To stop repeated calls, choose a control that matches the caller: screen or silence unsaved numbers on iPhone, block private or unidentified numbers in Google’s Phone app on Android, or block a specific repeat caller from call history. These options work differently, and silencing a call does not always prevent voicemail or keep it out of call records.
What “unknown” means on your phone
Phone settings use “unknown” for different kinds of calls. An unsaved number is visible but is not in your contacts; a private or unidentified number hides its caller ID; and a suspected spam call is flagged by a carrier or caller-identification system. A control for one category may not affect the others.
Before silencing all unsaved callers, consider whether a school, clinic, delivery driver, or new contact might need to reach you. If the same identifiable number keeps calling, blocking that number directly is the more targeted option.
Manage unknown callers on iPhone
On supported iOS versions, open Settings > Apps > Phone and choose the available call-screening or filtering control. The exact labels and options vary by iOS version. Apple documents these call-screening choices:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Never: Unsaved numbers ring normally.
- Ask Reason for Calling: The phone screens the caller before it rings, asking them to identify themselves and why they are calling.
- Silence: Calls from unsaved numbers are sent to voicemail and appear in Recents.
Apple also provides separate filters: an Unknown Callers filter moves calls from unknown numbers to an Unknown Callers list, while a Spam filter silences calls the carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud and moves them to a Spam list. A filtered or silenced call is not necessarily blocked from reaching voicemail. See Apple’s guide to screening and blocking calls and Apple’s unknown-caller options and caveats.
Add important numbers to Contacts if you want to make it less likely they will be treated as unknown. Apple notes that call screening is turned off for 24 hours after you call emergency services. On iOS versions earlier than iOS 17, Live Voicemail must also be enabled for call screening, and calls are not screened while roaming.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Block one repeat caller on iPhone
Open the Phone app’s call history, select the call or number, and choose the option to block the caller. This targets that specific number rather than every caller who is not saved in your contacts. Apple documents blocking a specific contact in its call screening and blocking guide.
Block callers on Android with Google’s Phone app
These instructions apply to Google’s Phone app. Menus and available features can differ on phones using a manufacturer’s phone app or carrier-specific settings.

Block private or unidentified callers
- Open the Phone app and tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings > Blocked numbers.
- Turn on Unknown.
This setting blocks calls with private or unidentified caller ID. It does not block every number missing from your contacts. Google Phone app Help puts it plainly: “This will block calls from private or unidentified numbers. You will still receive calls from phone numbers that are not stored in your contacts.” Read Google’s instructions for blocking numbers and its explanation of what the Unknown setting blocks.
Block a specific repeat caller
- Open the Phone app and go to call history.
- Select the call from the number you want to stop.
- Choose Block / report spam.
Google says blocked calls do not appear in call history. If visual voicemail is on, blocked callers cannot leave voicemail. See Google’s call-blocking instructions.

Filter suspected spam calls
For Google’s caller-identification and spam controls, open Phone > More > Settings > Caller ID and spam and enable the option you want. The Filter spam calls setting filters calls identified as spam; it is not a blanket block for unsaved numbers. Google says filtered calls do not produce missed-call or voicemail notifications, but remain in call history so you can check voicemail. Details are in Google’s spam-filtering guide.
Google says that using caller ID and spam protection may send call information to Google to identify businesses or determine whether calls are spam; numbers in your Contacts list are not sent. Review Google’s explanation of caller ID and spam protection if that trade-off matters to you.

Call Screen on supported Pixel phones
Google Call Screen can ask certain unknown callers who they are and why they are calling before the phone rings. Google documents automatic Call Screen in English in the United States on Pixel phones running Android 10 or later. Spam detected by Call Screen is declined without alerting you; a caller not identified as spam may ring after responding. Availability is not the same across all Android phones or regions. See Google’s Pixel Call Screen availability and instructions.

| Caller type | iPhone | Google Phone app on Android |
|---|---|---|
| Number not saved in contacts | Screen the call, silence it to voicemail, or use the Unknown Callers filter; labels and availability depend on iOS version. | The Unknown blocked-number setting does not block it just because it is unsaved. Supported Pixel Call Screen may screen certain unknown callers. |
| Private or unidentified number | Use the available unknown-caller screening or silencing option; behavior depends on iOS version. | Turn on More > Settings > Blocked numbers > Unknown. |
| Specific identifiable repeat caller | Block the number from Phone call history. | Choose the call in history and tap Block / report spam. |
| Suspected spam | Use the Spam filter for calls the carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud. | Use Caller ID and spam settings; optionally enable Filter spam calls. |
Call screening gives a caller a chance to identify themselves; silencing routes calls away from ringing, often to voicemail; blocking a number prevents that number from reaching you through the phone service’s call handling. Spam filters rely on identification signals, so they are not equivalent to blocking every unsaved caller. Filtering may also change whether you receive missed-call or voicemail notifications.
Do Not Disturb does not block repeat callers
Do Not Disturb or a similar mode can include an Allow repeat callers exception. On supported Android settings, it may allow the same person’s second call within 15 minutes through. That feature is intended to let an urgent repeat call interrupt you; it does not block the caller. The location and wording vary by device. See Android Help on repeat callers and Do Not Disturb.
