Start with your phone’s built-in call controls. They can identify potential spam, screen some calls, or silence unknown numbers without adding another app. Install a third-party blocker only if those tools leave a specific gap—and after checking its privacy practices and whether it works on your device and in your region. Available documentation does not establish that third-party apps outperform built-in filters across phones.
What do “label,” “screen,” “silence,” and “block” mean?
Spam protection is not one behavior. A warning label may tell you a call looks suspicious while still allowing the phone to ring. Screening gives a caller a chance to identify themselves before you decide whether to answer. Silencing sends a call somewhere quieter, often voicemail, while blocking prevents calls from a number from reaching you. Check what a setting actually does before enabling it; the label “spam protection” alone does not tell you whether calls will ring.
What your phone may already do
iPhone
Apple documents built-in call identification and blocking controls, as well as options for handling unknown callers. Depending on the option and your iOS version, the phone can ask unknown callers for a reason for calling or silence them and send them to voicemail. If you silence unknown callers, a legitimate person who is not recognized—such as a new contact or an expected caller—may not ring through. Review Apple’s call screening and blocking guide and its unknown-caller options for the settings available on your version.
Google Phone
Google Phone can identify some callers or businesses outside your contacts and warn you about potential spam. Google says numbers from outside your contacts may be sent to Google to help identify a business or determine whether a call is spam. This is caller identification and warning; it is not by itself proof that every suspicious call will be screened or blocked. Google’s caller ID and spam protection information explains the feature.

Call Screen is a separate option on supported devices and in supported locations. Google says it can use what a caller says or its spammer database to detect spam. It also says Call Screen transcripts and recordings are stored on the phone and are not saved to the user’s Google Account or activity history. Check Google’s Call Screen privacy and availability details and your Phone app settings to see whether it is offered on your device.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung Smart Call identifies callers outside your contacts and offers spam protection. Samsung says the feature is provided by Hiya. Support can depend on the specific phone, carrier, and location, so confirm availability on your Galaxy rather than assuming every model has the same controls. See Samsung’s Smart Call page.

When is a third-party call-blocking app worth considering?
An app may be useful if your phone’s built-in controls do not offer the behavior you need—for example, if you want a particular kind of caller identification, screening, or blocking that is missing from your settings. The FTC describes call-blocking apps as filters and advises consumers to check an app’s privacy policy. That is general consumer guidance, not evidence that every app blocks calls effectively or that an app will outperform the phone’s own features. See the FTC’s advice on blocking unwanted calls.
Before installing or enabling one, check its privacy policy, recent ratings, and feature availability for your phone and location. As one example, Hiya’s App Store listing says availability can vary by region, device, operating system, carrier, and plan; that listing is not a guarantee that every feature will be available to you. Review the Hiya app listing if considering that app.

How to choose without blocking someone you need to hear from
- Decide what you want calls to do. If a warning label is enough, look for caller ID and spam warnings. If you want callers screened before you answer, check for a screening feature. If you do not want unknown callers to ring, understand where those calls go—on iPhone, the silence option sends them to voicemail.
- Check your phone’s existing settings. Use the current call controls documented for your iPhone, Google Phone device, or Samsung model. Feature names and availability differ by operating system, device, carrier, and location.
- Consider the cost of missed legitimate calls. If you regularly receive calls from unsaved numbers, a setting that silences or blocks them may also affect useful calls. Prefer a warning or screening behavior if it better fits how you handle unknown callers.
- Add an app only for a specific unmet need. Confirm that the feature works on your device and in your region, then decide whether its privacy terms are acceptable before granting access or turning it on.
Is one option more effective?
There is no established universal winner in the available documentation: it does not provide a controlled, phone-by-phone comparison of built-in filters and third-party apps or a comparable rate of spam calls blocked. Choose based on the call behavior you need, the controls supported by your device, the possibility of missing legitimate calls, and the app’s data practices—not an assumed accuracy advantage.
