
- Enable incoming connections: On the host, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and turn on Remote Desktop.
- Note the PC name: Record the host’s PC name from the Remote Desktop settings or system information.
- Connect from the client: Open the Remote Desktop client or Windows App on the other device, enter the host’s PC name, and sign in with an account authorized on that PC.
- Keep the host available: The PC must be powered on and network reachable for the connection to work.

What to know before enabling remote access
Turning on Remote Desktop opens a port on the host and makes it accessible to devices on the local network. Microsoft recommends enabling it only on trusted networks and using strong, unique passwords for accounts allowed to connect. Access from outside the host’s network requires additional network configuration; Microsoft describes VPN or port forwarding as possible approaches. How Quick Assist works for one-time help
Quick Assist is a better fit when another person is at the remote computer and can approve help. The helper generates a time-limited security code; the recipient enters it and allows screen sharing, and the helper must request permission separately to take control. The helper must authenticate with a Microsoft account or Microsoft Entra ID; Microsoft’s technical guidance says the person sharing their screen does not have to authenticate.
