Start by matching the battery’s platform label to the label on your tool: M12 to M12, M18 to M18, and MX FUEL to MX FUEL. These are separate systems, not interchangeable battery sizes. Once you have the right platform, choose a pack type based on the balance of weight, handling, power, and runtime you need.

Check the tool’s platform before comparing batteries

Milwaukee’s simplest compatibility rule is to match the labels. As Mike Anderson puts it in Milwaukee’s battery selection guide, “The easiest way to know which batteries work with your tool(s) is to make sure their labels match.” Milwaukee says all M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers; that does not mean an M18 battery fits an M12 or MX FUEL tool.

Platform Voltage listed by Milwaukee Compatibility rule
M12 12 volts Use M12 batteries with M12 tools and compatible M12 chargers.
M18 18 volts Use M18 batteries with M18 tools and compatible M18 chargers.
MX FUEL 72 volts Use MX FUEL batteries with MX FUEL equipment and compatible MX FUEL chargers.

These voltage figures come from Milwaukee’s 2024 selection guide and identify the platforms; they are not a way to determine compatibility across systems. The guide also identifies M4 and M28 as outliers. If you have an older or unusual tool, check its exact model label and manual rather than assuming a current-platform pack will fit.

Choose a pack type for handling, power, and runtime

After confirming the platform, compare the pack types available for that system. Milwaukee uses CP, XC, and HD to describe different size and performance tradeoffs, not separate tool platforms.

#1 Best Overall
Milwaukee M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH Output XC 6.0Ah Battery Pack (2pk)
  • REDLINK Intelligence: provides optimized performance and overload protection using total system communication between tool, battery and charger
Pack type Milwaukee’s description When the tradeoff may suit you
CP Compact and light When a smaller, lighter battery helps with portability or handling.
XC A balance of size and weight, power, and runtime When you want a middle ground rather than prioritizing minimum weight or the most demanding work.
HD Larger, with high power and longer runtime for demanding work When the task calls for more power or longer runtime and you can accept more bulk and weight.

Availability and exact specifications vary by platform and pack model. Check the specific battery listing and tool manual before choosing a pack for an exact tool.

Understand battery tiers separately from pack types

REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT, and FORGE refer to Milwaukee battery technology tiers; CP, XC, and HD describe pack types. The terms answer different questions, so a tier name by itself does not tell you a pack’s size, capacity, or runtime.

  • Best-in-class construction: Resistant housing designed to provide increased protection against exposure to common oils, greases, and solvents
  • All-weather performance: delivers fade free power in extreme jobsite conditions
  • Fuel gauge onboard: Displays remaining runtime
  • REDLINK Intelligence: Our battery circuitry provides optimized performance and overload protection using total system communication between tool, battery, and charger
  • Versatility: Powers more than 200+ Milwaukee M18 cordless power tools
  • REDLITHIUM: Milwaukee’s battery technology branding.
  • HIGH OUTPUT: Milwaukee says these packs provide more power and operate cooler than standard REDLITHIUM packs. Its 2024 guide lists M12 HIGH OUTPUT as 25% more power and 25% cooler, and M18 HIGH OUTPUT as 50% more power and 50% cooler, each compared with standard REDLITHIUM. These are Milwaukee’s claims, not independent comparative test results.
  • FORGE: Milwaukee presents FORGE as its most advanced battery tier. That description is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent ranking.

For a more specific charging comparison, Milwaukee’s current M18 batteries and chargers FAQ reports these times using its M18 Super Charger at room temperature: M18 FORGE XC6.0, 25 minutes to charge and 15 minutes to reach 80%; M18 HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0, 60 minutes; M18 HIGH OUTPUT XC8.0, 45 minutes; and M18 XC5.0, 60 minutes. Its current MX FUEL FAQ reports 65 minutes for MX FUEL FORGE and 45 minutes for MX FUEL FORGE XC8.0 with the MX FUEL Super Charger at room temperature. Milwaukee says actual charge results may vary; times depend on the particular battery, charger, and conditions.

Use the included pack as a starting point, not a universal rule

Milwaukee says the battery included with a tool is the one its engineers determined to be optimal for that tool’s typical applications. That makes it a practical baseline. You might choose a different compatible pack if your work prioritizes lower weight, more runtime, or a different balance of power and handling. Confirm that choice against the exact tool model’s manual.

Match the charger and follow the manuals

Use a Milwaukee charger made for the battery’s platform, and follow the tool and battery manuals for safe use, storage, and warranty information. Milwaukee’s batteries and chargers guidance advises using Milwaukee chargers and avoiding third-party batteries or chargers. Check the exact model documentation if compatibility is unclear, especially for legacy or unusual tools.
