A normal-looking crease is not proof of damage, but neither a quick demonstration nor a built-in diagnostic can guarantee that a foldable has no hidden or intermittent fault.
Start with the display, without pressing or peeling anything
Inspect both screens in bright, neutral light. Open the phone and view the inner display straight on and from several angles. Look across the fold and around the edges for cracks, dark or bright spots, abnormal colored lines, uneven damage, bubbles, or film that is lifting. Then use ordinary on-screen controls to check touch response across the full inner panel.
A visible crease can be a normal feature, but that depends on the model. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold5’s unfolded-screen crease is normal; a significantly deeper or uneven crease should be referred to support (Samsung Gulf Support). Samsung also notes that fine bends and wrinkles can appear in the folding area of Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 displays (Samsung Singapore Support). Do not treat either statement as a blanket assurance about other models or every crease: look for accompanying damage or poor function.
The inner screen’s protective film is separate from the display panel. If it is bubbled, scratched, or lifting, do not peel it off during an inspection or press hard on the flexible screen. Samsung warns that arbitrary removal may damage the panel and that uncertified film can affect image quality or performance; its guidance applies to the Fold4 and Flip4, so check the exact model’s current instructions (Samsung Singapore Support). Ask whether the panel beneath damaged film has been checked and how an appropriate replacement would be handled.

Handle the inner screen gently. Google says the Pixel Fold’s flexible display is softer than a conventional phone screen and warns against crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects. It also advises ensuring fine particles are not caught at the display or hinge when closing (Google Pixel Fold safety guidance). Do not probe the screen or hinge with tools.
Check that folding and screen behavior are consistent
Open and close the phone gently through its normal range. Do not force it or repeatedly fold it to try to prove durability. If practical, check that it remains usable while open and in a normal partially folded position. Watch for the inner screen flickering, going blank, or changing unexpectedly as the hinge moves.

There is no universal hinge pass/fail standard established here for resistance, sound, angle, or fold count. Note what you observe rather than treating a particular noise or feel as proof of a fault—or proof that the hinge is healthy.
Test the functions you will rely on
Check the phone’s everyday hardware and connectivity: touch response, cameras, buttons, speaker, microphone, charging, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile or cellular network, fingerprint reader, and other sensors you expect to use. Test the outer screen as well as the inner display.

Run built-in diagnostics where available
On supported Samsung phones, Samsung Members and Device care provide interactive diagnostics. Depending on the model and software, available checks may include the touchscreen, battery status, camera, speaker, microphone, buttons, sensors, charging, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile network, and fingerprint recognition. The available tests and labels vary (Samsung device diagnostics).
Use diagnostics as a screening step, then verify important functions yourself. A passed test does not establish that an intermittent defect is absent or predict how long a component will last.

Verify the model, repair history, and support options
Ask for the exact model and its IMEI or serial number, then check warranty and service eligibility through the manufacturer’s process for your country. Ask whether the phone has been repaired, damaged, or exposed to liquid, and request proof of purchase if available. A seller’s assurance or a quick demonstration does not establish coverage.
Google’s warranty guidance says accidental, liquid, physical, cosmetic, and unauthorized-repair damage can affect coverage or repair eligibility; the outcome depends on the device-specific process (Google warranty eligibility). Samsung’s warranty and support tools also depend on model, software version, and country. Its Canadian support page was updated October 1, 2026, and should not be treated as a global compatibility list (Samsung Canada warranty and support).

If a substantial fault appears, pause the purchase and request an assessment or quote through an authorized service route before deciding. Repair cost, warranty coverage, and availability vary by model and region; a cosmetic issue and a repair-eligibility decision are not necessarily the same thing. Google lists charging, microphone, speaker, button, network, and certain display issues among matters that may be addressed subject to eligibility (Google warranty eligibility).
Do not assume a used foldable is water- or dust-safe
Protection claims are model- and condition-specific. Google says the Pixel Fold is not dust resistant and that its water resistance is not permanent; wear, repair, disassembly, or damage may reduce or eliminate it (Google Pixel Fold safety guidance). Other foldables have their own specifications and care terms. Check the exact model’s official documentation, and never immerse or wet-test a used phone to see whether its seals still work.
Compare two candidates on evidence, not appearance alone
When choosing between used foldables, compare the inner display’s condition and touch response, hinge and screen behavior while moving, diagnostic results, verified model and repair history, support eligibility, and authorized repair availability. Compare like with like: protection and warranty claims depend on the model, country, condition, and repair history. Do not infer remaining life from a fold count or a brief seller demonstration.
