You can build a usable Commander deck on a budget by choosing a commander and game plan you enjoy, setting a firm spending limit, and finding affordable cards that support the plan. Start with cards you already own, compare individual-card purchases with a preconstructed deck, and check legality before you play. Prices and stock change, so verify the exact card printings and listings when you are ready to buy.

Choose a commander and set your budget

Begin with a legendary creature you would enjoy playing, then decide how you want the deck to win or shape a game. Wizards of the Coast recommends choosing colors and a play style you like rather than treating Commander as a race to acquire the strongest cards. Its introduction to Commander also describes the format as social and encourages players to discuss expectations and interaction with their group.

Set a total spending ceiling before adding cards to a list. Include shipping and taxes in the amount you can actually spend. There is no universally correct budget established for Commander; your limit depends on your circumstances, local prices, and what you already own.

Turn the commander into a deck plan

Write down what the commander rewards and what a successful game looks like for your deck. Use that plan to decide whether a candidate card belongs: it should support the commander, help the deck function, or answer a problem the deck is likely to face. A popular card is not automatically a good fit, and a less expensive card that advances your plan may serve you better.

Do not build a list that only works while the commander is on the battlefield. Include cards that help the deck continue to function if the commander is unavailable. Commander is a social format, so ask your regular group about the kind of power level and interaction they expect before you settle on the final list.

Find affordable cards without losing the deck’s focus

First look through cards you already own. Then use commander-specific deckbuilding pages and price filters to find possible additions. EDHREC explains how its commander pages and filters can help surface cards by price and role, including tags such as card draw, in its EDHREC guide. A price filter narrows the search; it does not establish that a card is legal, synergistic, or still available at the displayed price.

Check each candidate before buying:

  • Color identity: Confirm that the card fits the commander’s color identity, not just its casting cost.
  • Role: Decide what the card does for your plan and whether the deck needs that effect.
  • Printing and price: Check the exact printing and current listing. Prices and stock can change.
  • Substitutes: Consider whether a less expensive card can do the job well enough for your deck.

A 2026 budget deckbuilding guide also describes price-filtered discovery and upgrading a preconstructed deck as possible approaches. Treat those as ways to find candidates, not as evidence that a particular card or product is currently the best value.

Choose between singles and a preconstructed deck

Buying singles gives you control over each card, while a preconstructed deck offers a ready-to-play starting list that you can adjust. Wizards describes Commander products as 100-card decks and notes that its Foundations Commander decks can be reconfigured with cards from your collection in its buyer’s guide.

Starting route Best fit when What to compare
Cards you own plus singles You have a chosen commander or theme and want control over the list. Current prices for the exact printings, shipping and taxes, and how many cards you already have.
Preconstructed Commander deck You want a ready-to-play list or a base you can modify. Current product contents and price, fit with your preferred colors and theme, and how much you would need to replace.

Neither route is always cheaper. Compare the current cost and contents with your collection and intended deck before deciding. A product described as ready to play can still need changes to fit your preferred strategy.

Buying random boosters is not a reliable default when you need specific cards: opening packs does not guarantee the cards your deck needs. Wizards distinguishes Commander decks from Play Boosters, which it describes as products for drafting or opening for fun, in its product guide.

Check Commander legality before playing

Commander decks have specific construction rules. The official rules and format overview explain the requirements, including the 100-card deck size and color identity.

  • Exactly 100 cards: Count the commander as part of the 100.
  • Color identity: A card’s identity includes its colors and mana symbols in its rules text. Cards in the deck cannot have colors outside the commander’s identity.
  • Singleton: Use no more than one card with a given name, except for basic lands and cards whose rules allow multiple copies.

Use the official Commander format page and its linked rules when checking edge cases. Before a game, also make sure your group is comfortable with the deck’s plan and expected level of interaction.
