If your Revopoint scan loses tracking, pause and return to a distinctive area you already captured; if the mesh is noisy, stop rescanning the same patch; if it has holes, check whether the missing geometry was ever captured. These problems have different fixes, so start with the symptom rather than recalibrating or buying an accessory by default.

How to recover when tracking is lost

  1. Stop moving. Continuing to sweep while tracking is lost can add bad frames. Check the capture for a mis-scanned frame and undo or remove it if the software offers that option.
  2. Return to a known area. Point the scanner toward a previously captured region with distinctive features, then hold it still for several seconds or until tracking returns. Revopoint describes this recovery approach in its Revo Scan 5 manual and scanning tips.
  3. Check distance and pace. Keep the scanner within the acceptable range shown by the software’s distance indicator. Once tracking resumes, move more slowly and steadily.
  4. Review exposure and the surface. Manual exposure can contribute to tracking trouble; try auto exposure if it is available in the selected scan mode. Dark surfaces can also be difficult to track.

When to use markers

Feature tracking relies on recognizable surface details. Smooth areas and repeating patterns may not give the scanner enough unique information to maintain its position. In those cases, switch to marker tracking and arrange markers irregularly so the scanner sees distinct patterns rather than a repeated layout.

Revopoint’s official guidance gives two different operational recommendations: its general scanning guide says to plan for six or more markers in view per frame, while its marker-placement page recommends 8–15 markers in a single frame for the best tracking experience. These are recommendations from separate guides, not a single universal minimum. Follow the guidance for your scanner and scan setup: general scanning guide and marker placement guide.

On a surface with plenty of distinct, irregular features, added markers may not be necessary. Marker dots or tape are useful options for featureless or repetitive regions, but check compatibility with your scanner and mode.

How to scan dark, shiny, transparent, or metallic objects

These finishes can absorb, transmit, or reflect projected light in ways that make capture harder. First check working distance, lighting, and exposure; Revopoint’s software guidance discusses exposure adjustment when surface contrast interferes with tracking. If the finish remains problematic, Revopoint recommends lightly and evenly matting the surface with scanning spray or fine powder. See its surface-treatment guidance and Revo Scan 5 manual.

Do not treat spray or powder as a universal requirement. Confirm that a treatment is safe for the object and can be removed, and test an inconspicuous area first. Exposure and lighting adjustments may be preferable when coating the object is not appropriate.

How to reduce noise in a Revopoint mesh

Once a region is captured, keep moving rather than repeatedly scanning that same patch. Revopoint warns that repeated scanning of the same area adds noise and reduces model quality in the Revo Scan 5 User Manual. Also check that you are within the recommended working distance, moving at a controlled speed, and using suitable exposure.

If the model still looks rough or grainy, calibration may be appropriate for your product and symptom; Revopoint’s calibration guidance specifically identifies rough or grainy results as a reason to calibrate. Calibration procedures and timing vary by product, so use the instructions for your model rather than assuming every Revopoint scanner needs the same routine.

How to find and fix holes in a mesh

First decide whether the hole is in the scan or the object

A hole in the mesh may mean the scanner missed part of the surface, or it may represent an actual opening in the object. Inspect the object and the captured data before trying to fill it. If the underlying surface was missed, a mesh-editing tool cannot reliably recover geometry that was never recorded.

Capture the missed area from another angle

Reposition the scanner to improve coverage and rescan where practical. Highly angled areas can be missed during a standard horizontal pass; Revopoint’s RANGE tutorial suggests adding a vertical pass and merging the scans. This is a model-specific workflow example, so check that it applies to your scanner and software.

Fill only suitable remaining gaps in editing

For small holes left after capture, mesh editing may help. Revopoint’s RANGE tutorial discusses post-editing holes, and its support index lists a dedicated “How do I fill holes?” article. The current controls and limitations of that tool are not established here, so do not assume it can reconstruct arbitrary missing geometry.

When calibration is appropriate

Calibration is not a universal first troubleshooting step. Revopoint’s support article dated September 8, 2026 says brand-new scanners normally do not need calibration after leaving the factory; it recommends calibration if the surface looks rough or grainy, Marker Mode cannot recognize markers, or you want the best possible accuracy. See Revopoint’s calibration article.

Trackit has separate guidance: calibrate before first use, after a change in environmental temperature or transport, and after a week of use or when high accuracy is required. Those instructions are specific to Trackit; do not apply them to other Revopoint product lines without checking their own documentation. Use the calibration procedure for your scanner and current software.

Choose the fix that matches the failure

Problem First intervention When an additional measure makes sense
Tracking loss on a feature-rich surface Pause, return to a distinctive captured area, and hold steady until tracking returns. Check distance, pace, and exposure if tracking remains unstable.
Tracking loss on smooth or repetitive geometry Use marker tracking and place markers irregularly. Follow the marker count guidance for your scanner and setup.
Capture trouble on a difficult finish Check distance, lighting, and exposure. Consider a safe, removable matte treatment if the surface still interferes with capture.
Noisy or grainy mesh Stop repeatedly scanning already captured areas and review distance, speed, and exposure. Calibrate if the product guidance and symptom call for it.
Hole in the mesh Determine whether the area was missed, then rescan from a better angle where possible. Use mesh editing for suitable remaining gaps, without expecting it to recreate arbitrary missing surfaces.
