If Modeler for Houdini is missing or failing, first check whether Houdini itself starts. If it does not, troubleshoot Houdini’s installation, licensing, and release-specific system requirements before investigating Modeler. If Houdini starts but Modeler does not appear or work, confirm the Modeler installation method and compatible Houdini build with its developer: the available historical announcement does not establish current compatibility or installation instructions.
First determine whether Houdini or Modeler is failing
Separate a host-application problem from a Modeler problem before reinstalling anything. Houdini must launch reliably before you can tell whether Modeler is the cause.
- Houdini will not launch: Start with SideFX’s installation and troubleshooting FAQ, and check the system requirements for your exact Houdini release. SideFX treats installing the Houdini software and installing licenses as separate concerns.
- Houdini launches, but Modeler is missing or fails when used: Treat this as a Modeler installation or compatibility issue. Verify the installation route and supported host build with the Modeler developer rather than assuming Houdini needs to be reinstalled.
Modeler 1.0 was announced in a SideFX forum post on January 13, 2020: the Modeler release announcement. It is historical information, not a current installation guide, compatibility matrix, or confirmation of present availability.
Record the versions and setup before troubleshooting
Capture these details before changing files or settings. Exact versions matter because Houdini requirements are release-specific, and no current Modeler compatibility matrix is established here.

- Full Houdini version and build, as shown in the application or installer
- Modeler version, if shown in its files or interface
- Operating system version and system architecture
- How Modeler was installed and its installation location
- The exact error text, if any
- Whether Houdini starts and whether other tools load
- Relevant Houdini log or startup output
Check requirements for your exact Houdini release
Use the official SideFX requirements page matching the Houdini version you have installed. Do not assume requirements for one release apply to another, and do not treat Houdini’s supported operating systems as proof that Modeler supports them.
- Houdini 20.5 system requirements lists requirements for that release, including operating systems, hardware, graphics, and Linux build options. It specifies that CentOS 7/RHEL 7 users need the gcc9 build rather than the default gcc11 build.
- Houdini 20.0 system requirements has separate requirements and Linux package notes for that release, including a gcc9 build caveat for older distributions.
These examples describe Houdini host requirements only; they do not establish Modeler compatibility with Houdini 20.0, 20.5, or any particular operating system.

Understand SideFX support policy without treating it as Modeler compatibility
SideFX’s troubleshooting FAQ says, “We officially provide support for the latest version of Houdini and the two versions preceding it.” This is SideFX’s official support policy for Houdini. It is not a promise that Modeler supports those same releases. The latest Houdini release changes over time, so check SideFX’s current FAQ when assessing host support.
Try a reversible Houdini preferences check
If Houdini starts but environment-related behavior seems suspect, SideFX’s FAQ suggests renaming the version-specific Houdini preferences folder so Houdini can generate fresh defaults. This is a general Houdini troubleshooting check, not a confirmed Modeler repair.

- Close Houdini.
- Locate the preferences folder for the Houdini version you are troubleshooting.
- Back up the folder, then rename it rather than deleting it.
- Start Houdini and check whether the environment issue changes.
Fresh preferences reset settings to defaults. If the issue is unchanged, you can close Houdini and restore the original folder. Do not interpret a changed result as proof that Modeler itself was incompatible; the check only indicates that host preferences may be involved.
When Modeler still does not appear or work
If Houdini launches normally but Modeler remains missing or fails, the decisive details are the Modeler installation route and whether its developer supports your exact Houdini build. The available 2020 announcement does not provide current installation instructions or a current compatibility table. Confirm both with an authoritative, current Modeler developer source before changing versions or following an installation recipe.

“Modeler for Houdini not showing up,” “Modeler not working after updating Houdini,” and “Which Houdini version is compatible with Modeler?” are useful ways to describe these issues when seeking help; they are reader-oriented phrasings, not measured search-query data.
