Text forwarding is configured separately, and contact-specific call routing has its own rules.
Choose the destination that fits how you want to answer

Voice app and web destinations are distinct from linked phone numbers. A call can ring in Voice while also being forwarded to one or more selected linked phones. Google documents a limit of six linked numbers; a number already linked to a Google Voice number cannot be linked again. Google’s setup instructions also note that linked numbers are unavailable to SIP Link users, who should check with their IT administrator.
Set which devices and linked phones receive calls
On a computer
- Open Google Voice and sign in.
- Select Settings, then open Calls.
- Under Incoming calls, use My devices to switch Voice devices on or off.
- In the same incoming-call area, use Call forwarding to switch individual linked phone numbers on or off.
These are separate controls: a Voice device can be disabled while a linked phone remains eligible for forwarded calls, or vice versa. Turning off forwarding to a linked number does not unlink it. To remove a number from the account, use the separate remove action.
In the mobile app
In the Google Voice app on Android or iOS, open Menu → Settings → Incoming calls to change which devices can receive calls. Linked-number and device controls are also available in the app; exact labels may vary by platform and app version. Google’s platform-specific instructions are available for Android and iOS.

A linked number and the phone’s device number are not necessarily the same setting. Google lets you choose the device number, no number, or a linked number under the device setting. A linked number may also be used to place calls through the mobile carrier when internet service is unavailable.
Link and verify a phone before forwarding calls to it
To make a regular phone ring, first add it to Google Voice as a linked number and complete verification. Google’s instructions describe verification by text for a mobile number or by phone call for a landline. After verification, enable that number in Call forwarding under incoming-call settings. Route particular callers to a phone or voicemail
Custom call forwarding is for cases where some contacts or groups should receive different treatment from other callers. From a computer, create a rule for the contact or group and choose a linked phone or voicemail. Depending on the rule, Google Voice also supports a custom greeting or screening certain callers. You can view rules on a mobile device, but Google says you must use a computer to create, edit, or delete them.
If more than one rule matches a contact, only the first matching rule in the list applies. Review the order when a caller is not receiving the destination you expect. See Google’s custom call-forwarding instructions.

Configure text delivery separately from call ringing
Google Voice texts are available in the Voice app and web experience. On Android, Google also documents forwarding texts to linked numbers. If forwarding to the device number causes messages to appear in both the default messaging app and Voice, uncheck that device number in the text-forwarding settings to stop the duplicate notifications. Google says Voice texts use Wi-Fi or mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable. The detailed forwarding steps are Android-specific; do not assume the same menu path applies on iOS.

Google Voice can place calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data, or use carrier-only calling, according to the calling setting selected on the device. If internet calling is unavailable, the phone may use the carrier, and carrier charges may apply. Calls started from the phone’s native Phone app may use the mobile plan; start calls in Google Voice when you intend to use its internet-calling setting. See Google’s calling options.

Know the limits of routing and quiet-hour options
- Automated phone attendants: Google says, “Forwarding calls from your Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported.” For organizational automated call handling, Google points to Google Workspace auto attendant; ask the organization’s administrator about configuration and availability.
- Quiet hours: Google says the current personal-account experience does not include the legacy ring schedule. Its legacy-transition guidance suggests using the smartphone’s Do Not Disturb feature instead.
- Availability: Supported operating systems, account eligibility, and regional availability can differ. Check Google’s current setup requirements for your account and country.
