Charging speed depends on your Mac model, adapter, cable, and whether the setup supports fast charging. The main day-to-day difference is that MagSafe 3 connects magnetically and has a charging-status light, while USB-C charging can use a Mac’s USB-C port or a compatible powered display.
Is MagSafe 3 faster than USB-C?
Not inherently. Apple documents fast charging with model-appropriate combinations using either a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable or a USB-C charge cable. For eligible 14-inch MacBook Pro models, Apple lists a 96W adapter with either cable; for eligible 16-inch models, it lists a 140W adapter with either cable. The connector alone does not establish how quickly a Mac will charge.
Apple says eligible MacBook Air and 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models can charge to up to 50% in around 30 minutes with an appropriate power source and cable. That is an Apple-published manufacturer benchmark, not a controlled comparison of MagSafe 3 against USB-C. Actual times vary with settings and environmental conditions. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance for the eligible combinations and test notes.
What determines charging speed?
- Mac model: Fast-charge eligibility and recommended adapter wattage vary by model.
- Adapter: For USB-C charging, Apple recommends a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD) and at least the minimum wattage recommended for that Mac.
- Cable and port: The cable must match the route you plan to use: USB-C to MagSafe 3 for the magnetic port, or a compatible USB-C charge cable for a USB-C port.
- Conditions: Battery state, settings, and environmental factors can affect charge time.
Apple’s adapter guidance explains USB-C adapter compatibility and model-specific wattage recommendations.

Which MacBooks support MagSafe 3 or USB-C charging?
Compatibility depends on the MacBook’s generation. Apple lists MagSafe 3 support for MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later and MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, with one exception: MacBook Pro (13-inch, M2, 2022) does not support MagSafe 3.
Apple lists USB-C charging for MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016 or later and MacBook Air models introduced in 2018 or later. Other generations are listed separately in Apple’s Mac laptop charging guidance. MagSafe 3 is not compatible with older MagSafe or MagSafe 2 adapters and cables.

What is the practical difference between the connectors?
MagSafe 3: magnetic release and a status light
MagSafe 3 connects magnetically, so the connector releases if it is pulled. Its light is amber while charging or when charging is on hold, and green when the Mac is fully charged. This can make the charging state easy to check without opening the battery menu.

USB-C: use a built-in port or a powered display
USB-C charging uses a compatible USB-C port already present on supported MacBooks. A compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt display can also provide power, which may let you charge and connect to a display through the same setup. The adapter or display must support USB PD and meet the Mac’s recommended wattage for the best charging experience.
Which cable and adapter should you choose?
Start with your exact MacBook model and its recommended adapter wattage, then choose the charging path that suits how you use the computer. Apple lists these adapter options for certain newer models; they are model-specific recommendations, not universal requirements for every MacBook.

- Choose a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable if you want the magnetic connection and status light.
- Choose a USB-C charge cable if you want to charge through the Mac’s USB-C port, or use a compatible USB-C power source or display.
- Before relying on fast charging, confirm that the specific Mac model, adapter wattage, and cable combination is listed as eligible by Apple.
Does connecting MagSafe 3 and USB-C at the same time charge faster?
No. Apple says: “Your Mac charges over only one port at a time, using the source that provides the most power.” Connecting both does not combine their power or increase charging speed. Apple’s explanation appears in its charging guidance.

How to compare two charging setups fairly
If you are deciding between two chargers you already own, compare the complete setups rather than the connector names. Use the same Mac model and battery state, and check:
- The adapter’s wattage and whether it supports USB PD when charging by USB-C.
- Whether the cable and Mac port are compatible with the chosen charging route.
- Whether Apple lists the combination for fast charging on that exact Mac model.
- Which practical feature matters more: MagSafe 3’s magnetic release and status light, or USB-C’s port and powered-display flexibility.
Apple’s published benchmark provides a reference for eligible combinations, but it does not show that one connector is universally faster across MacBooks.
