Milwaukee batteries are platform-specific: an M12 battery fits M12 tools and chargers, and an M18 battery fits M18 tools and chargers. Within either platform, CP, XC, and HD describe pack formats, while REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT, and FORGE identify performance tiers. Choose by platform first, then balance capacity, size, workload, tier, and charger—not by a label such as “more power” alone.
Start with the platform: M12 and M18 do not cross-fit
Check the platform marking on the tool before choosing a battery. Milwaukee says M12 batteries work with M12 tools and chargers, and M18 batteries work with M18 tools and chargers. The platform families are not interchangeable: an M12 battery is not for an M18 tool, or vice versa. See Milwaukee’s M18 battery FAQ.
What CP, XC, and HD mean
These labels describe pack format and the use Milwaukee emphasizes, not the battery’s technology tier. Milwaukee’s battery selection guide frames the choices this way:

Format alone does not tell you the complete performance or runtime story. Compare the amp-hour rating, physical size and weight, intended workload, and technology tier together.

How REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT, and FORGE differ
Milwaukee identifies standard REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT, and FORGE as three M18 REDLITHIUM tiers. It positions HIGH OUTPUT above standard REDLITHIUM and FORGE as its highest tier, claiming FORGE offers its most power, fastest charging, and longest life. These are Milwaukee’s product-positioning claims, not independent comparative test results. The tier labels are separate from CP, XC, and HD: a battery can combine a tier name with a pack format, such as FORGE XC6.0 or HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0.
For M12, Milwaukee says its HIGH OUTPUT CP2.5 and XC5.0 packs retain the existing M12 CP/XC footprint while delivering 25% more power on high-demand M12 tools and 25% cooler operation through heavy applications. The current M12 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5.0 product page also claims 25% more runtime. Treat these percentages as Milwaukee’s claims; they are not independent test results.

Power and runtime are not the same thing
A higher-performance tier or a claim of more power does not automatically mean the same runtime as a higher-capacity pack. Milwaukee says its M18 FORGE XC8.0 provides HIGH OUTPUT 12.0 power in a smaller, lighter pack, while also clarifying that the XC8.0 does not provide the same runtime as the HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0. The XC8.0 is an 8 Ah pack; the HD12.0 provides 12 Ah runtime. See Milwaukee’s FORGE XC8.0 page and FORGE HD12.0 page.
Milwaukee says the FORGE HD12.0 delivers 50% more power than HIGH OUTPUT 12.0. That power comparison does not erase the difference between a compact pack and a larger-capacity pack: choose based on the work and the runtime you need, not the tier name alone.

Those comparisons are useful when weighing pack size against demanding work, but they are manufacturer descriptions rather than a common independent test across all three products.

Milwaukee’s M18 FAQ gives these charge times from testing at room temperature using the M18 Super Charger. The figures are Milwaukee’s, not independent measurements; Milwaukee says actual results may vary and charging depends on the pack, charger, and environmental conditions. Year of testing is not stated in the retrieved FAQ.

The XC6.0 product page separately quotes 15 minutes to 80% with the M18 Dual Bay Simultaneous Super Charger. Keep that charger context attached to the figure; it is not a general promise for every charger or environment. A practical way to choose a Milwaukee battery
- Match the platform. Read the tool’s M12 or M18 marking and select a battery from that same platform.
- Decide the capacity and runtime you need. Compare the Ah rating and manufacturer runtime information; do not assume a smaller, higher-tier pack lasts as long as a larger HD pack.
- Choose the format for the work. Favor CP when compactness and low weight are priorities, XC for a balance, or HD when high-demand work and longer runtime matter more.
- Compare the tier. Distinguish standard REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT, and FORGE where offered, and treat performance statements as Milwaukee claims.
- Check charging compatibility and timing. Use a charger for the same platform, and consult charge times for the exact pack and charger combination; conditions affect results.
